Google’s Project Fi is pretty awesome.
Unlimited calls and texts are $20/month and data is $10/GB with a max charge of $60 of data. If you use 0.5GB you’ll pay $5 for data that month. Additional users with unlimited calls and texts are just $15/month.
Today you can pickup a Motorola G6 for just $99 for an X4 for just $149! Other LG and Pixel phones are on sale as well.
Many people use it domestically, though I’m on a shared Verizon plan with unlimited everything for $30/month, so it’s not compelling for me to use in the USA.
However I use Project Fi extensively when traveling abroad. 4G LTE data is the same $10 per GB everywhere in over 135 countries. That’s a bargain for true high-speed data. Plus you only pay for what you use, so if you use 1.1GB you’ll pay $11, not $20. You can make phone calls for 20 cents/minute or you can make phone calls over the data network with Google Voice. The line itself costs just 67 cents per day and you can place your plan and number on hold as needed. I’ve used it in places from Israel to Svalbard to the UAE. You can view supported countries here.
When I’m not traveling I just pause my service and don’t pay a thing.
You can use your Project Fi phone as a hotspot and you can even get a free data only SIM for other devices to use at the same low rate per GB anywhere in the world.
If you signup with this referral link we’ll each get a $20 statement credit.

do these phones only work on Fi? can they be unlocked?
from their FAQ
If I buy a new device from Project Fi, will it work with other wireless providers?
Yes. Any device you get from Project Fi comes unlocked and can be used with other wireless providers if you choose to leave our service.
Would I be able to keep my phone number if I switch from my current carrier?
sure
just got us both 20 bux!
Can this be used to replace an existing phone on Fi, or only for a new account / user? (wife cracked her Pixel, this might be a good replacement for about the same or less than the repair).
And would I be able to use this with an obi for a landline? Is that worthwhile?
As per the t&c the device must be activated on a talk and text plan?
The discounted price will automatically apply during checkout, but if Fi is not activated within 30 days of device shipment, the discounted amount will be charged to your Google Payments account to match the full price of the device. Device must be activated within the same group plan that was used to purchase the device. There is no minimum activation time needed to be eligible for the discount. Activation must be for full service (e.g., activation does not apply to a data-only SIM).
Can I use the google fi SIM card with my unlocked iPhone after activation?
How do you get Verizon for $30 month unlimited everything?
Ditto
He’s probably grandfathered in.
If you order an additional data sim, can you pause the main sim so you wont pay the $20 calls & text fee, and pay only for data consumed with the data sim?
