is there a square trade in option i can buy?

These were the original “Birds”
Excellent scooter. If you’re on the heavier side, these tires will need replacing as the inner tubes aren’t the best. The bike shop can do it but the labor is approx $70-120 (tube costs $6?)
The design of the back wheel is especially not tire change friendly.

Anyone have any experience with this scooter? I want to buy one but there’s so many options and not sure if this one is the best one for the price

Platzker

For the price … yes this one is great, and it is a real brand. It’s pretty similar to the Segway models at $500-$600

A few things to note, it has air filled tires which can get flats … other scooters do not have air filled tires.

Also the suspension is ok on bumps.

BL

Curious… is it better or worse (or neutral) to have air-filled tires on a scooter? I could imagine air-filled tires being a benefit on some modes of transportation, though not necessarily all. Cheers!

Anyone have any experience bringing to Israel in luggage? Is battery size an issue?

Barry

The battery isn’t easily removable. It of course can be removed, but probably voids the warranty and requires removing a lot of screws. I thought about getting one and bringing it back to Israel too, but since you can’t check it with the battery included, I decided better to just buy it there at a higher price.

Much of Israel has steep inclines-hills. All of the lower watt scooters (< 600 watts) like this one do not handle well on them. For hills you need the high watt scooters. (I have owned many brands of scooters over many years and use them as my primary transportation.)

Hi Dan,

Are you able to put an informative post about these scooters. It’s fine if you post them, but people look at them and think they are safe.

Electric scooters can be extremely dangerous, especially for teenagers (and adults) driving in the busy cities, such as the streets of New York City. Parents buy them for their kids not understanding the risks involved. Examples include: Studies have shown them far more dangerous than bikes. If someone gets into a crash they will fly right off with absolutely no protection or no way to try to gain their balance. Auto drivers on the road may not necessarily realize that someone is on a scooter, believing that the scooter rider is on foot and walking much slower and can crash into the scooter while making a turn. Anyone riding a scooter should be wearing full body protective gear.

It’s true that e-scooters can be dangerous, sometimes deadly. But large scale studies are not very robust at this time.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccarthy/2019/02/04/how-dangerous-are-electric-scooters-infographic/#550fab4f469c

In short:

UCLA did a study where they took data from “two emergency departments from Sept. 1, 2017 to Aug. 31, 2018, finding that 249 people involved in e-scooter accidents required medical care with a third of them transported to hospital by ambulance. The most common accidents noted were falls, collisions with objects and riders getting struck by a moving vehicle or object. 40% of the resulting injuries were bone fractures, with head trauma also noted in 31.7% of cases. 27.7% involved cuts, sprains and bruises.”

But in my opinion, this is the most important finding:

“Perhaps most notably, the study found that only 4.4% of riders were wearing a helmet when their accident occurred.”

So while it’s true that e-scooters can be dangerous, as you mention, simply wearing a helmet can help avoid life-threatening issues.

Additionally, as can be seen in the info-graph attached to this article, most injuries occur due to falling and collisions with inanimate objects, with only 8.8% due to actually being hit by a vehicle.

I think there is good reason to be concerned, and one must understand the inherent risk of e-scooters when buying one, but I also think they are a wonderful form of transportation in cities. Hopefully as they become more common, the city will create a safer road sharing system.
