I love Chiang Mai! It’s a second home to me as I lived there for 8 months and have tons of friends there.

Don’t miss the Night Bazaar, Maesa Elephant Camp, and I suggest dining on top of the Pornping Tower at the Blue Bat Barbeque (if you can get kosher food there, if not, go up there just for the view; it’s open-air dining on top of one of the tallest buildings in Chiang Mai; GORGEOUS at night! I’m sure if you paid them a bit, you could bring your own food; it’s usually not all that busy and their prices are fairly low, so if you pay them 50% of menu prices–or more or less as you feel led–I’m sure they’d be find with you eating there anyway. Stay away from the khao pot moo–pork fried rice.). Don’t miss Wat Phra Singh and actually just enjoy wandering around inside the moat/wall to various Wats (temples). It can be very interesting to be at Wat Phra Singh fairly early in the morning when the monks go out to get offerings and then after that when there is a huge assemblage of young (boy) monks standing in orderly rows for some sort of service.

Renting motorbikes for $3-5/day is one of the cheapest, easiest ways to get around, if you know your way around or are handy with a map (it’s hard to give my perspective on how easy it would be for a beginner since I know Chiang Mai so well). Otherwise, you can get songthaews (song means two, thaew means bench; it’s the pickup trucks with covered beds). The yellow songthaews tend to run a set route with a set price of 5 baht or 10 baht (I forget which, it’s been too long). The red songthaews are more (you need to barter with them) but they serve as taxis–maybe shared, maybe by yourself (depends if they pick someone else up that’s going in roughly the same direction). Regular western-style taxis are much more expensive.

You should probably swing by Central Airport Plaza, a huge shopping mile near the airport at the intersection of one of the ring roads (1141) and the 108/Hang Dong Rd. If you’ve been to some of the malls in the UAE, it doesn’t compare to that, but it blows any US malls I’ve been to totally out of the water.

Dan, if it makes our dear friend tunabaigel feel better, feel free to remove my link. It saddens me that someone would not like what they see when they see our site. I would leap to conclusions that I hope are wrong and think that tunabaigel is an atheist or Jew who is unhappy that we are Christians catering to missionary travelers. If so, it would seem to fall within the modern American definition of intolerance.

I would suggest you also consider this column and the thoughts contained therein by an Atheist who has observed a lifetime (he grew up in Africa) of Christian missionary work in Africa, and even though he strongly disagrees with the religion, he realizes that it’s good people helping people and that Africa (for example) would be much worse off without our ilk.

And if you’re a Jew, that seems a special shame seeing as how we’re both doing our best to serve the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

By the way, we also cater to non-religious humanitarian and Jewish non-profit organizations, as well as international adoptions.

But regardless of the above, I love to travel and many folks on this site love to travel, and I don’t let differences of religious beliefs get in my way of being friendly and learning from each other.
