It doesn’t have E911, meaning you can’t call 911 with it. but you can get E911 for $2/month through aveno.
I’m flying overseas and not gonna have easy call to US while abroad (no smartphone, just local service). How complicated is it to bring this device and a small phone and plugin to router in apt. there? Any reason it shouldn’t work? I know it’s old fashioned, but some of us choose this way 🙂
That will work.
Can i plug it in to a internet jack or only to the router?
Can you explain how I would be able to use my current land line phone number? I didn’t understand from your post, how one needs to first port it to a prepaid cell service and then port it to google.
You Will need your account number from your landline you can call your phone company in case you don’t have it with you
You can call any cell phone provider that you want to bring in your number for instance page plus you can buy the $12 plan ask to bring in your number once your number is on the cell phone you can bring it into google voice
I have a OBI100 do I have to upgrade ?
stingy: i am still using the OBI100.
they do not provide any kind of costumer service, but as if now it still works, although i did need to install a few update files
abe1:
as explained, open a new cell phone account (at the time i did it a few years ago, the cheapest option was att go phone, i paid $7 for the phone and $10 for the line.
when you open the cell-line, tell them you want to port an old number, and give them your Landline number,
your landline will then inactive, and anyone who dials your landline, will then ring your cell phone. (you may or may not need to formally close the account with your landline phone company, so double check)
then you open an account with google voice, and ask to port in your cell-phone (old landline) number – as others have stated, there is a $20 charge.
your cellphone (old landline) number now becomes your google voice number.
you then connect the OBI to that google voice account and now your old landline number now becomes your obi number, into which you can plug in any regular land line telephone (cordless or corded)
so for a total of $77 dollars ($40 for the OBI and $37 for the whole porting process) you once again have a regular telephone, ringing on your regular number, for which you never pay a penny again.
as others mentioned it is prudent to hook up E911 service (especially if you have children in the house) so that 911 works and calls your regular emergency services companies like aveno provide this service
deal not working
Thanks @Dan! Got it!
I can’t find the seller listed for the discount!

I can’t either find the seller.
I just ordered it and the discount applied
What’s not mentioned here is that Obihai will start charging you $10 every year after 1 year, in order to update the firmware. Your Obihai device will not work without the updated firmware.
Bought my OBi200 2 years ago. No such issues or charge.
I’m just quoting some angry people writing reviews on Amazon. I thought it’s important for people to know. But if you never got a charge, then lucky you! Apparently, some people got a charge after a few years, others after only 1 year. What people were mostly upset about, was the supposed deception that was going on with Obihai. The fact that they didn’t let them know earlier that there would be a charge. But even $10 a year is a great deal compared to some of today’s landline rates.
Got it set up today. How do I setup the caller ID?
