@dan
Do you need to get a plan on it in order to get the prime
@Me:
No.
You can use it as an MP3 player/WiFi web browser with no service if you want and still get the Prime year.
@Dan, is the year extension from the day of purchase or day of expiration?
One word of caution….
My father bought this two weeks ago when it was $130, and they activated the free year – and removed him from being “grandfathered” in with 4 other people on the accounts. They claim that any change removes your previous privileges. After a week of calls, no one would restore it. So if you have a shared account, do not buy this unless you are prepared to kick at least 3 of those 4 off, and share credit cards and music/books etc with one of them.
@DD:
Day of expiration.
@Yosef:
So he was a secondary member and then he entered the code to become a primary member?
I guess there’s no way to remain a secondary member if you become primary, but it should warn you of that.
Try emailing jeff@amazon.com for a resolution if you’ve hit a brick wall. Probably will need to downgrade back to secondary even if he can get it resolved.
As long as the primary members uses a code it shouldn’t affect the grandfathered secondary members.
Thanks
Dan – He was the primary. Four kids were the secondary… He activated the prime, (I am assuming – expecting it to just extend his existing account as in the past), and they replaced his existing two years of prime with the new one, and refunded him the two years he already had in there.
Can I buy multiples? As in paying 250 and getting 2 years prime and 2 phones?
@Yosef:
Send an email to jeff@amazon.com and keep us posted.
@David:
Yes.
how does the prime get extended?
if i just buy the phone without activating it (just use it as a mini tablet via wifi) will i get the free prime for a year?
@chani:
There’s a code.
@michael friedman:
Yes.
trying to find a use for this item
I already have galaxy s5 phone, 3 tablets in the house, and 2 old phones that can be used as wifi devices
have ATT service, can I remove simm from my galaxy s5 ATT locked phone, install in the fire, and no need to call ATT for setup?
Is amazon fire phones – Android?
@ihave:
Yes.
@Mendy:
Yes.
keep in mind secondary prime members only get shipping benefits
if you want to get the prime movies and tv shows you will need to log in as the prime member
same with photo storage this is important if you want to use with phone
same with amazon music
and books
if you want to get the most from the phone you need to be main prime member or share everything with this person and log in as them
@Mendy:
It’s a special version of Android that Amazon made. Some people like it, some don’t. One potential downside is that it doesn’t integrate as well with Google services as more “standard” Android phones do.
I bought one on “Black Friday in July” and got upset as I saw the price dropping. Just got off a chat with Amazon Customer Service, and while they initially refused, they eventually made the exception and refunded me the price difference and tax.
Thanks for the postings about Prime above. My daughter all of the sudden lost her prime, I reactivated it for her using the new prime, not realizing what happened. Since it’s my daughter, it’s not a big issue, but I am upset that they make these changes without letting one know, just becuase I got the Fire phone.
About the phone and its OS. Actually gave it to someone, helped him install Google Play store so he can get access to apps that aren’t on Amazon store. Lack of Back button is annoying, but I guess sooner or later one can get used to the gestures. Screen sharpness is amazing (we turned off 3d as it is reported to waste battery life), and this phone is really fast and snappy!!!
@Yosef @Dan : can u just add the code for free prime after your prime expires or is that not possible? Also r the additional members grandfathered even after prime auto renews?
@yosef @dan how about entering the prime code only after the prime expires? Also does grandfathered members auto renew when it prime renews?
Can I buy the phone, take the year of Prime for myself, and then sell the phone on eBay?
Reporting back… I talked to my father last night and he said in his week of hitting the Amazon wall, it involved the contact Dan mentioned above, and he could not help. It appears that any change – even a renewing by adding a new code – to existing prime accounts, will remove the grandfathered rules and bring you into the new prime. No matter how many people he spoke to, no one could revert him back. Not only that, one of the two codes he had added to his prime was a free year from signing up for an American express card. So since he did not pay for it, there was no money to refund. They just canceled it with no reimbursement when he added the new code that came with the fire phone.
