Both AMEX and Chase have great offers to save now at Amazon.
Amazon Prime renews each year, but Amazon Prime Gift Subscriptions will allow you to lock in future years with the current savings from AMEX and Chase
You can have Prime Gifts emailed to you now and you can file them away in a folder in your email. They will always be good for a full year of Prime and they will never expire.
When you send yourself a gift year of Prime you will get an email with a special link that instantly gives a year of Prime to whatever account opens the special link. The gift of Amazon Prime isn’t auto-renewing like regular Amazon Prime is.
Just set your Prime not to auto-renew.
To do that:
Step 1: Set your membership to not auto-renew. To do so click on this link and select “End Membership.”
Step 2: You will then see the following screen. Choose to end your membership later.
If neither option is clickable then your account has already been set not to auto-renew.
After that you can buy as many gifts of Prime as you want. After your current subscription ends you can click on the special link from the email and activate another year of Prime.
You can use it for yourself or give it as a gift in the future to anyone else.
What happens if you click on the special link when you still have an active Prime subscription? It will ask you if you want to convert the Prime subscription into a $99 gift card.
If you paid tax for the Prime Gift then you will also get the tax back as a gift card.
If you have gift card funds locked in one Amazon account and you want to transfer the funds to someone else you can buy Prime gift subscriptions with your gift cards and send them to another Prime account. That other account can then turn them back into gift cards in their account.
Note that if you are grandfathered into the old Prime sharing system you can’t use this workaround as it requires letting your old Prime expire before enrolling again. Under new Prime sharing rules you can only share Prime with 1 other person and payment details are shared as well between those accounts. Though under the new system Prime benefits like Amazon Mom and Prime Video are useable by both accounts.
Amazon offers free shipping with $35+ orders or get free next-day shipping on all orders with a free trial of Amazon Prime. Prime members can share benefits with a Household member here, allowing them to double up on Amazon Prime promos! A 6 month trial and discounted Prime membership is available with Amazon Student. EBT/Medicaid Cardholders can save on Prime Membership here.

Is there any advantage to buying Prime gift memberships, as opposed to simply buying Amazon GC’s (which can be used for anything on Amazon, including Prime membership)? Thanks.
I just received a $500 Amazon GC that I want to sell in $100 lots, so this is perfect for me.
Is this a reduced price Amazon Prime gift or does it just lock in the current $99 price.
Why rush there may be amex amazon prime for free and you can always purchase prime with gift cards
Dan,
My prime expires in a few days so this is perfect, just not sure what you mean about the tax… My total is $99 + $8.79.
What do you mean by “you will also get the tax back as a gift card.”
Changed my billing address to a no-tax state and the Prime is a flat $99!
What’s the story if you have Amazon student?
@Dan “If you paid tax for the Prime Gift then you will also get the tax back as a gift card.” TYVM for confirming this! I’ve been wondering this in terms of transferring gc balance.
@Anonymous Thanks for the billing address no tax trick! What states don’t charge tax?
I’m so confused why this is a good deal. You still have to pay $99 right?
@jess: the cost of Prime may go up over time. Recently it went from $79 to $99. You could buy a few years in advance now and avoid future potential price increases
@josh: it means you could either use it for a year of Prime or get a gift card for the amount you spent on it ($107.79)
“What happens if you click on the special link when you still have an active Prime subscription? It will ask you if you want to convert the Prime subscription into a $99 gift card.”
Note: this is NOT quite true. If you have Prime by virtue or being an adult in another’s Prime Household (i.e., not primary in a Household), this will actually add another (individual) Prime to your account and you will lose the $100 (i.e., cannot cancel it, so far customer service has been unsupportive). Apparently there is an option further down in the email to apply the gift card directly, but I did not try this as I ran into this problem, and am now still trying to get $100 back from customer service. Very frustrating.
@007: Ok, after 4 hours on phone with Amazon able to get $100 credited back.
For future reference, IF YOU ARE TRYING TO USE A PRIME GIFT MEMBERSHIP TO LOAD A BALANCE TO YOUR AMAZON ACCOUNT, ONLY CLICK ON THE FOLLOWING TEXT IN YOUR EMAIL:
“Already a Prime member?
If you are already an Amazon Prime, Amazon Student, or Prime Fresh member or do not want to activate the Prime membership, you’ll be able to exchange your Prime gift for an Amazon.com Gift Card. Click here.”
Do NOT click on “Start enjoying Prime.” Otherwise, you may end up with your existing Prime getting “overridden” and losing the balance unless you want to spend 4 hours on the phone with customer service.
Does the person your sending this to need Amazon Prime? It sounds like from 007’s post –

That anyone can redeem fir the gift card balance?
