Step 1: Set your membership to not auto-renew.Ā To do so click on this link and select “End Membership.”
Step 2: Ā You will then see the following screen. Choose to end your membership later.
Step 2: Buy a Prime Gift Subscription via this link.
For now it’s still $79. Choose to have it delivered to yourself the day after your current Amazon Prime subscription expires.
Best of all: While you can’t pay for auto-renewing Prime with a gift card you can pay for the Prime gift subscription with your Amazon gift card balance. You can buy Amazon gift cards at any office supply store with your Chase Ink Plus, Chase Ink Bold, and the Ink Business CashĀ® Credit Card Card card
I’ve already done this myself. I ended my auto-renew and sent myself the gift of Prime for 01/06/15 for $79 via my gift card balance!

Brilliant, love you!
@too much work:
Took perhaps 60 seconds.
How much do you make an hour š
Besides, I locked in thousands of dollars of Amazon gift cards at 33.3% off last December. This way I get to use that up rather than pay cash: http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/37495
Can I do it for 2015 too?
Can you buy multiple years and apply it for 2016?
Is there any way to do this with a current student subscription?
@It’s me:
@chulent:
You can only schedule delivery up to 1 year in advance.
@sam:
I don’t think so.
Quick side question. I closed a delta gold amex. The rep said I have 30 days to use my skymiles, after that I lose it. Any truth to that ?
If I want to avoid having to reinvite the other 4 people, should I set the delivery date for the day before it expires?
by me it says this years renewel will be $79. NEXT renewel in 2015 will be $99.
Also, what would happen if u gifted then applied a second one? They could either not let it apply, or maybe it would stack?
@Joe:
Lies.
@Mike B:
I guess so.
Frankly I’ve never really done much research into this option so I’m not too familiar with it.
@Dave:
What does it say your next renewal will be when you click here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/primecentral?ie=UTF8&ref=lp_mem_manage&
@Mike B:
Beats me!
How do I “Choose to have it delivered to yourself the day after your current Amazon Prime subscription expires” ???
I have other options. I can 1) continue membership 2) remind me later or 3) end now. Not sure what I should do?
@Nathan:
Look at what day your subscription ends and have it delivered a day after that.
@Brocha:
End now.
Thanks.
@Dan “On May 12, 2014, you will be charged $79 for another year of Prime. Starting May 12, 2015, you will be charged $99 per year.”
did it….Thank you….hope they don’t figure this one out
This was great! Thanks!
Sorry I should have clarified: Where do i find the option to choose when to have it delivered?
But do they charge your card now or on the renewal date?
@Dan: Should have put an image of the three choices first as the second sentence of the whole post was completely unclear as to what to do:-)
Dan, I got $86.11 with tax. Is that because it is a gift?
worked like a charm,thanks
Quick question, when ending subscription do they credit you back for the months not used.
If not you loose more than paying $99 now?
does this work on the student mempership too?
@Abe
You don’t end now, you basically tell them not to renew it.
When you click on the “end” where you have the 3 choices, another option shows up with “end now” or “end later”, where “end later” means at the end of your currently paid subscription.
@Marc
They charge you now.
Re: 23 It seems that CA residents need to pay sales tax on the membership.
Less than 60 seconds for all you lazy people out there!
Thank you Dan!
I was about to do this, then I realized that my membership is still student. My next year is still $39. Starting 2015 it’ll be $49.
Awesome.
I would still pay it at $99.
What about amazon mom ?
@Sruly:
This should work just fine to renew Amazon Mom as well.
@Dan – Well I tested out adding a membership to my account (delivery of today) that already has prime. They just converted it to a $79 giftcard, so I guess stacking isnt possible.
Anyone else have any experience with having family members sharing your prime and letting it expire, then signing up again. I want to know whether the invited people are still sharing automatically afterward. Trying to avoid having to reinvite.
@Mike B:
Thanks, affirms my having them deliver it a day after the Prime expiration.
Dan –thx for all your posts they are the best ..
Think its time to start a petition to Amazon to have Prime Shipping with out the movies for a better rate ..
Its looks better as well (that there is 2 options ..) ..
You will save tons of money for a lot of ppl
Thx Again ..
P.S. You have what it takes to do it…
@Dan: Thanks done
Dan, my renewal date is July 28, 2014, so I set it to July 29, 2014 and I can actually purchase another one for July 2015; should I set it for July 30, 2015?
Nice! And I second Saul’s suggestion…
Can also click on “Manage Prime Membership” to see end date. And for those who recently -last 3 months – got an AMEX blue cash preferred, AMEX will refund the 79.00.
@Dan, my renewal date is July 28th, 2014 so I set the subscription for July 29th, 2014. I can also lock in an additional year (2015) – should I set that for July 30, 2015?
Gevaldik!! yasher koach.
Thanks Dan!! Appreciate the heads up on this savings.
I did step one, ending my subscription later (which is September 14, 2014 for me then followed the link to buy a gift Prime Subscription to my cart. I was given two choices “1 item to buy now” or “save for later. How do I purchase the gift subscription and indicate that I want it to start September 15, 2014?
Way to go, Dan!
Thanks Dan. 2 minutes = $20 Saving!
For those who asked about taxes….. I looked at my last renewal receipt and I paid taxes last year as well (in New Jersey).
Thanks!
It just says that the new membership is saved in my cart for later. How do Ifind out the date of renewal and how do I request delivery date?
@josh:
how does that work ?
why will amex blu cash credit u the $79
I don’t get it. My membership is set to renew automatically in 2 weeks for $79 anyway. What do I gain by doing this?
“On March 28, 2014, you will be charged $79 for another year of Prime. Starting March 28, 2015, you will be charged $99 per year.”
@Dan My renewal is on May 24th 2014. Amazon notified me this morning that I will be charged 79 on that date and will only be charged 99 as of may 24th 2015. This trick will not work for me as the end later link would end the subscription in 2014.
Anyone else with a similar outcome?
Hi, dan, this is what it says by me:
On March 30, 2014, you will be charged $79 for another year of Prime. Starting March 30, 2015, you will be charged $99 per year.
should i leave it ?
Thanks.
I just did it, but my membership will now end 4/17/15. Seems like it *might* be worth ordering a gift subscription on 3/19 (last day to purchase at the old rate) for 3/19/15…my subscription would overlap by a month next year, so I’d be overpaying $6.58, but I’d be saving another $20 for a net savings of $13.41. Maybe it’s not worth having to remember to cancel my renewal for that little, but I can’t help but think that there’s got to be some way I can make it work, since my expiration date is so close…
Bingo! It worked and we used points to buy it. Thank you so much!
For what it’s worth: Amazon accused of inflating prices charged to Prime members to cover shipping.
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/amazon-customers-accuse-commerce-giant-cheating-prime-members/story?id=22882043
amex platinum is supposed to give one year free amazon prime – will they still pay when it jumps to 99?
it was so easy but they charged tax so we only saved 14 dollars.
When listing products on amazon it gives you the option to match your price to the current lowest price on Amazon inclusive of shipping.
I have not come across a single product that shows different prices depending of its a Prime account or not.
How many readers have it? How many do not? please say “I”.
What makes your membership worth $79 a year?
I order $35+ to avoid delivery fee, and dont need any videos. anything else I am missing?
Thanks Dan! I received the notice that it was going up about 2 minutes before your text.
Walter
I didn’t see an answer to Anonymous’ question about what to do with Amazon Mom/student accounts. Anything?
thanks Dan!
please explain what this offer is about?
what is this amazon prime? and am i getting the $79 back?
please explain
many thanks
” Amazon accused of cheating customers through shipping costs. ” I’d join that lawsuit.
Wow – just followed your directions – got my next year all paid for – your the best dan!
@leiby: Mazel tov on your birth.
Or just go online, register at a local community college (which is always free), and in a matter of two minutes you will have a .edu email address from that school. Once you have this, you can use this email address to get Amazon Student Prime, which gives you the first 6 months of Prime free, after that $39 for first year, and then $49/year up until 4 years. Not bad huh?
As an addendum to what I just said, even if you already purchased a regular prime membership it’s not too late to change to Amazon student, they just refund you the money. I did this and when I called Amazon to see what’s going to be happen with my original prime (which I just paid for last December), they said it was being refunded. Don’t get no better ‘dan dat!
@Dan:
It looks like they are charging me tax. Was this the case when buying prime not as a “gift”?
@Dan: i also got an email saying that this years renewal will be $79 and on my account it says it will be $99. i called amazon to complain and i managed to get a confirmation email that they will lock me in with the current rate for the 2014 renewal.
What if you have a gift card balance on your amazon account?
@Rich C:
Indeed!
Would you add to the extension by cancelling current subsciption, resigning up same day, then gifting yourself for day from today…like this you’ll have 2 full years. The 1st part can even be done for Amazon Student!?
As always, Dan’s the man!
thanks dan! i love amazon & didn’t want it to end but 99 was too much. thanks! i send myself the gift
Few ppl have asked for guidance if their prime is renewing this year at $79. If they can get the gift subscription or anything?. I didn’t see any suggestions. Nu?
It seems like they send you a code good for Amazon Prime.
I’d assume you can even order it for delivery now and then apply it in 2015 when your subscription expires.
Heck, I want to see the person who orders 10 of these things and then applies it to his account for the next 10 years š
@Dan. Thanks. I’m gonna try for 1 year. (10 years, ur funny) if it doesn’t work they give gift cert for $79. so can’t lose. just break even.
I donĆ¢ā¬ā¢t get it. My membership is set to renew automatically on March 28 for $79 anyway. What do I gain by doing this?
Ć¢ā¬ÅOn March 28, 2014, you will be charged $79 for another year of Prime. Starting March 28, 2015, you will be charged $99 per year.
@Almost Up:
You can buy a $79 gift membership now and apply it to your account on 03/28/15.
On October 09, 2014, you will be charged $79 for another year of Prime. Starting October 09, 2015, you will be charged $99 per year.
they don’t allow me to gift myself for october 2015, this should answer your 10 year gift question.
only question is, if you add the gift to go in to your account today, will it extend you for a year?
@yaakov:
From my understanding this is a code you apply to your account.
Even if you send it to yourself for today I’d guess that the code will still work next year or in 5 years from now whenever you don’t have Prime active on your account.
Anyone who ordered one of these for immediate delivery want to chime in with any details?
30% off your first order at amazon subscibe and save coupon code SNSPRIME
@Dan: From the website:
“Amazon will send your gift recipient an email on the day you choose, along with redemption instructions. The gift recipient can start their Prime membership right away. If the recipient is already a Prime member, the gift can be exchanged for an Amazon.com Gift Card. The one-year gift membership does not automatically renew.”
@Anonymous:
Not sure what you’re trying to say.
My assumption is that you can order 10 of these things and just redeem each one on the day your Prime has expired for the next 10 years.
@Dan:
It’s unclear, but the language can be read to mean that you need to apply it right away and if you cannot that you get a gift certificate. It does say “CAN be exchanged” implying it does not need to be and can perhaps be applied at a (much) later date.
@Anonymous:
The only implication I read is that it’s a code that can be applied at any time to your account.
If you happen to apply it while Prime is active it will ask if you want to convert it to a $79 gift card.
very creative!
don’t forget though that you are paying 79 dollars NOW rather than paying 99 dollars in 9.5 months. You are losing whatever return you would have made on that 79 dollars over the course of 9.5 months. The net effect of the gain is not 20 dollars, rather it is 20 dollars minus the loss of return on the 79 dollars. Good to keep this in mind before making any decision.
@mike:
If you can make my $79 earn 25% interest this year I’m all ears!!!
Besides, this method also allows you to use gift cards which you can get at a discount versus auto-renewal which can’t be done with gift cards.
What if I have student prime and it says I will be charged $49 on 6/10/14
Good stuff, D-dog. Question: Am I going to lose all my orders history when my membership expires and I start my new one? š
@Rafi:
This doesn’t work for Student.
@TanteT:
Nope, everything about your account history will stay the same.
@Dan:
Look in the mirror š
@Mike B:
Interesting, this might be a good trick to transfer gift card balances. You can’t use a gift card balance to buy a gift card, but you can send it to someone with prime as a “new prime membership”
done
I’m so glad I decided to do this! I didn’t realize my membership was due to auto renew on 3/27. I would’ve hated to miss saving $20 by a week!
As far as I can tell it doesn’t let you buy more than one at a time. No biggie, extra 5 minutes. Every time I try adding a 2nd it reduces the quantity to 1. I’m going for 5 how many is everyone else buying?
I was able to lock in the extra year of prime member benefits for for the current rate – on top of that i applied any points i had earned recently and was able to get for $51.00!!
I was going to hold off because I thought my membership would automatically renew at $79 this time. Turned out it didn’t, so I did go through with the deal. My membership expired on 12/22/14, and I received this from Amazon:
On December 22, 2014, you will be charged $99 for another year of Prime.
So they weren’t going to give me the renewal, even though it was still in 2014, for the old price.
So I’m a happy camper! š
Thanks a lot,
–Michael
Dan – it says on the leave a reply section that you can put in your website, and that it will be published. I did put it in, but I don’t see it published. Am I misunderstanding something or did I do something wrong?
Thanks again – Love your site!
Best,
–Michael
@Michael I know you asked the question about your website not being published a few months ago, but if you click on your name on previous post, it links to your website.
My new year of Prime for $79 just kicked in this am! Thanks!
Amazon is raising their Prime membership by 20%… YIKES!!!
