“The world’s most popular record book is back with thousands of new categories and newly broken records, covering everything from outer space to sporting greats via Instagram, fidget spinners and all manner of human marvels. Inside you’ll find hundreds of never-before-seen photographs and countless facts, figures, stats and trivia waiting for you on every action-packed page. Guinness World Records 2019 is the ultimate snapshot of our world today.
Plus, this year we celebrate the incredible “Maker” movement with a special feature devoted to the inventors, dreamers, crafters and creators who devote their lives to amazing record-breaking projects such as the largest water pistol, a jet-powered go-kart and an elephant-sized hamburger (think you could eat a whole one!?). We take a sneak peek into their workshops to explore these epically big builds, and ask them what inspires them to go really, really large!
And if you like creating, and you like LEGO®, then you’ll love our “Making History” pages that use the world’s most famous interlocking plastic bricks to illustrate and explain an important record-breaking object – such as the Statue of Liberty or the Apollo mission’s Saturn V rocket. We examine their designs, structure and technical specifications in fully illustrated and colorful, poster-style pages.
Finally, you can jump into both the making and record-breaking action with a “Do Try This At Home” section. Challenge yourself and your family with five fun record-breaking maker-inspired records you can attempt involving origami, balloon sculptures, ring pulls and rubber bands. Who knows, your creation might just make it into the record books!”

Any insight into how ‘kosher’ the book is? How much editing does it need before my children would be able to read it?
Yitz,
A LOT of editing will be necessary. I picked one up last time and my 10 year old son brought it to me and said, “Ta, you don’t want me reading this!” It went straight to the garbage. Editing would not do it.
Buyer be very wary.
Thanks! The last one I read was the 1990 edition (black-and-white, looked somewhat like a dictionary), and I recall even that one had to be edited somewhat. Glad I held off on this deal. While I love interesting records, my kids would likely get their hands on it, and my convictions are worth more than the price drop…
What’s the problem? Is there a page with a 7 year old girl breaking a record? I wouldn’t recommend most Jewish newspapers and websites, as there will be photos of women, rebbetzins, and boys and girls shown
I’ll ignore the snide tone of this comment for the benefit of the rest of the readers who don’t have an axe to grind.
The issue is not photos of women.
It’s more like photos of women and men in various states of undress, as well as a heavy emphasis on social media, pop culture, and a host of other things that many frum Jews with average sensibilities are uncomfortable exposing their children to.
+1
With all respect, what are you expecting with this record book? The fastest person to consume gefilte fish? The quickest shmoneh esrei? The largest mezuzah on Earth? This book has been known for years to establish records of the non-Jewish world, involving accomplishments in the non-Jewish world of art, literature, business, music, TV, etc. If you or I were to visit the MET, Yankee Stadium, or even JFK airport- we are likely going to see situations and forms of dress which aren’t appropriate for inside Beis Medrash; so my original question is what do you do? Avoid it all? Partake in moderation? With 0 sarcasm, some find an image of a Rebetzin standing next to her husband or a Sheitel advertisement as taboo, while others will completely avoid the zoo or record books because a minority of the pages have forms of dress which isn’t tznious.
Dave, the point you bring up is very important and must be addressed (although Dans Deals is a strange place to do it).
First of all, there is the issue of pritzus and hashkofa and second of all there’s the actual situation, whether its a necessity or a luxury/entertainment.
Regarding the issurim, there’s 3 levels; Issur Gamor, Mutar Gamur, or a sensitivty issue (like you point out, even a sheitel ad might bother certain people). When its Assur or Mutar there’s nothing to talk about, but when its a sensitivity issue, some might be fine with it while others will treat it like the plague (corona?).
Regarding the specific situation, it gets a bit tricky. If its a necessity, one might be allowed to do something otherwise forbidden. A doctor is a good example where the other gender can help one who needs help even though it would otherwise be forbidden.
That said, getting a cool book for your kids is definitely not a necessity and is very much unlike JFK. Regarding a stadium, it probably depends on who you ask and when in the year you go, but you might be right about it being a problem. But besides any issurim, getting the book might be a clash for those who want their kids appreciating and emulating Gedolim and Talmiei Chachamim and not those who spent 20 years practicing throwing a frisbee far distances. This is what Mark was saying “…as well as a heavy emphasis on social media, pop culture, and a host of other things that many frum Jews with average sensibilities are uncomfortable exposing their children to.” Its more a sensitivity thing than a mutar/assur thing.
Got it! Deal of the decade!
