This was selling for $499-$579 yesterday and is now the lowest price ever from Amazon.

Dan’s Note: When my freezer’s ice maker stopped working last year and couldn’t be fixed, I bought the Opal 2.0 and we love it!

It makes delicious soft crunchy ice and unlike the 1.0 version, you can schedule when you want it to be on or off so that you can use it on Shabbos. It’s not cheap, but it was much cheaper than replacing the freezer!

  • OPAL NUGGET ICE, THE GOOD ICE – Serve up chewable, crunchable, craveable nugget ice that’s ready fast and retains its flavor, unlike traditional hard cubes. Refreshing nugget ice is made from compacted ice flakes and is perfect for your favorite beverages
  • 38 POUNDS OF ICE PER DAY – Begin enjoying your first batch of ice in 10 minutes or less. Never run out of nugget ice thanks to a large capacity ice maker that makes 1.6 lbs of fresh ice per hour and holds up to 3 lbs at a time
  • BUILT-IN WIFI AND VOICE CONTROL – Pair your ice maker with the SmartHQ app to monitor device status and schedule fresh ice. Receive automatic software updates that include ice maker features and access voice control capabilities through Alexa and Google
  • WATER TANK – Eliminate the need for an outside water source with an attached water supply for ice, which allows you to produce up to three times more ice and easily detaches for clean up
  • CONVENIENT CLEANING SOLUTIONS – Advance cleaning system that helps sanitize and descale when used regularly, keeping ice tasting fresh and machine performance at its best. Water filter (P4INKFILTR) and cleaning kit (P4INKCLEAN) sold separately
  • LED DISPLAY SCREEN – Precision control is available at the touch of a screen thanks to an intuitive LED screen that illuminates when being used and darkens when at rest
  • BATCH MADE ICE – Innovative design avoids clumping and leaks by recirculating melted ice to the water reservoir. You’ll always have fresh ice on hand thanks to a smart, automatic ice maker that refills when your ice is running low

How is this shabbos friendly? Starts making ice as soon as you close the bin? Wish it had a shabbos mode.

Dan

No, with this model you can schedule it not to do that.

Isaac

What makes this good for Shabbos? I have one similar but every time I open up the ice maker to take out ice, the light and the machine goes on. How is this different?

Dan

Because this version has WiFi and an app that allows you to program when it will be turned off and not do that.

Effie

I don’t know anything about this particular machine but there might also be a concern of turning off the compressor or fan when you open its door. That is one of the main concerns with modern fridges and freezers. If you are just turning off the ice making there still might be an issue with that though it may be easy to discern when the fan is on and avoid opening it then.

Dan

The whole machine is off when the timer sets it to be off. Nothing you do affects it at all.

Effie

So the idea would be to keep it off at certain times such a meal times to allow the removal of ice but not necessarily available the whole shabbos (because it presumably would melt if left off)?

Dan

Correct, if you left it off it completely you’d have ice Friday night for several hours, but not for the next day.

You can schedule for it to be on or turn off as often as you’d like.

Ice created after the onset of Shabbat might be halachicly prohibited in certain circumstances even when automatically being created -due to the laws of “Nolad”.
Please discuss with your rabbi before using.

If I bought this two weeks ago at a higher price, can I get Amazon to give some money back? Without needing to return?

R

No – that’s one of the things Amazon stinks at.

yungermanchik

You can try to chat. It’s hit or miss.

Ice Machine

I am looking for a cheaper countertop version. Preferably below $100. Any suggestions?

is it worth so much money to pay for a ice maker it looks to much im just curious your opnion your always careful with spending

Dan

For us it was, it really is the best ice on Earth, and the Shabbos mode was the deal-maker.

And it was a whole lot cheaper than replacing my freezer.

If you really like ice, there’s no replacement for nugget ice. It really make drinks better and overall more enjoyable. IMO, totally worth the purchase.

As a bonus, if you or anyone in your family likes to eat/chew ice (my kid can’t get enough), nugget ice is cheaper than the dental bill you’ll get from grinding down teeth on regular ice (and less dangerous in its size).

Frigidaire and NewAir make knock off versions of the GE Opal that are a bit cheaper and kind of similar in that they’re smaller ice, but they can’t compete with the original and don’t produce ice that is nearly as crunchy or soft. I don’t believe they are programmable for shabbos either.

Upon reviewing the Amazon reviews, it looks like a lot of people are not happy with this particular model. It seems that the warrantee is very poor, and the support is very difficult to deal with.

Dan

Been using mine for a year without issue. Vast majority of reviews are positive.

Moshe

Doesn’t the machine mantain the existing ice even when scheduled off? Does opening the bin to take ice not trigger the compressor or fan to begin cooling?

Dan

No, it’s completely off.
There is no cooler for the ice box itself, it lasts on its own until it melts. If the machine is on it will make more ice when you take out ice.

avi

generally the ice maker in your freezer is an added attachment and can be replaced independently of the freezer depending on the model of your freezer parts are between 60.00-100.00 dollars
unless you have one of those expensive freezers with auto ice dispensers
that im unfamiliar with

Dan

Ours makes ice, but it dribbles down the freezer, freezing up the whole system.
They tried fixing it without luck, so we just turned it off.

The ice from this ice maker has developed quite the cult following – both online and in my house.
When my daughter heads off to school, her entire carpool practically demands their daily dose of it. At the summer camp we ran, the counselors brag to their friends about the top-tier ice they get to enjoy.

I originally bought it because my wife is a serious ice enthusiast, and our freezer’s ice maker just couldn’t keep up. Too slow, not enough—especially with the ice water crowd in our house, not to mention on hiking days – where everyone needs to fill up their water backpacks.

Turns out, it was one of my best purchases for the ice addicts in the family.
Highly recommend—your ice game will never be the same!

(i got the one with the side tank – not the XL. I definitely recommend the side tank. not particularly the XL tank tho. For those who have easy access – you can hook it up directly to a water source.)
The shabbos friendly “break” is a sweet plus.

Moe

I know a good cult buster if you are interested. PM me for details.
