The $20 discount is towards buying a new Kindle. If you scroll further down on the page from Dan’s link you’ll find what the additional trade-in value is for various used readers (Sony, Kobo, B&N, etc.)
The $20 off is for opening an Amazon credit card. A $20 Amazon.com Gift Card will instantly be loaded into your Amazon.com Account upon the approval of your credit card application.
