I still remember watching a partial solar eclipse in Cleveland as an 8 year old in March 1993. It didn’t seem all that impressive, but my 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Curtiss, explained that in about 30 years, there would be a total eclipse in Cleveland and it would get pitch black in middle of the day. Now that sounded cool! But to a kid, 30 years may as well be a million years away.
But the years go by much faster now, and here we are.
Will the weather cooperate? Nobody knows!
But poor weather was also forecast for us in 2017. We were visiting my wife’s parents in Kansas then and angling to view the eclipse. We originally planned on viewing it in S. Joseph, but the forecast that morning convinced us to drive to Boonville, MO, which was a good move as the show was rained out in S. Joseph, but turned out to be glorious in Boonville despite the cloudy forecast.
There are many forecasting models out there.
The NY Times map is excellent and works from a blend of models. It shows that at 3pm there may be 0-20% cloud coverage in Maine, 20-40% cloud coverage in Burlington, Cleveland (near Lake Erie should be best), Indianapolis, and Plattsburgh, 40-60% in Dallas, and 60-80% in Austin, Buffalo, and Rochester.
The National Weather Service also has a map that it updates daily.
The Clear Dark Sky map also shows where clouds will be found in white.
If you have a car, take a look at the various forecasts in the morning and decide where to go! You can view the exact path and times here. You’ll want to be as close to the blue line as possible.
The next US total solar eclipse won’t be until August 2044, when Montana and North Dakota will experience totality for just half the time of the 2024 eclipse.
Part of the eclipse experience is being surrounded by people who ooh and aah when they feel the temperature rapidly plummet, hear the animals change noises, notice all of the crescent-shaped shadows covering the ground that are caused by the eclipse, and much more that you will only experience on the ground.
The main things is that it is critical to be in a place where there is 100% coverage, as 99% coverage is simply incomparable to the full total eclipse experience!
It will be decades until a total solar eclipse returns to the US. Will you plan on seeing tomorrow’s total eclipse? Where do you hope to see it?

Will it be visible from Boston Logan? Chase lounge specifically
Couldn’t care less
I hear ‘ya, but as a member of the 7 continents club take my word for it.
It is one of the most amazing experiences on Earth.
100% agree and I haven’t been to all seven continents but I did take in from Missouri traveling from California the last one about seven years ago.
I came to Texas into Dallas for Shabbat but it is predicting cloud cover so flying to St. Louis today, thank you points, and then probably driving two hours south where there appears to be a pocket of up to 20% clouds.
Holding our breath, just didn’t want to make the treck all the way to Boston then to drive to Vermont because of the difficulty getting back with limited flights and points with such peak pricing.
But I totally agree, quite an incredible site to see, or not see, get it 🙂 good luck to us all with the weather!
Where are you driving down to? Cape Girardeau?
Probably there or around there. Will keep an eye on the maps / weather. You?
Probably there or Carbondale. Might make a game time decision to drive down to Indianapolis if the former two are cloudy in the AM
I’ll watch a a partial eclipse from my backyard (91%)
Same here, i wish this was a cause for a day off (so many are un/self-employed?)
It’s called PTO
In places in the line of totality, many schools/offices are closed. Here in Cleveland for example, public schools are closed for the whole day, some private schools are open but only for half a day (the eclipse doesn’t begin here until the afternoon), and offices are closing because of all the traffic expected. So ya at least in places in totality, it’s become quite a big deal and is a cause for a day off 🙂
Just close your eyes for a couple of minutes.
You left our why it is so exciting. The moon is just the exact size and covers the sun perfectly, and leaves exposed the heliosphere, which is an atmosphere of super charged gases. With the sun’s bright light blocked perfectly, we get to see a sky show of colors and flares that are always there but never visible. Technology can’t come even close to capturing this as we lack the ability to record and display the nuances and shades of color. The human eye, of course, evolved over millions of years to see this color display that is visible about once in a lifetime. A bunch of very happy coincidences.
The human eye was created by G-d and can see things that “technology can’t come even close to capturing”. Thank You G-d!
Hakol Kol esav!
Can you see these colors and shades through the eclipse glasses? Is it safe to look at?
Drove 180 miles today to Lebanon IN to experience this rare phenomenon tomorrow. Genuine K&F ND100000 filter for my Canon DSLR cost bupkis via Temu. Hope the cloud cover permits a decent shot.
Would love to put together a minyan for Mincha in Lebanon, IN, tomorrow at 2:20 pm (earliest time for Mincha). I will have two. Anyone interested?
I will be there IYH- I am only 1- where will you be?
Why daven mincha at 2:20? Are you planning to daven mariv during totality?
Is it worth going to totally if it’s going to be cloudy?
Yes, you can still see it as long as it’s not fully clouded in, just look for the best location you can make it to.
Dan which Chabad house will have the total eclipse and is closest to Monsey?
Dan where are you going to be? We were thinking between Acacia and Beachwood High school.
But now we’re debating if we should drive north towards Lake Erie… if it’s worth doing that, where would you reccomend? Just the beach? Could be absolutely mobbed…
Tentative plan is my house. 😀
But will look at forecasts in the morning and reassess. Lakeshore is an option, as is driving southwest.
Thanks! Where on the Lakeshore would you think of heading?
Don’t have anything specific planned, just going to look at forecast maps and make a gametime decision.
So what did you decide Dan? Beachwood or driving to the lake? One forecast indicated that west to the lake might be better than north?
Beachwood for now
That’s where we settled on, since there aren’t a lot of clouds now… even though forecast still says 55% at 3pm. Did you stick with your Beachwood plans?
Yes, though Something Fishy and other DDFers went here:

According to this map, the eclipse will not even start in CLE until 7:15 PM, is that right?
No, the times are in UTC/GMT. Subtract 4 hours for EDT.
Traveled to Cleveland for it!
any recommendations where to go?
Welcome to town!
Just look at the forecast, but odds are that a lakefront location may have the least cloud coverage.
If I go to Buffalo what’s the best place to see it there?
Buffalo isn’t looking great right now, can you drive anywhere else?
I have flights to and from Buffalo that I booked last night. What place is looking best? Maybe I could get a flight there. (From NY)
Maine is looking excellent. Take a look at the links in this post.
I live in Houlton Maine and we are 100% cloudless Monday. We are also at the epicenter.
Hi!
What about Syracuse my?
Looking better (40-60% cloud coverage) than Buffalo (60-80%), but you’ll have to keep checking the forecast.
Ohio and Vermont should be clearer than NY and Maine/Upper NH are looking excellent.
Oh Dan are you back from Israel?
If we can’t fully see it here in NJ, we’ll just take the earthquake as a consolation prize.
How do I vote? I actually “can” travel tomorrow, and although I “am” interested in seeing it, it’s not worth for me killing a day for that. Would much rather have the eclipse coming closer to my area…
As of now, we’re thinking of going west from CLE to south of Toledo. Looks like high clouds only there. To be revisited Monday morning.
Are you able to see totality if traveling through it on an airplane, or best to be on the ground?
Dan, which weather forecast is the most accurate to follow for Ohio?
Does everyone have off work tomorrow?
seems to be turning into a national holiday.
What’s the best way to determine what spot within a metro is the best for viewing?
If there’s a place that is usually great for viewing stars that is a good bet
I know people want to see the eclipse, but people must be extremely careful with there children, I have a grandchild who lives in Israel, a bit over a year ago there was a solar eclipse in Israel, his Rabbie took the class to see it with proper glasses but unfortunately my grandson was curious as many children are and took off his glasses to look directly at the eclipse for aprox only 10 seconds and burned both of his retinas and must now use a magnify glass to read and is very frustrated the Dr said then there were a couple of other children with the same issue
It’s not for me to say if schools should be open or not tomorrow but Rabbis and Morahs must understand that it is difficult to watch a whols class at the same time and children are curious and all it takes is a few seconds, so parents and teachers be careful
Huh? Heard a shiur that Israel doesn’t get a solar eclipse.
well maybe it wasn’t a total eclipse but there was a definite eclipse
I’m sorry to say but there was no solar eclipse a year ago in Israel.
And looking at the sun for 10 seconds doesn’t usually destroy the eyes permanently.
But yes, people should be careful, especially with their kids.
https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/israel/jerusalem?iso=20221025#:~:text=October%2025%2C%202022%20%E2%80%94,Partial%20Solar%20Eclipse%20%E2%80%94%20Jerusalem
well there was one maybe its a year and a half already have to ask my son , and all he looked was aprox 10 seconds ok maybe 12 seconds , burned both of his retinas , he was just Bar Mitzva so he was almost 12 when it happened, he has his peripheral vision but can not ead directly in front of him
so please be careful in what you post if you don’t understand the danger
I can’t travel so I’ll be watching on my tv.
Watching an eclipse may damage your eyes, TV damages your brain.
If I cut out a black plastic round disk and hold it against the sun do I save myself the six hour drive?
For those of us who failed to plan, How dangerous is it actually to look at it without proper glasses? (Not at totality)
Extremely dangerous. Can cause permanent blindness in several seconds.
Stare at the sun for longer than you would be able to on a regular day and you will begin burning out cells in your retina within seconds.
Try and report back
Use a pin hole to project it
Should have voting option for partial…
Is an eclipse potentially ‘bad” sign for Klal Yisrael/the world?
Why would the moon covering the sun be a bad sign?
THe yesod haavodah says that that’s only during kiddush hachodesh & not when it’s according to a set calendar.
There are different opinions from Gemara, Poskim, etc.
10 minute halachah R A Lebowitz has some sources, Star-k webinar, etc. and there are other sources…..
Opposite. It’s a bad sign for the umos who go according to the sun
I’m in Cleveland now, Geneva looks like it might be a drop better are ppl considering driving 45 min out or just sticking in Cleveland?
