William Sanders, Starwood’s “online guest feedback coordinator”, has confirmed that there have been issues with AMEX not properly crediting people the 10,000 starpoints for opening up a Starwood AMEX card.
AMEX is currently working on a resolution, and he says that there is no reason to call up AMEX or Starwood.
Personally, I called up AMEX about my not receiving the bonus points on my most recent Starwood AMEX card that I opened and got nowhere with the first rep (“you have to wait 12 to 16 weeks to receive the points”) but the supervisor I spoke with was aplogetic and credited the 10,000 Starpoints on the spot-they showed up in my Starwood account the next day! (Hint: Things move faster when you threaten to close the account!)

Every credit card out there says that the bonus is only for new customers, that’s nothing new….
but dan, cant they say they aren’t posting the starwood points because i already have gotten and canceled seven other cards from them?? so im not a new customer??
I had the same problem and after a few times calling amex, besides for crediting me the 10,000 points they gave me 5,000 bonus.
Nice going jay!
Did you ask for compensation for the delay, or did they just give it to you as a courtesy?
A friend of mine signed up for the AMEX gold card when they had the 25K AMEX MR points promo, and when he complained about the delay they gave him an additional 10K points for a total of 35K points!
I got a letter last week from amex saying that as a valued starwood bussness card holder they credited my account with 15,000 points!
anyone else get this?
hey dan another cool thing about starwood. i was speaking to a cs rep about my missing points and i was looking at the same time on amex’s website and i saw something about gold status. so i asked the rep to upgrade me to gold status and he asked me if i had a promo code, and i said no. then he asked me if i spent minimum 30k or stayed however many nigts, i said no i did not it says here on amex’s site that i do not need these to be upgraded. so he asked me if i have an amex platinum card, i said i do and he then upgraded me right then over the phone to gold status!!!!!
i refreshed my account and there it was! awesome!
i am going to call now and get bonus points too! i will let everyone know how that went shortly.
hmmm no luck even with a supervisor! i usually get these but this tim it was a no-go.
suggestions anyone?
they told me since i have another starwood card i wont get it, but i will get the 15000 bonus for spending 15000
Dan,
Please share with readers:
If you are an AAA member, they have a deal with Starwood and if you are just plain preferred guest, the AAA membership will entitle you to automatically upgrade to gold status. After I saw this on the AAA South website (see this link: http://www.aaasouth.com/hotel_starwood.asp),
I simply called the number they listed for Starwood and the CS agent upgraded me once I gave him my AAA membership number.
Take care.

PS – a question: I have just finished 6 months on personal and six months on business Starwoods – received 10k and 15k bonuses for each. How can I save the large credit line I have on both and yet reapply to get the start up bonus and the 15k bonus? I recall you writing that if one has an active card they will not give the 10k bonus, so what do I do? I don’t have another personal card to which I can transfer my credit line…..Please help me out.
Is it the same amount of mileage to go from EY to USA as it is from USA to EY?
I am a first timer and I did’nt get the bonus yet. (been about 3 1/2 months). does anyone know whether the problem is all accounts including new cardmembers?
Danfan:
Officially AAA offers Starwood Preferred Plus status, the same status that you automatically get for having a Starwood AMEX. I’m not quite sure how you got Gold from that, but congrats and enjoy!
You are able to get the bonus again even if you have a card, and you can then transfer the credit line from the older card to it. Try to keep AMEX credit lines under 25K/card and never utilize over half of the credit limit on any AMEX card in order to avoid an AMEX F/R.
abs:
Yes.
Dave:
It is affecting all Starwood AMEX cards, whether it is your 1st card or the 100th.
dear dan,
I see that this is what you wrote “Try to keep AMEX credit lines under 25K/card and never utilize over half of the credit limit on any AMEX card in order to avoid an AMEX F/R.”
is there any amount on an american express rewards plus gold card (charge card, without a limit) that you should watch out to charge because of a F/R?????
ugh, still haven’t got my 10k points. I called a few times, they keep saying they’ll do it, and I should keep an eye on it…
grrr
YL:
Put in a zip code from AAA south – try 33160 or 33140, and when the following page opens, go to the lower half of the page under “SPG” and there is a number to call. The number is to Starwood, not AAA.
For your convenience, here is what it says on AAA’s website, and this is the reason I was upgraded to gold:
“Call 1-866-782-7737 to join Starwood Preferred Guest® or to upgrade your account today – simply mention enrollment code “AAA/CAA” to start enjoying the benefits now.”
Hope it works for you all.
Confirmed… called for the 4th time today to demand my points, and I’m still not getting them.
They said there is a technical problem and there’s nothing they can do.
The rep I spoke to apologized profusely, but refused to give me points right away.
TO danfan thanks im now a gold member i just called them and said that i got a mailer stating that this “AAA/CAA†code upgrades me to gold status and they did it right away thanks loads
what are the advantages of being a GOLD member?
please advise
thank you
You mention you can fly direct to TLV for 40000. Please explain how. I looked around and it does not explain.
Thank You Danfan!
I just follwed your instructions and got myself gold status. It worked like a charm.
Is it a coincidence that all the secular buisness men can’t seem to put enough together to get upgraded while all the fruma are sitting at the gold level!!!!! Thanx Dan
herbie- Gold status doesnt really do much for you buddy.
Platinum is where its at.
Dan –
my platinum for business just deposited yet another $250 for signing up…(LAST YEAR!) – Like you said in a prior post its the card that keeps on giving!
regarding the gold status they said that this promo code only enables me to be upgraded to preferred guest status (which I already have) not gold status.
Any ideas on how I can get gold status?
Like I already said, AAA is only supposed to give you Starwood Preferred Plus status, which is the same that the Starwood AMEX automatically gives you.
It doesn’t say anywhere that AAA gives you Starwood Gold status.
That’s not to say that a rep wont give it to you for AAA, just that they’re not supposed to.
Hi,
I live just north to you guys in beautiful Canada – is there any way to get this deal with a canadian address/social security number?
Any ideas?
Thx!
