Emirates recently massively reduced their fuel surcharges:
The new rates can be found here.
Emirates A380 first class is affectionately known as “Shower Class” and JAL miles have long been one of the best ways to book that.
Sure, you get your own walled-in suite and access to the onboard bar.
But it’s the onboard shower that sets it apart. My review of the experience can be found here.
Due to COVID-19, Emirates isn’t operating showers and service is limited, but hopefully those days will come to an end soon. You can try booking now for after you think those restrictions will be lifted or you can wait and see what happens.
You can change dates on an award booked with Emirates miles for $25 or refund an award for $75.
You can change dates or refund an award booked with JAL miles for ¥3,100, currently about $28.
A shower class flight can cost $27,000 round-trip, but with miles it’s a whole lot less. Plus Emirates has excellent award availability.
Previously the fuel surcharges and taxes added over $1,700 to the cost of an award ticket. But now those have been massively reduced!
There are 2 good options for booking Emirates awards, either with Emirates miles or with JAL miles.
You can book with Emirates miles by logging in on their website. A round-trip first class award in A380 Shower Class from JFK to Milan is now 135K Emirates miles plus just $116 in taxes and fees! Previously the taxes and fees were over $1,100.
A round-trip first class award in 777 First Class from Newark to Athens is now 135K Emirates miles plus just $122 in taxes and fees! Previously the taxes and fees were over $1,100.
A round-trip first class award in A380 Shower Class from JFK to Dubai is now 217.5K Emirates miles plus just $360 in taxes and fees! Previously the taxes and fees were over $1,700.
I decided to check on what JAL is doing with Emirates fuel surcharges as well.
You may recall that back in 2017, JAL started collecting fuel surcharges on Emirates flights. The US DoT stepped in and required JAL to return people Starpoints that were transferred to JAL to book Emirates awards. The US DoT also forced JAL to refund fuel surcharges for people that booked Emirates awards in the interim.
Now that Emirates massively lowered their insane fuel surcharges, it appears based on my searches that JAL has completely stopped collecting any fuel surcharges on Emirates!
JAL also has the ability to book Emirates awards online. You will need to be logged into a JAL mileage account and then you can search for partner awards here.
I’d recommend starting your award search on alaskaairlines.com as they have a flexible award calendar, though it’s worth noting that JAL’s availability on Emirates is actually better than Alaska’s. Alaska’s mileage rates are extremely pricey, so it won’t be worth using those on Emirates flights. A round-trip from JFK to Milan in shower class would set you back some 360K miles. After getting a feel for availability try booking your ticket on JAL’s less intuitive site.
JAL’s distance based partner award chart can be found here.
A round-trip first class award in A380 Shower Class from JFK to Dubai is 165K JAL miles plus just $56 in taxes and fees! Previously the taxes and fees were over $1,700.
A round-trip first class award in A380 Shower Class from JFK to Milan is 135K JAL miles plus just $51 in taxes and fees! Previously the taxes and fees were over $1,100.
A round-trip first class award in 777 First Class from Newark to Athens is now 135K JAL miles plus just $58 in taxes and fees! Previously the taxes and fees were over $1,100.
Need Emirates miles?
That’s easy, you can transfer points from AMEX (1K:1K), Capital One (2K:1K), Chase (1K:1K), or Citi (1K:1K) instantly to Emirates. You can also transfer increments of 60K Marriott points into 25K Emirates miles.
Reach up those points on cards like Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Sapphire Reserve.
Need JAL miles?
That’s trickier. If you’re one of the 19 people on the planet that still has the Barclays Arrival Premier card, you can transfer points at a 1.7K:1K ratio. Otherwise the only real option is transferring increments of 60K Marriott points into 25K JAL miles.
You can also transfer 330K Marriott points into 100K JAL or Emirates miles and 7 nights at a Marriott hotel.
Will you book any Emirates awards?

Is business YQ cheaper as well or just first?
Yes, across the board.
How do yo you do this? “You can also transfer 330K Marriott points into 100K JAL or Emirates miles and 7 nights at a Marriott hotel.”

What is jal infant policy how abt emirates
Still got that Barclays card, not really sure why, there are ton of fee free 2% cards…
Well it’s great for earning JAL miles!
How much are one ways with JAL?
Click on the award chart in the post.
Seems like a good deal if “luxury” travel is your thing (although an inflight shower has to be one of the most ridiculous gimmicks ever). Are award seats available? And is Emirates still flying these routes with A380s (which seem to be going the way of the dinosaur)?
1. If you try a shower after a 14 hour flight you won’t think it to be a gimmick at all.
2. Award availability is wide open.
3. Yes and as I wrote in the latest roundup, Emirates reaffirmed their A380 commitment:

I took Shower class, funny story. The attendant was showing me around the bathroom, and pointed to the so called , 5 minute shower timer. I noticed the arrow was between yellow and red, and asked the attendant if that was correct, he said yes. Silly me, it ran out after 1 1/2 minutes while I had shampoo and suds all over.
Oof!
Sounds like that should be worth some bonus miles though 😀
How many points JFK-MLE using EK miles?
Id like to know this as well. Im assuming you get a stopover in DBX for free?
Is the Barclays Arrival Plus different than Barclays Arrival Premier?
Yes, only the Premier can transfer miles and the card is no longer available.
Does this work from TLV?
Emirates doesn’t fly to TLV, but it would work to AMM.
Is it really that simple to cross from Amman into Israel? Since you can’t take a rental car, how is it done and doesn’t it take forever?
1. You can book a seperate flight on RJ from AMM-TLV. Can even use Avios.
2. You can use the Avi Liberman method:
Lol, he doesn’t exactly make it seem like it’s the easiest, hassle-free, cheapest way to get to Israel…. 🙂
In all seriousness, have a lot of Jews done this and is it really a recommended way to to get to Israel?
Good update but do you have to repeat this line “affectionately known as “Shower Class” ” every time you write about EK’s first class? It’s so corny and no one (besides you) calls it that.
Feel free not to use the website
@dan please keep calling it ‘Shower Class’
‘No filter’
is the perfect name for your comment
My, some of your blog readers are really kvetchy! 🙂
Thank you as always for the heads up.
can you post which countries have restrrictions?
i was one of those 19 people tlll recently….do emirates allow one way redemptions ?
Yes.
Seriously? In the middle of a pandemic do you you really want to shower on an airplane?
Good luck!

Hey Dan,
Off topic question. In the beginning of the year we booked United tickets to TLV for this August, via Chase UR portal (with return flights via Air Canada). With the continued uncertainty, do you believe United will be extending their travel waivers before month end? Any recommendation? Thanks in advance!
Stay tuned.
Any idea on when you Dubai/MLE would let foreigners in?
Thanks. BTW, Happy 1/2 Birthday!
Does not JAL have a CC?
https://www.jalusacard.com/en/about/
JAL miles expire after 36 months regardless of activity. I wouldn’t proactively lock myself into expiring miles.
Is it really worth it? (for the experience) I have about 600k chase and 100k amex points (and a bit of AA and Marriott)
Read my trip report?
Also Emirates removed 90% of their availability from Qantas
Dan,
What does the redemption look like if I book with Korean miles? I have like 140 000 that I need to get rid of soon?
Are the rates on ek variable? I was only able to price a one way jfk to dxb at 136k in first so round trip would be 272k not 217k (no dates were working for the return leg so I wasn’t able to price a round trip but im fairly certain ek charges half for one way)
No, both JAL and Emirates charge more for one-ways.
Search one-way both ways to find dates, then search for round-trip.
Is this specifically true for first or also for biz ? Because my searches in business resulted in 100k one way and 200k round trip
Can israelies fly emirates?
If they have another passport.
I cannot find any availability in first class from NYC- Milan
It says that business is available but not first class. any ideas?
What company meal is served outta dxb on first class and how abt from Europe to dxb F
