Update: This offer ends at 11:59pm ET!

Originally posted on 10/6:

You can register here for 30% bonus when you transfer hotel points to United miles.

  • The promotion runs through 10/31. It is run by United, so you won’t see any mention of it on the hotel’s points site or during the transfer process. As long as you initiate the transfer by 11:59pm ET on 10/31 you will get the bonus from United.
  • United will add 30% bonus miles if you have earned at least 40K miles from all transfers from hotel programs made between 10/1-10/31.
  • You can earn up to 25K bonus miles with this promotion per United account.

United will add the 30% bonus miles by 1/31/25.

Hotel point transfers to airlines are generally not worthwhile even with this bonus, with the exception of Marriott.

You can always transfer Marriott Rewards points into United miles at a 2:1 ratio, with 10K bonus miles for every 60K Marriott points.

In the past, United added 30% more miles, for a total of 39,000 miles on a 60K Marriott transfer. Unfortunately, the new terms exclude the 10K bonus miles, so a 60K Marriott transfer would earn a total of 36,000 United miles after 6K bonus miles from the 30% bonus on the 20K base miles, while the bonus wouldn’t apply to the 10K bonus miles.

Even years after the SPG merger, the Marriott’s mileage conversion tool still doesn’t account for the bonus Marriott points they add onto a transfer when you transfer in increments of 60K points, but those points will be added. The tool calculates 60K points as converting into 20K United miles at the 3:1 ratio, but you’ll actually get 30K United miles (or 25K miles with most other airlines) for every 60K points transferred thanks to the 10K bonus miles that will be added onto transfers in 60K increments made to United for an effective 2:1 transfer ratio.

With the additional 30% bonus you’ll get an an effective 1.66:1 ratio if you:

  • Transfer 120K Marriott points with this promo and you’ll get 72,000 United miles.
  • Transfer 180K Marriott points with this promo and you’ll get 108,000 United miles.
  • Transfer 240K Marriott points with this promo and you’ll get 144,000 United miles.

You can transfer Marriott points between members here if you want to earn more bonus United miles for other members.

If you value Marriott points at 0.6 cents each, 60K Marriott points would be worth $360. You would get 36K United miles from a transfer of 60K Marriott points. At that valuation, you’re looking at an effective cost of 1 cent per United mile, which is a very good deal.

Of course this depends on what value you typically get for your Marriott points and United miles.

It also doesn’t take into account that it’s easier to generate United miles at a good value than it is to generate Marriott points, so that alone may mean that it’s not worth taking advantage of this deal.

Will you transfer points to United with this promo?

Read the post, particularly the third bullet.

Have any of you gotten a recent data point confirmation that we’ll get 2:1 instead of 3:1 as shown on the points transfer screen? I remember Marriott/United changed the credit (as mentioned in this post) last round, so it seems like they could change this at any time without broadcasting it and that would kill the deal.

I transferred 137k Bonvoy and got 45,667 plus 20,000.
is this what I was supposed to get?

DealRaider

Yes, thanks for the data point. You got 3:1 + 20K (10K for each 60K points), which made it 2:1 on the 120K and only 3:1 on the remaining 17K.

Zee

got it. yes, that does add up to what your saying and what’s laid out in the post. thanks.
