Transfer AMEX Membership Rewards Points Into Marriott Points And Get A 30% Bonus

AMEX points normally transfer into Marriott points at a 1K:1K ratio, but until tomorrow you can get 1,300 Marriott points for every 1,000 AMEX points.

This will work with AMEX cards that earn Membership Rewards points, including:

• AMEX Gold Business Card
• American Express® Gold Card
• The Platinum Card® from American Express
• AMEX Green Consumer Card
• AMEX Everyday Preferred Consumer Card

That’s not a particularly good deal. I’d value Marriott points at about 0.65 cents each, so with typical usage you would only get a value of 0.85 cents per AMEX point or so. That’s not nearly as good as you can do with transferring points to Hilton or airlines.

However if you need some Marriott points for a niche hotel redemption then it can make sense.

Marriott is offering off-peak pricing at most of its hotels as described in this post, which can make for some great bargains.

Or for example 5 nights in an overwater villa with a private pool at the S. Regis Maldives is 365K points:

A paid stay is $10,631, so that’s a value of 3.43 cents per Marriott point or 3.79 cents per AMEX point.

If you transfer Marriott points into airline miles at 60K increments you get a 25% bonus, so it can also make sense to transfer if you need a few points to hit a 60K increment.

60K Marriott points converts into 25K airline miles or 27K United miles, so it won’t be worth transferring AMEX points just to transfer to an airline as it would take 46,154 AMEX points to get 60K Marriott points with this transfer bonus. That is unless you really want miles with a Marriott partner like Aegean, Alaska, American, Copa, Korean, Lufthansa, or Turkish that don’t transfer directly from AMEX.
