20K Starwood points can transfer into 25K airline miles with dozens of airlines.
That used to include Continental and United, but as the AMEX and Chase co-brand battles heated up, the Starwood transfer ratio to those airlines was chopped to a measly 20K:12.5K transfer ratio.
Marriott and United both have co-brand relationships with Chase and have a much cozier relationship. That means you can now take advantage of those relationships even if you’re an SPG loyalist.
-If you have Starwood Platinum Status you can match it to Marriott Platinum which will also get you United Silver status!
–You can transfer 56K Marriott Rewards points into 25K United miles. That’s more miles than any other airline Marriott partners with.
–You can transfer 19K Starwood points into 57K Marriott Rewards points, which will give you 25K United miles and you’ll have 1,000 Marriott Rewards leftover. You can convert those leftover points back into 333 Starpoints. Effectively you can transfer 18,667 Starpoints into 25K United miles, an effective 33.9% bonus compared Starwood’s normal 25% bonus.
-An even better deal is with Marriott’s miles+nights packages. 270K Marriott Rewards points would give you 132K United miles and 7 nights in a Marriott category 1-5 hotel.
A transfer of 90K Starpoints into 270K Marriott Rewards points will make that happen.
-Even if you don’t use the 7 night hotel certificate being able to transfer 90K Starpoints into 132K United miles is an effective 46.7% bonus!
-The 7 night hotel certificate expires in 1 year, though Marriott currently will extend them for 1 additional year if you contact them.
-If you wanted 7 nights at the tier 3 Ritz-Carlton Herzliya you would need 420K Marriott or 140K Starpoints for that stay and 132K United miles.
-If you wanted 7 nights at the category 7 Renaissance Tel Aviv Hotel you would need 330K Marriott or 110K Starpoints for that stay and 132K United miles.

@Kevin:
No.
@Dan Thanks for breaking this down! Do I get a HT for making this into a separate post? (Only partially kidding:)
Can I transfer chase point to Starwoods points and then use those to get united miles to give me a better chase value?
Do I need to use 7 night certificate at once? Or is it possible to break it for shorter stays?
When is this deal good till thank you
Is it a one time stay for 7 nights or can you break it Into multiple stays?
Dan – where do I make the transfer from, and is there any code to be entered?
So 1000 Amex MR is now 1000 Marriot Reward point or 500 United miles?
I have been saving my spg points for travel to Israel for my family and I. Would it make sense to convert to United under this deal? Thanks Dan.
So many options……. making my head spin….
thanks for breaking this down
Hey Dan thank for your hard work!
First do the 7 nights have to be used in a row?
Second if I have the right card from Chase will that give me gold spg status?
To transfer from SPG does the names need to match?
im spg gold , how do i convert that to plat so i can get united silver
@2 Q’s
Yes – 7 consecutive nights
No. I have SPG Gold from my Amex Plat
Does it pay to buy starpoints for any of these deals? Does it monetize?
I feel like I will most definitely be taking advantage of the united and 7 night Marriott stay, I need to accumulate a bit more SPG, how time sensitive would you say this is?
Why do you word it “If you wanted 7 nights at the tier 3 Ritz-Carlton Herzliya you would need 420K Marriott or 140K Starpoints for that stay AND 132K United miles” Why the and aren’t you getting the 132,000 bonus united miles?
Also what kind of room is the certificate good for? Most basic? Can you upgrade to a suite?
What are the transfer times from spg to Marriott to united ?
I have spg gold. will marriot gold give free lounge club access?
Dan, do you ever sleep? I get text messages at 2:45 am. I also get them a half an hour before shabbos. You are very very dedicated. Thank you so much!

@Bjfly:
Not a good value.
@Jane:

@Rs:

@Ralph:
Follow the links in the post.
@DL:
Right.
@Toisrael:
If there’s availability for your dates it may.
@2 Q’s:

The Ritz card offers some status options.

@mia flyer:
With 25 hotel stays.
@BagBag:
It may make sense.
@Mark:
Not time sensitive.
@Steven:
You’re getting a 7 night stay and 132K miles.

@Yanky:
SPG to Marriott is instant.
Marriott to United will take a few days.

@paul:
Unlikely, but if you try let us know.
so if i have 30k spg and my brother (dif address)has 60k spg can we both transfer to my marriot? or does the 90k need to be in one shot? Thank you
Maybe I did something wrong, but I just tried to transfer 20K points and was informed that I’d get 12K points bc of the 2:1 ratio. Any site where I can prove that I should get the full 25K?
@bit confused:
First combine the Starpoints and then transfer.
@Angie:
You need to transfer the Starpoints to Marriott and then transfer to United.
Wow, extra 50k SPg’s gets you 7 nights in Ritzlyia thats a pretty sweet deel
I don’t have a current need for United miles, but may need to use some in the future. I know you don’t have a crystal ball Dan, but is there any concern that this transfer rates will be scaled back? I prefer to keep spg points in the spg account and transfer when needed. Thoughts and advice? TIA.
Can you give away the 7 nights or gotta use yourself? can I transfer to my moms southwest or names gotta match?
“which will also get you United Silver status!” I dont see in this link an option of extending your Marriott silver to united silver, can you please clarify
@Moshe G:
Yup.
@Pghtown:
Should be safe.
@HAMAVIN:
You should be able to order the 7 night certificate to anyone. But either way, you can always add an additional guest onto the reservation.
@Moshe:
I never wrote that Marriott Silver gets United Silver.
@Dan: sorry my bad. it says platinum to silver.
Okay… I have never really understood this, but I’ve never come close to having that many Marriott points to need to understand it. Now, it turns out I have 58,000 spg points and 103,000 MR. (plus 14,000 Marriott pts.) So… I may have a shot at one of these. (Not an aspirational one, but one nonetheless….) I already have Southwest companion pass until 12-31-16 so the only worthwhile thing with that would be to wait to redeem…United miles are great and I have zero…. hmmmm hmmmm Lots to consider… GRACIAS DAN!!
sorry dan but can you please explain why it is necessary? didnt you say that the marriott doesnt have to match the spg? i dont want to wait the 30 days from when i change addresses if i dont need to? Thanks
In order to get the rates you described, I thought you need to be a United elite or a higher level Marriott via the Rewards Plus benefits. Are you saying this transfer rate is available to regular members?
I only have Starwood Gold and now Marriott Gold.
Can you use this 7 night certificate at any Marriot? or is it only category 1-5 or something else. Can it be used at the Ritz? What are the limitations? And also does it have to be 7 nights or can it be 2 rooms 3 nights plus one room 1 night?
Hi Dan,
Great work as usual….I believe Amex points can be switched for Marriott….seems like a good use to turn them into United?
Also can you switch Avios to Marriott as a way to get them to united…is this a good use?
Thanks
I know SPG does not sell Gift cards anymore. Does anyone know if marriott GC work at SPG hotels now??
Called SPG to transfer 18,667 points to get 25K United miles and SPG said no. Should I call United directly?
So I tried doing this Transferred my SPG points to Marriott and now have 270,000 points but when I fill out the form and hit submit it says error please try again at another time. Anyone else having this problem
How do I transfer the points if I wanted to do 90k? I use the Marriot link but does not work.
Also, if my wife and I have different last names, how can I transfer? Are there any Marriots/Sheratons in Jerusalem?
Can you please give me step by step how to transfer 90k starpoints to get 132k united
Sorry for not understanding what you wrote in the article
Thanks
With the transfer of points and the 7 night Marriott stay, does it have to be 7 nights at the same hotel or cAn one do, 3 nights at “x” and 4 nights and “z”?
