Singapore Airlines is devaluing their miles once again. This comes after the airline incentivized mileage transfers over COVID by offering elite status.
When they devalued in 2017 they killed off one of the greatest bargains in award travel, increasing the cost of a first class suite saver award between JFK and Frankfurt from 57,375 miles to 76K miles. On the plus side, they also stopped collecting fuel surcharges when they did that devaluation.
2 years later they devalued their miles again. The cost of a first class suite saver award between JFK and Frankfurt went from 76K miles to 86K miles. Availability was wide open for travel in 2022.
Effective 7/5, they will devalue yet again. The cost of a first class suite saver award between JFK and Frankfurt will go from 86K miles to 97K miles. Still a great deal, but not quite the bargain it once was.
Other changes include:
- Business class saver award rate between Houston-Manchester or JFK-Frankfurt will increase from 72K miles to 81K miles each way.
- Business class saver award rate between Houston/JFK/Newark and Singapore will increase from 99K miles to 111.5K miles each way.
- First/Suites class saver award rate between Houston/JFK/Newark and Singapore will increase from 132K miles to 148.5K miles each way.
- Business class saver award rate between LA/Seattle/San Francisco and Singapore will increase from 95K miles to 107K miles each way.
- First/Suites class saver award rate between LA/Seattle/San Francisco and Singapore will increase from 130K miles to 146.5K miles each way.
- Business class saver award rate between LA and Tokyo will increase from 92K miles to 103.5K miles each way.
- First class saver award rate between LA and Tokyo will increase from 107K miles to 120.5K miles each way.
- Business class saver award rate between San Francisco and Hong Kong will increase from 89K miles to 100.5K miles each way.
- First class saver award rate between San Francisco and Hong Kong will increase from 104K miles to 117K miles each way.
This also means that partner airlines like Alaska now charge fewer miles for a Singapore flight than Singapore does. For example Newark to Singapore will be 111.5K Singapore miles versus 100K Alaska miles:
Effective 8/1, Singapore will also remove the ability to add a stopover on a one-way saver award for $100. One-way standard advantage awards and round-trip saver awards can still have a free stopover, but the stopover will be limited to 30 days.
Singapore Airlines is also devaluing their Star Alliance award chart.
When they did so in 2017 rates went up significantly. For example a first class flight on Star Alliance airlines between the US and Europe went up from 80K to 95K miles.
Just 16 months after that, they devalued their Star Alliance chart again. The cost of a first class flight on Star Alliance airlines between the US and Europe went up from 95K to 107.5K miles.
Effective 7/5, they will devalue their Star Alliance chart yet again. The cost of a first class saver award between JFK and Frankfurt will go from 107.5K miles to 121K miles.
Then again, with airlines like Delta and United that have ditched their award charts, at least Singapore continues to maintain them and have the courtesy to let us know about devaluations.
You can transfer miles from AMEX, Capital One, Chase, and Citi to Singapore at a 1:1 ratio.
Will you book any award travel before the devaluation?

at least they let us know before..
They let us know AND gave us a month’s head start. Not happy about the new rates, but can’t be mad when they roll it out in a customer-friendly way. I wish other airlines would take notice.
I booked a DPS-SIN flight this AM that I’ve been procrastinating to buy. The Amex transfer happened instantly – I seem to remember it taking about a day the last time I transferred. That was a nice surprise.
What about USA TLV in economy and business?
No reminder ouch
