Air Canada announced last month that they would introduce variable award pricing on United, Etihad, Calm Air, Canadian North, and PAL Airlines.
Air Canada said they would also eventually be able to access additional availability. For now at least, United is still not releasing all of their saver award space to Air Canada. Whether that will change down the line remains to be seen.
You can find Air Canada’s current award charts here.
Here’s what changed on sample routes for award flights this week that were booked yesterday versus today:
United:
- Newark-Cleveland: Was 6K, now 10K
- Newark-Chicago: Was 10K, now 15K
- Newark-Los Angeles: Was 12.5K, now 15K
- Newark-Honolulu: Was 22.5K, now 25K
- Newark-London: Was 35K coach, now 40K coach. Was 60K business, now 80K business.
- Newark-Sao Paulo: Was 40K coach, now 45K coach. Was 60K business, now 100K business.
- San Francisco-Sydney: Was 50K coach, now 55K coach. Was 75K business, now 100K business.
Canadian North:
- Cleveland-Resolute Bay: Was 12.5K coach, now 33.1K coach. Was 25K business, now 45K business.
Nearly all of those are at the top end of the guidance that Air Canada provided last month.
As I always say, keep your points with banks, so that your points won’t be devalued and you can make the best transfer when you’re ready to book travel.

Well pretty soon, flying TOR-NYC will be a domestic flight
Lol
Redeeming with chase pay yourself back @ 1.25 and using other currencies to fly is looking a lot more attractive.
But that has a cap
What’s the cap?
Biggest whamo is the Resolute Bay mileage fare increase. I’ll definitely have to cut down on my polar race trips and polar bear hunting expeditions. I’ll certainly miss enjoying those caribou steaks at the local Kosher steakhouse in the broad daylight at 3 am.
I have never seen a 75k United in Business to SYD/MEL on Air Canada. It’s usually 87.5k when the price is 100k on United.
Today, even when United had some 200k seats, they weren’t showing up properly on Air Canada at all.
Originating in SFO? Further cities would cost more than the sample.
UA doesn’t release all saver space to partners.
Last month I tried booking Air Canada rewards to Florida…kept getting an error message ..saying can’t book a flight that doesn’t originate in Canada….anyone else get that?
Work around?
You probably searched for a cash ticket, make sure to select book with miles
Resolute bay hurts. It was on my bucket list
