British Airways and Iberia devalued their Avios in July. Qatar devalued its Avios in August.

And now, Finnair has devalued its Avios, despite the program only joining Avios with a new award chart in March.

Finnair maintains a separate award chart for each partner airline. One nice thing about Finnair is that unlike other Avios programs, they don’t charge per segment flown.

Below is the new award chart, which only has 4 changes from the previous chart.

  • Continental US flights climb from 11K Avios in coach and 30K Avios in first class to 16.5K Avios in coach (up 50%!) and 40K Avios in first class (up 33.3%).
  • Flights between the US or Canada and Mexico or the Caribbean climb from 13K Avios to 15K Avios in coach.
  • Flights within South America climb from 13K Avios to 15K Avios in coach.

The award chart for travel on other airlines, such as Alaska, remains unchanged, so 11K domestic Avios awards are still available there:

Bizarrely though, flights within the continental US and Canada now cost more than flights between North America and Hawaii, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Flights between North America and Hawaii or Central America cost 15K Avios in coach or 38K Avios in business class.

Flights between North America and Mexico or the Caribbean cost 15K Avios in coach or 25K Avios in business class.

While flights within the US and Canada cost 16.5K Avios in coach or 40K Avios in domestic first class?

That sounded pretty insane to me, but I chatted with Finnair and the agent confirmed that was the case:

Go figure.

And take advantage of those Hawaii awards before they are devalued as well…

Finnair partner awards still must be booked over chat or phone call, they can’t be booked online. But hey, at least they’re still a good way to get AA benefits when booking tickets with BA Avios.

Avios rates will be lower when you factor in bonuses like the current 30% from Chase, but I never recommend transferring miles to airlines unless you’re ready to book something in the near-term. Keep miles with banks like AMEX, Capital One, Chase, or Citi and only transfer them over to airlines as needed. That way they won’t be devalued overnight.

Did you book any partner awards with Finnair Avios?

Do they calculate each segment separately like all other Avios programs?

30k business to Hawaii after bonus transfer is a solid deal. On what airline is that and what’s the best way to find availability? Tx Dan

It was just a matter of time. Looks like every loophole is getting closed in the air miles game.
