Update: This deal is now live! Southwest confirmed to me that you can earn this bonus on each Southwest card that you have!
Originally posted on 6/7:
Cardmembers will earn a whopping 50 Southwest points per dollar on up to $100 of Southwest flights, gift cards, in-flight purchases, points, and vacation packages.
That means if you buy a $100 eGift card you’ll earn 5,000 Southwest points! At a value of 1.55 cents per point, those points are worth some $77.50, making the effective cost of the gift card just $22.50!
You can make purchases on 6/11 between 12am-11:59pm ET.
As with all credit card points, the points earned from this promotion will count towards earning Companion Pass status.
The bonus points will take up to 8 weeks to post to your account.
- For a limited time you can also earn an increased signup bonus on Southwest cards:
- The Chase Southwest Consumer Priority card has a signup bonus of 65K Southwest points for spending $2,000 in 3 months.

Is it per SW card or per SW account?
I would guess per card, but I’ve asked Southwest for clarification.
What’s rule number 1 again???
Depends, is it a promotion or a mistake fare?
For promotions, PGFHGS.
For mistake fares, don’t call.
Looks like it is 50x on the first $100 only… first $100 spent on each card is my understanding.
That’s what the post says.
Sorry, I guess I misunderstood the post and initially thought you could buy multiple GCs (and if doing it in increments of up to $100, you get the most bang for your buck).
Nice deal. And 5,000 points could also be the difference getting a companion pass or not at the end of the year, so if you’re borderline each year it’s worth a shot on this one.
I have sw priority with $75 back on sw purchases. Does this mean I have to spend $175 for the max 50x?
Nope, $100 should double dip.
Please post a reminder on Friday if possible.
Thanks for letting us know. If I buy a $100 gift card, can I use the gift card to pay for the taxes on an award flight? And if so, what happens to the gift card funds if I cancel the award flight? Will the $5.60 from the gift card now have an expiration date? If I pay for the taxes with a credit card and cancel, I can have the $5.60 refunded to my credit card, but I don’t know what happens to the taxes if I pay them with a gift card. Thank you.
Yes. It should get refunded to the gift card.
as verified with WN, refund from a gc purch will be a TF that will expire 1 yr after booking
Can I buy points and still get 50 points per dollar spent?
Yes
So buying GC from southwest website works? It won’t get coded as a non southwest transaction?
Yes
Trying to do the math on buying points or gift cards. 3500 points costs $105. You would get 5000 points for the first $100 and 10 points for the $5. So should be a total of 3500+5000+10 = 8510 points. At the 1.55 cents per point, is a value of 131.9. That is a better deal, no?
For $100 you can get a $100 gift card and 5,000 points worth $77.50, so $177.50 total value or a gain of $77.50.
For $105 you can get 8,510 points worth $131.90 total value, or a gain of $26.90.
Thank you for filling in the missing piece for me.
SWA gift cards can be used to pay for flights and the $5.60 tax.
According to the SWA FAQ, “Please note that a Southwest Gift Card is not valid for the purchase of Southwest Airlines Vacation Packages, cargo, hotel, rental car, Southwest Airlines Merchandise, EarlyBird Check-In, additional Southwest Gift Cards, inflight purchases or Southwest Airlines group tickets.”
do we know if this is per card or per account?
No, but my assumption is per card.
Just heard back from them, it’s per card!
Do we need to register for the promotion before buying the gift card?
Nope.
I did it at 7:00 am EST it wasn’t live until 9:00??
Thanks for the follow-up and confirmation! That’s great news!!!!
Thanks as always Dan!!! It worked last night @12:04 am was able to swipe 3 cc on 2 different accounts
nah, all SWA CCs were closed last yr
Can a GC be added(redeemed) to an account right after purchase to be used later? Heard so many stories of people ending up with $0 on their GCs when they go to redeem because the funds had been stolen/used.
Hopefully once this is over the change fare difference waiver will come back. It’s overdue by about a week already.
So, it is already October – has anyone received the bonus SWA points yet? If yes, where do you see this, on the Chase SWA Visa statement or directly in your SWA.com account?
Not yet – hmmm
