Last week we broke the news about AMEX point transfers to Avianca Lifemiles and wrote about 9 awesome award redemption sweet spots.
Currently you can buy Avianca Lifemiles for as low as 1.375 cents each. This sale expires tomorrow at 11:59pm CST.
- If you buy up to 50K miles you’ll pay 1.535 cents/mile after 115% bonus miles are added.
- If you buy up 51K-100K miles you’ll pay 1.435 cents/mile after 130% bonus miles are added.
- If you buy up 101K-200K miles you’ll pay 1.375 cents/mile after 140% bonus miles are added.
A domestic one-way award ticket is 7.5K miles. Buying those miles for 1.375 cents each would cost $103.13 if you buy at least 101K miles.
A Lufthansa one-way first class award ticket to Madrid is 81,460 miles. Buying those miles for 1.375 cents each would cost $1,120 if you buy at least 101K miles.
Note that Lifemiles requires earning activity every 12 months in order to stop miles from expiring. Redeeming miles will not extend the life of your miles, though purchasing miles or transferring miles to LifeMiles will extend their validity.

does buying part of the miles required for an award flight count as “buying miles” and reset the clock for expiration?
using amex platinum will get you 5 points so lowering the rate to about 1.28 is you value amex at 1.35
You don’t get 5 points on the platinum, because it doesn’t code as airline tickets, but you will get 3 points on the CSR and Citi Prestige
