Marriott awards 5 suite night awards (SNAs) as a choice benefit after hitting 50 and 75 Marriott nights in a calendar year, or after spending $60K on a Marriott Brilliant card. Top tier United elites can also earn them via this cross-promotion.
I have tried to use them many times, to no avail. While Hyatt’s suite upgrade are confirmable at the time of booking as long as a standard suite is for sale, Marriott’s suite nights only confirmed 5 days before the stay and typically were returned as unconfirmed.
SNAs have now been rebranded as night upgrade awards (NUAs). Effective today, they can also be used at The Ritz-Carlton, EDITION, Aloft, Element, and Protea Hotels, brands that were blacked out previously.
Marriott says that 20% more rooms are available in the upgrade pool, consisting of more premium rooms that aren’t suites, such as oceanfront rooms or rooms with balconies. It’s clear that Marriott is trying to reframe this benefit away from being a suite upgrade, as it consistently was in the SPG days.

Unfortunately with this being Marriott after all, it comes with a major downgrade as well. Upgrades will now only be eligible to be confirmed a mere 3 days before the stay. They can be confirmed up until 2pm, the day before arrival.

At least now the acronym makes sense, Not Usable Awards.

does the hotel confirm the suites or Marriot cooperate, and is it a manual process? I can see that you can add many level of room type for the upgrade- when they try to approve it, does it go via what they want- or do they try to give you the best avaliable one? thanks!!
I suspect it’s the hotel’s decision depending on the availability and their “projection” of sales in those room types.
that is what I thought, but i once called one of the locations- and they told me they have no access to it, as it is done via cooperate– not sure if that was a cover up.. i usually see them confirmed at like 4am- so wondering maybe it is an automated system.. I have had luck in the past with lower properties (not in heavily vacationed spots)..
