The Bahamas Are Closing Their Borders To US Tourists Again

The Bahamas reopened their borders to tourists on July 1st.

Their protocols never made much sense. If you were 10 years or older, you had to show a negative COVID-19 test results from the past 10 days.

Countries are in a catch-22 with requiring test results.

Some require test results from the past 3 days, but people may not be able to get their results in time.

On the other hand, what exactly do 10 day old results prove?

If you didn’t have COVID-19 10 days ago, you could have easily caught it since then. And if you did have it then, you’re hopefully getting over it 10 days later…so what’s the point?

But with cases in the Bahamas rising since the reopening, the country is closing their borders to US tourists once again as of this Wednesday. Tourists from other countries are still allowed.

If you’re there now, you’ll want to get a flight back before flights between the US and the Bahamas end.

The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, which we stayed it in the era before COVID-19, didn’t reopen and will remain closed until at least October.

Perhaps it’s a good time to stick to domestic travel if you have an itch to go on vacation unless you’re OK being stranded somewhere when the rules change…

Of course, the US rules change, too! The NY, NJ and CT rules are probably the dumbest, and change every week. It takes almost nothing to be banned, as Delaware (which does not have a serious COVID problem) found out the other week when they just ran “too many” tests. (They did fewer tests last week and got un-banned). The good news is that if a wacky governor decides to change the rules, it probably won’t be enforced. I wouldn’t want to have to argue with a foreign customs officer!

I say good riddance, the Bahamas is just a tourist trap of a country. They are al trying to take advantage of tourists.

We need reliable rapid tests (30-60 minute tests).

Imagine if before every flight, you do the rapid test in the airport at check in. If the results come back negative, you are cleared to board. For international arrivals, a 2nd test could be conducted at point of arrival.
