Originally posted on 3/7:

United continues to add to its commanding lead with an impressive global route network.

United teased the new destinations yesterday, and Morroco was a popular guess due to the Indiana Jones theme:

And indeed, the airline announced today that it will fly 3 times a week between Newark and Marrakesh on its premium 767-300ER. That plane features a whopping 46 Polaris seats, 22 Premium seats, 43 Economy Plus seats, and just 56 Economy Minus seats.

That service will begin October 24th and I can’t wait to try it out! Morocco has been on my bucket list since reading this DDF Trip Report.Ā You canĀ find the DDF Master Thread on Morocco here.

The airline is also adding a rare fifth freedom route, where an airline sells tickets between 2 destinations that aren’t in its home market. It will operate daily nonstop 737-800 service between Tokyo/NRT and Cebu, Philippines starting 7/31.

I don’t think anyone saw that coming!

Delta and United used to have many intra-Asia connections available from cities like Tokyo and Hong Kong, but those were phased out over the years.

Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines already fly between Tokyo/NRT-Cebu, but United now flies 5 737s daily between its Guam hub and Tokyo/NRT and must want to utilize more of those aircraft while they’re waiting for scheduled flights. United will also begin flying between its Guam hub and Tokyo/HND with daily service beginning 5/1.

United also flies between San Francisco-Manila, Guam-Manila, and one of my favorite oddball flights in United’s network, Palau-Manila. But for someone flying from the east coast, you can now fly to Cebu via Tokyo/NRT, which United serves from Newark, Houston, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

In 2015 I flew the United Island Hopper from Honolulu-Majuro-Kwajalein-Kosrae-Pohnpei-Chuuk-Guam-Palau-Guam-Tokyo before flying home in ANA First Class on a mileage ticket bargain. Now you can continue the fun onto Cebu. Or fly from breathtaking Palau to Manila and then from Cebu to Tokyo on United.

I’ve long wanted to visit Palawan, Philippines, and have been able to book several United Polaris saver awards between San Francisco and Manila, though life events keep getting in the way of that bucket list destination. Too many places to go and too little time to make them all work!

United also announced daily nonstop 737 service between Houston and Medellin, Colombia beginning 10/27, the airline’s 2nd destination in Colombia.

United also announced expanded service between Los Angeles-Shanghai, Los Angeles-Hong Kong, San Francisco-Seoul, and Newark-Porto.

Will you fly on any of United’s new routes?

I was in Morocco a few years ago and found it beautiful and the people friendly to me when wearing tallis to shul in Fez on Shabbas. Do you think it will still be thst friendly?

Morroco is amazing and Marrakesh has a family that keeps the oldest shul alive. Definitely worth a visit. Kosher food is tricky, one day we paid a guy to throw wood in his stone oven and got Bread that was fresh from the oven and Pas Yisroel!

Sillypainter

Was in RAK last year. Loved it. I wouldn’t however travel this time until things settle in Israel.

Nobody is in love with United more than you – but seems like an odd choice for them

Why a plane so heavy on j for marrakesh?

GUWonder

Perhaps they are expecting luxury-heavy/premium cabin-heavy tour groups and high-end small group travel to load up the front cabins and it just happens to be the equipment UA has available that it thinks best matches the demand and route length for turns with equipment availability.

I donā€™t know how sustainable this route will be. Non-VFR travel demand can be very fickle and get spooked when it comes to destinations in such countries.

GUWonder

Based on whom they expect to travel there and on maximizing the use of the available equipment with turnaround times included?

Personally, I expect this kind of route to be rather vulnerable to the fickleness of non-VFR leisure travel demand in such regions, and so I wouldnā€™t be certain of its longer term viability for UA.

I so want to go to the Philippines but not traveling with four sets of tefillin. Every decent priced flight to Japan either stops in Doha or Istanbul so thatā€™s out also. Sigh

Any idea when the flights to Marrakesh will go on sale?

cb

would love to see your 47 trip wishlist, can you post on ddf? pleease??

This move might be related to Moroccoā€™s budding aircraft MRO industry.

hmm i can understand why there are so few mileage tickets available. Maybe the airlines should go back to the old system. Very inconsiderate. Disappointing.
