Which should you get?
- If you just care about the 2 free bags and don’t care about Club access, the Quest card is a great choice.
- If you want Club access and don’t plan on spending on the card, you’ll probably want the United Club Consumer Card.
- If you want Club access and plan on spending on the card or going for elite status via spending, you’ll probably want the United Club Business Card.
If you have a grandfathered Presidential Plus card, you still have the cheapest Club access at $600 per year, though without any of the benefits of the other Club cards. You may want to consider changing to a Club card product if you value any of the new perks or want to earn elite status, or may want to stick with the card if you just want the lowest cost Club access.
If you have a United Business or Business Club card, you may also want to get the United Gateway℠ Card. You can also downgrade a United consumer card to that card after having one for 12 months. That card has no annual fee and is losing its main benefit of discounted award tickets and expanded saver award availability, but it will still trigger 5,000 annual bonus miles for having that card and a United business card.

Love this style of comparison! Thanks Dan!
Glad you enjoyed.
Thank you Dan! Why would anyone keep the explorer over the business card though…
Inertia.
If you have an Explorer, downgrade it to a Gateway and apply for a United Business. That way you get a 5K annual mileage bonus for having a consumer+business card.
Thanks!! That’s what I’ll do! As a side note, what Chase card do you suggest doing daily spending on? Assuming u have the United, sapphire, and freedom. Are there any 2x points with regular spending?
I have the United Business credit card. I see you write that you get free carry-on for you and your companion, even on a basic economy tickets can you Please post a link because they want to charge me not flying tomorrow. Thanks
Are you the primary cardholder?
Did you pay for the tickets with that card?
Is your mileage number on your ticket?
Benefit details:
https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/travel/inflight/basic-economy.html
No I didn’t pay with the card for the ticket because when I bought the tickets I didn’t have that credit card but it is within the 90 days of having the credit card. Yes, my mileage number is on the ticket
This benefit is only if you pay on the card, but try calling United or showing an airport rep the link and see what they say.
if you are within 90 days of opening the card you should be getting a free standard checked bag and it should work automatically
Dan, thanks for your always informative credit card posts. I have the United Business Card and I’m not seeing the free Global Entry/PreCheck/NEXUS benefit online in my account…
The information I was given from Chase/United for the refresh is that Business and Business Club now have a Global Entry/PreCheck/NEXUS benefit.
If you don’t get credited, you can let me know and I’ll chase that down further.
Thanks, incredibly helpful . .
I currently have the Quest and I do 100k of spending on it per year. Based on the above, I will probably downgrade to consumer gateway, and open the Business Explorer card. I am currently premier silver, the business card will net me 4,000 pqp, and my flying will easily take care of the rest. The only useful benefit I lose is the 2nd bag, however I almost never check 2 bags. Am I missing anything?

Nicely laid out for us. Thanks
Pleasure, thanks!
Spouse has the Explorer, I was thinking to downgrade his and apply for the business for me. Can they be linked to still earn the bonus?
No
Premier check in is a big plus for me. Is my only option the club card?
Yes
Great review!!
Thanks!
Dan, do you know if the gateway card gives you access to lower mileage award tickets as a chase card member when searching for flights? I tried calling both united and chase a few times and the reps didn’t know. That’s the main reason I keep the Explorer card but would downgrade if it gave me that perk.

ok thanks, missed that, very helpful!
The United Site for booking is way too expensive with points, while Chase is much less. Is it possible to buy a United ticket with a stopover on Chase with the Quest card and still get 2 suitcases?
