-There are several huge advantages that business cards have over consumer cards as you can read here.  You may already have a business that needs a card to keep track of expenses. For example if your name is Joe Smith and you sell items online, or if you have any other side business and want a credit card to better keep track of business expenditures you can just open a business credit card for “Joe Smith Sole Proprietorship” as the business name. You don’t need to file any messy government paperwork to be allowed to do that.
Just be sure to select “Sole Proprietorship” as the business type and just use your social security number in the Tax Identification Number field as well as in the social security number field.

AMEX business cards don’t report your spending on your personal credit report. On personal cards if you spend money on your card your credit score will be hurt even if you pay your bill on time. A whopping 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization. You can pay off your card before your statement is generated to avoid that, but that takes effort and laying out money well before you have to. Additionally it’s good to have the statement close with a few dollars to show the card is active and being paid every month.

On a business card it’s just not reported, so you can wait until the money is due without it having a negative effect on your score. Plus if you close a business card it won’t ever have an effect on your score.

———————————————————————————————————–

All 4 Delta cards:

-Offer a free checked bag for the primary cardholder and up to 8 companions on the same reservation.
-Have no foreign transaction fees.
-Offer Zone 1 Priority Boarding on Delta flights for the primary cardholder and up to 8 companions on the same reservation so that you won’t have to gate-check your carry-ons.
-Offer 2 Delta miles per dollar on flight purchases from Delta.
-Offer a 20% savings in the form of a statement credit on eligible pre-purchased meals, in-flight purchases of food,alcoholic beverages and audio headsets, and movies, shows and video games accessed via Delta’s seatback in-flight entertainment system, on Delta-operated flights.
-Waive the Medallion Qualification Dollar requirement to reach Medallion status if you spend $25,000 on the cards in that calendar year. Eligible Purchases will be combined across multiple Delta cards of the primary cardholder if those accounts are linked to the same SkyMiles number.
-Offer $29 per person discounted SkyClub lounge access for the cardmember and up to 2 guests.
-Offer return protection that allows you to return items to AMEX for a full refund when a store won’t take an item back within 90 days of the date of purchase, up to $300 per item and $1,000 per card per calendar year. If AMEX requests that the item be returned they will provide a free shipping label, though in most people’s experience you don’t typically have to actually send the item back for a refund.
-Offer AMEX protections like purchase protection, extended warranty, dispute resolution, CDW car rental insurance, and more.
-Offer free Shoprunner membership.
-Offer free additional cardholders (up to 99 per account). Additional cardholders are each eligible for American promotions like Small Business Saturday, Twitter offers, etc.

Delta’s miles aren’t my favorite, but they do have limited uses.  They started allowing one-way award redemptions, and the online award flexible calendar is a big improvement over the previous calendar.

They got rid of their award charts, though I saved screenshots of them here.

The best use of their miles is an aspirational one, a 160K round-trip lie-flat business class award to Australia on Virgin America, one of the easier business class award that you can snag when heading down under.

If you actually want to collect Delta miles you’ll do better spending on the  Starwood Consumer AMEX or the Starwood Business AMEX as 20,000 Starpoints transfers into 25,000 miles on dozens of airlines, including Delta or Delta partners like Air France and Alaska.

Or you can earn 1.5 miles per dollar (transferable to Delta) everywhere by making 30 transactions per month with The Amex EveryDay Preferred Credit Card from American Express. Purchases like gas, Uber, and groceries will earn 3 or 4.5 miles per dollar.

The Amex EveryDay Credit Card from American Express has no annual fee and earns 1.2 miles per dollar (transferable to Delta) by making 20 transactions per month. Purchases like gas, Uber, and groceries will earn 2.4 or 3 miles per dollar.

The exception to that is for purchases on Delta which earn double miles and for purchases on the Platinum Delta card if you can hit the $25K or $50K spend threshold bonuses.

Additionally if you are gunning for Delta medallion status then spending $25,000 on Delta cards in a year will waive the requirement to spend a minimum amount on Delta flights to earn that status ($3,000 for Silver, $6,000 for Gold, $9,000 for Platinum, and $15,000 for Diamond if you don’t spend $25K in a year across all of your Delta cards).

But the cards are great for the signup bonus and benefits that they come with for both Delta Medallions and non-Medallions alike.

esty

simon

Thanks Dan. In your professional opinion which card is the best one to grab (If your only taking one). Is it smart to get 2 or 3?

And is there an issue of loosing points due to having received a bonus through AMEX in the past?

OG

@Dan- I have decent credit, but not the best. Some cards I apply for I get, some I don’t. which of these chance would I have the best chance of getting?

Moshe

Can I get the personal gold delta card if I already have the Gold business delta?
Thanks Dan

JJJ

abraham

Anonymous

Can u review the lifetime signup rules
Do if you had the reg personal card you can’t get bonus and business you need to wait the full twelve months from closing

Dan

@Shmuly92:
Sure, http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/53213

Serve card would be a good way if you don’t want to bother with gift cards.

@esty:
It should, YMMV.
I’ve been able to get it corrected if it doesn’t…

@simon:
Only a risk if you had the exact same consumer card in the past.

@Moshe:
Yes.

@JJJ:
Yes, all 3 cards are unique products, so you can get the bonus for all 3.

@abraham:
Yes.

@Anonymous:
Correct.

abraham

Thanks, Dan! And it is it automatically a year? Even if I’m not getting any warranty from the original seller at all?

Delta Flyer

I just received the Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card with an offer for 30,000 bonus miles for spending $1000 – literally last Friday. Will I get 50,000 points automatically if I spend $2,000? Or do I need to call them?

Dan

@abraham:
No, the warranty is only double whatever the manufacturer warranty is.
Though you do have 90 days of purchase protection.

@Delta Flyer:
Unfortunately AMEX doesn’t match offers.
It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get the new offer, but it’s worth a shot.

So it looks like if I have had the consumer gold card in the past, I can now only sign up for the consumer platinum card if I do not want a business card, correct?
Also, if I do not have plans to make a Delta purchase in the first 3 months, can I just buy a delta gift card for future use to get the $100 statement credit?

sun365

@Dan:

>>Yes, all 3 cards are unique products, so you can get the bonus for all 3.

Which one of the four is not unique ?

Dan

@sun365:
They added a 4th card to the promo, all 4 are unique.

tjp74

will MQM from both personal and business platinum combine and count toward elite qualification? I can put $50000 on one and $25000 on other and get 50k MQM looks like which will get me Deta gold?

Jeff

Why are the same bloggers who trash Skypesos, recommending these cards like its the best thing since sliced bread ?

Dan

@tjp74:
Yes.

@Jeff:
Did you read The post?
I’m not a skypesos fan.

That doesn’t mean it’s not worth taking up to 220K miles of low hanging fruit.

Matt

I applied for the Delta Business Gold on Sunday and was approved. Yay right? Well, I messed up and found out that I had cancelled my old Delta Business Gold back in 08/2014…so there goes that bonus (hadn’t been 12 months). Called Amex and tried to convert it to the Delta Business Platinum, but the rep said no go. Ugh, wasted pull…lesson learned the hard way I guess!

Anonymous

@Dan: I didn’t read the post thoroughly because I’ve been trying to get rid of my skypesos and my question was more general, and not only referring to you. I just didn’t know what I was missing. Now I got it, but if that’s the best reason there is, aren’t there better Amex cards to apply and use credit pulls for ?

chana

If you sign up for a card and then are not able to meet the sign up bonus requirements in time, can you still get the sign up bonus another time you get the card? (Since the new rules of not being able to get the sign-up bonus more than once). thanks,

Anonymous

@Jeff@Jeff:

For those of us who has pretty much everything… just got Citi Prestige for both me and my wife. jumped on Hyatt with $50 statement credit, IHG with statement credit and increased offer, Alaska with statement credit, also increased offer, this is a great opportunity to pick up 20K additional skypesos and 5000 more MQM initially if you get the platinum. I was planning to go for the Silver status but I just applied for the business (pending review) and go for the gold status.

Dave H

Last time I had Delta Amex gold card, I closed account back in December 2012. Am I eligible for this new personal card? I already got approved for the business card today.

If I am, then I can open up personal card as well right now and do the same for 2 more family members? so total, 6 Delta CC? hoping all the rest 5 get approved.

thanks

Anonymous

Does no fee delta get amex offers?
Downgrade!

Miles

Dan, I just applied for the Business Gold and Business Platinum.
For some reason when I tried to click to submit the platinum application nothing happened, so I had to reenter the information and there ended up being a couple minutes of delay between the submission of the gold and platinum applications. Then it said the application was under review. After a quick call the platinum was approved, but does that mean that my credit report received 2 pulls?

Thanks for your insight, and enjoy the referral bonus!

Miles

Dan

@Anonymous:
Collect them all 😀

@chana:
You should be able to.

@Dave H:
No, but you can get the platinum delta card.

@Miles:
Should be 1 pull.

barry

I didnt see a response above to the following, any ez way to make a delta purchase without having to purchase a delta flight or the like

Chana

Hi Dan, new to your site or Amex cc shopping. I have Costco Amex which will be closed off next year. Which Amex card is best to open up. Thank you

sol

bs”d
Also want to know if i get a $50 gift card on Delta site will that count as a Delta purchase and my AMEX Delta Gold will be credited the $50??(or any other way to get the $50 without flying)

thanks

DDF

$50 Delta gift card will work, as will PGGM.

Miles

If getting multiple delta Amex cards and therefore buying multiple gift cards (one per Amex) can I combine the gift cards when I actually purchase a ticket on delta, or is there a need to combine th gift cards somehow.

Dave H

By the way… some info for the community.

Apparently Delta does not allow multiple card applications within 4 days or something. When I applied for Personal card it got approved and then business card made me call them. What they said is that, business card WILL get approved, just not now ..in 4 days. When I asked about the expiring offer, agent assured me that it goes by when application was submitted, so even though there is a delay in approval of the app, the bonus will still apply.

A

Is it true that AMEX enforces the 4 cards at one time limit?

David

For some reason my freinds telling me that Amex would make 2 pulls if you apply for the personal an busniess on MBM,it would only work 1 pull if it’s a charge card ,an a credit card . However you mentioned before that you would be able to correct it into 1 pull , would you mind to share how ?

josh

What’s the number to amex reconsideration

sam

whats the# to try to get approved oveer the phone it says my application is pending after applying online

Zvi

Trying to apply, but AMEX keeps saying systems are down. I hope they get it working before the offer deadline in 30 minutes!

sol

bs”d

@DDF whats PGGM ??
thanks

Bruce

Has anyone received the credit after purchasing a gift card? Can it be an egift card? The delta customer service rep said gift cards would not work.

love dans

@Bruce
