President Trump announced tonight that he and the first lady have tested positive for COVID-19:
Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 2, 2020
COVID-19 is no joke, especially for those who are older. President Trump was the oldest person ever to assume the Presidency.
Praying for the health and wellbeing of everyone affected by this horrible virus. Please remember to wear a mask and use social distancing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
How do you think this will affect the election on November 3rd? Will we see a first ever Presidential zoom debate?

Biden camp purposely infected trump team at the debate
Takes a little more time than that to test positive for Covid. Feel free to educate yourself before spreading your misinformation.
It appears you are unable to properly process sarcasm
Takes 48 hrs which it’s been. Educate yourself
Hope hicks had it on Wednesday which was less than 24 hours.
Exactly that means it wasnt from hope hicks
I know that my reaction is so mean but this text at 1:26 AM (EST) gave me a slight giggle.
Wishing The POTUS a speedy recovery.
Hope he is feeling well after 14 days and is ready for the second debate.
Regardless, this certainly changes the dynamic of the election.
was all preventable…so sad…
Is he going to inject bleach, or sunlight?
Epic lol!
Masks don’t work. Keep politics off of DD please
We also tell readers to put babies in car seats, although I’m sure car seats don’t work either and are political?
It’s so sad what has become politicized in the face of a crisis.
thank you for this comment, JJ. Joshua, if i sneeze, and you are wearing a mask, do you get as wet?
Sneeze in your elbow, nothing new…
Thank you, AG, for your ignorant comment. If you sneeze and are wearing a mask, others are protected. Grow up.
Iv’e never seen anyone sneezing in a mask, when they sneeze or cough people remove their masks.
Well said !
Wearing a mask is not about politics, it’s about following sound doctors advice based on the best scientific knowledge.
Only scientific knowledge is info that show mask do not prevent spreading of a virus (but the cdc pulled that study from their website recently….)
So now you’re claiming it’s part of a secret comparison by evil people who want you to wear masks?
Be a mench wear a mask, even if you know better than the experts.
CDC has long said we should wear masks. Scientific consensus and doctors advices is to wear a mask. I’m sure you’re think you are smarter than the medical experts and more adapt at reading the papers they publish but the experts in our community say wearing a mask can help save lives.
Masks also make others feel more comfortable considering how our community has seen jumps in Covid cases. Be a mench wear a mask.
Condoms or birth control don’t work .01% of the time, but work the other 99.99% of the time. What’s political about masks? Even if it saves one person, isn’t that enough?
Wrong analogy for this crowd, who don’t use either 🙂
Maybe suggest wearing a sheet with a hole in it!
No it’s not. By that measure we should ban cars which causes 1.35 million deaths per year globally. Every modern convenience cost lives.
Driving is not a convenience. If everyone in the world stopped using cars today, many more than 1.35 million people would die in the next year. There is nothing logical about this point.
You’re probably right. But I think even you’ll agree that the above comment isn’t correct. To enact a policy to avoid one death is absurd. So let’s shut amusement parks. Our grandparents were just fine without it.
Your comment is not logical, Logoc! You’re saying that all these years, doctors have been wearing a mask, and washing hands while dealing with patients, for no logical reason? Is it a big deal to wear a mask, in areas with a high infectious rate? Don’t think it’s saving just one life
Hopefully he got close enough to give it to Biden too that way they can both recover together in harmony
That is an awful thing to say
@alyssa interesting that you didn’t think the other nasty comments on trump were an awful thing to say.
How do you know that, @Yiddel? Have you got some mind-reading powers? Does have a person have to say everything on their mind to everyone to avoid your criticism? (Grow up)
Actually, those comments were totally justified!!
I’m building a chain link fence to keep mosquitoes off my lawn. #MASKSDON’TWORK
That’s such a dumb thing to say. Good night
Good morning Natata. Nice to know logic prevails for some. Thanks
Ironically, masks are the one scientifically proven tool we have that can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and prevent more lockdowns, but people still fight against them.
This isn’t politics, it’s about keeping our businesses, schools, and shuls open and saving lives at a very low cost.
Bravo! I think people not wanting to wear masks stems from a lack of maturity to do what is right, even though it’s uncomfortable.
Not a lack of maturity. It’s very uncomfortable for some people. I personally get headaches when I wear a mask for more than a half hour.
And yet doctors wear them for hours on end…
Get a better mask?
Most likely, doctors are far more used to this, they’re probably not even aware that it’s there most of the time. Same way they have no shame with coming to mincha in pajamas (this is not an attack, just an observation). It’s their professional uniform, so it’s just there, no thought to it. (Also, how many doctors do you know that are asthmatic or something similar? I have personal experience with how such a person needs as much air as possible when the symptoms are aggravated if they don’t want it to turn into a full blown attack.)
Therefore, I think comparing doctors to wearing masks and everyone else wearing masks is just wrong. Although I do agree that there are ways to get more comfortable, so it shouldn’t be used as an excuse.
You can also get used to it. It is part of working, some people don’t work.
I personally know at least 4 paramedics that came down with Carbon Monoxide toxicity while wearing masks all day in the ambulance. That is way more dangerous than the SARS 2 virus. Stop acting like masks are the best answer for every situation.
Even when everyone is wearing a mask you are still likely to get the SARS 2 virus if you are near an infected person. People need to be able to choose the best preventive for their personal situation. Government is definitely not one size fits all.
[Citation needed]
Also, better warn Doctors to stop wearing masks all day…
somebody needs to check the ambulance exhaust system or stop running the motor indoors. masks of this type do not stop fumes.
Doctors wear masks to prevent the spread of BACTERIA not Viruses only N95 works for viruses and I personally cant breath in one so its basically pointless to wear the other kind
funny cuz i know lots of people that always wore masks but still got it. but i guess we cant argue with science can we
Really, do we still need to explain this?
https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/gaj2a3/wear_your_mask_the_urine_test/
Study after study has shown that masks help prevent spread. But one person wearing a mask won’t stop them from catching it if others aren’t.
Do you prefer another lockdown to wearing a mask?
Sorry but this is not a study….

Just like you should build a fence around your roof to help prevent an accidental death, please wear a mask. Yes, a short fence will not guarantee everyone’s safety but it helps. So too masks and social distancing helps.
We are a religion of rational people, follow the overwhelming medical consensus. Please don’t dogmatically cling to an opposition to masks with a religious zeal. We already have a religion and it tells us to protect ourselves and others.
Dan, you have always been a big proponent of masks even when it was against the “science” back in March and April when the CDC and Fauci were saying not to wear mask. (And I was rooting for you, it seemed very reasonable even at the time to wear one).
But you can’t blame people for not following the “science” now that it happens to confirm your priors and not theirs. You would do the same thing (and did) if the “science” was the other way around.
We can hardly blame people for not trusting the powers that be at this point. We can have a civil debate about how to best handle this crisis but the preaching and the shaming is not helping the cause.
What makes matters worse is that there are now people convinced that the whole pandemic could’ve been avoided if we only we were better about masks (see some other comments in this thread). That is pure lunacy which hurts the pro-mask cause as it turns sensible people off. I hope at least you will agree will that.
Thanks for all you do!
“But you can’t blame people for not following the “science” now that it happens to confirm your priors and not theirs.”
No one is being blamed for not wearing masks before there was a consensus in the scientific and medical community…
None of those sources are actual clinical trials. The Mayo article even says that no surgical mask has been approved by the fda for coronavirus protection.
Control based clinical trials are the gold standard. Nobody has done a trial yet that shows masks do anything with regards to coronaviruses. That is why there are so many arguments in the medical community.
Lockdowns don’t work either.
https://t.co/rO9LbXJY9t?amp=1
One major flaw with the push to wear masks is that many of those wearing them and yelling at people who don’t are actually not wearing theirs correctly. N95 masks are supposed to be fit test. The vast majority out there are not. I had someone tell me from ten feet away that I was standing too close to him without a mask. Ironically he was wearing a mask with a one way valve on it, protecting himself but nobody around him.
Masks and proper hygiene can certainly decrease transmission, but given that we’re not completely destroying the virus the risk is always there. People are getting sick in a second wave because they were locked up and missed the first wave.
But don’t fool yourself into thinking that masks will prevent lockdowns. Lockdowns are political, and just serve to delay the exposure.
What political benefit is there for the current lockdown in Israel?
They’re locked down because their hospitals are full. Wearing masks are one of the few tools we have to slow the spread so it doesn’t get to that point. It’s certainly not a cure, but it helps.
Israel hospitals are not full. That’s complete BS. Google it.

Eli, so Israel is on it’s second lockdown because they think it is fun? Lets have a fact based conversation.
Israel wants to show the world how advanced they are. There is a lot of hubris involved in their decisions. They were so excited to show the world that they were covid free a couple of months ago.
There is definitely politics at play as well.
The only thing that is guaranteed to work is a complete lockdown with everyone staying home.
I’m not sure what the political benefit might be. However thelockdown exist only in politics, I live in Israel and I still havn’t seen any sign of a lockdown.
It’s not a low cost. Many people find the masks suffocating and get headaches from inhaling carbon dioxide. I can’t stand when people fight with non mask wearers.
Suffocating?
And yet doctors wear them for hours on end…
Get a more comfortable mask? Get a mask bracket? There are countless options.
How is this different than my 2 year old saying she doesn’t want to wear clothes today?
There’s a logical case to be made that younger people shouldn’t need to be uncomfortable to protect older vulnerable people taking risks by going to public places. Do you also support lowering highway speed limits to 40 mph to protect the older drivers with slower reflexes from getting into a car accident?
If grandma wants to drive, it’s a risk she’s taking and others shouldn’t be inconvenienced to protect her.
Do me a favor.
Tell that to your bubby and let me know what she says.
I’ll wait.
That’s not a logical response. Please explain to me the difference. Lowering the highway speed limit to 40mph will no doubt save thousands of lives a year. Do we have a moral obligation to do so?
Like I said, I’ll wait.
It’s easy to post anonymous comments, have a fun argument, etc, when people don’t know who you are.
But most people wouldn’t even consider saying something like that to their bubby.
I think that says it all. But hey, if you would tell your bubby you don’t care to be bothered to wear a mask to protect her, kuddos to you for being a straight shooter.
Deaths from all US car accidents in 12 months=35K. Of which a massive amount are due to alcohol/drugs and not speeding.
Deaths in US from COVID in 7 months=Between 208K (confirmed)-270K (including excess deaths since March 2020).
Also, when is the last time car accidents caused exponential growth and lockdowns?
Masks are a very low cost/high benefit option.
Just to throw in another take. I think masks are proven to be very effective and while most find them uncomfortable it is usually still low costs \ high benefit.
its good to keep in mind there is a minority of people that the mask is more difficult or harmful for. I have fainted from a mask and do have a condition with breathing issues and I now have a medical mask exemption. I still believe masks is safest way and important and its on people like me who can’t wear masks to be responsible and not risk others. I stay away from crowds. I go to public places only for very short times when mask won’t harm me. And at work I’ve had to arrange to be more isolated and use less effective things like face shields when needing to be around ppl to work out these issues.
We should be responsible even if mask is difficult and also be sensitive if mask is only mildly uncomfortable that for some it’s more extreme and a much greater sacrifice.
Yes, well stated. At some point the crushing economic costs of this virus will make the carelessness and heedlessness of those resisting wearing masks, social distancing, and other virus control measures, unbearable. Not wearing a mask should be seen as being unacceptable as dui or even second hand smoke has become. It is really much worse, it is mindless too given the info available.
I don’t want to get personal. I have alot of hakaras hatov for all the amazing work you do. I feel like you’re using passion and not logic. Sure I would drive slow if I were right next to my own bubby. And sure I would use a mask when I’m visiting my bubby. I’m just questioning the moral obligation to keep the vulnerable people who venture out in public safe. And I don’t see any logical difference between masks my driving analogy. Forget speed limits. Why don’t we ban cars altogether to save close to 100,000 people a year who die in car accidents??
No logical difference? Lol, ok.
————–
Lets start with this:
“The 2016 national data shows that:
Distraction-related deaths (3,450 fatalities) decreased by 2.2 percent;
Drowsy-driving deaths (803 fatalities) decreased by 3.5 percent;
Drunk-driving deaths (10,497 fatalities) increased by 1.7 percent;
Speeding-related deaths (10,111 fatalities) increased by 4.0 percent;
Unbelted deaths (10,428 fatalities) increased by 4.6 percent;
Motorcyclist deaths (5,286 fatalities – the largest number of motorcyclist fatalities since 2008) increased by 5.1 percent;
Pedestrian deaths (5,987 fatalities – the highest number since 1990) increased by 9.0 percent; and
Bicyclist deaths (840 fatalities – the highest number since 1991) increased by 1.3 percent.”
Where exactly did you get 100k from?
—————–
The fact that we have speed limits is itself the proof you agree masks are a good idea. Both are limitations
To say no masks should be required is saying there should be NO speed limits.
Do you have any idea how many millions of dollars and countless hours of research has gone into picking the exact speed limits for a given area?
—————–
To quote yuneeq on DDF:
“35,000 deaths a year for cars is nothing compared to 200k+ in 7 months with most of that time spent trying to get it under control. Imagine people only used cars to go to grocery stores and still managed to kill 350k people annually, 10x your number. What would the death rate in cars be if people drove everywhere – likely over a million. Is that a number which will make you consider the risk of driving? Or do we accept any risk no matter how high because that’s life. 35k deaths for the flu is a made up number. The confirmed death rate is 3-15k annually, which is why you rarely heard of people dying from the flu but you know more that died from COVID in a single week.”
Well said! I understand your point to be that there deserves to be more sacrifice for covid because it’s deadlier. The question is, where do you draw the line?
And how about my point of banning cars with does kill 1.35 million people a year globally?https://www.cdc.gov/injury/features/global-road-safety/index.html#:~:text=Each%20year%2C%201.35%20million%20people,on%20roadways%20around%20the%20world.&text=Every%20day%2C%20almost%203%2C700%20people,pedestrians%2C%20motorcyclists%2C%20and%20cyclists.
I’m guessing that your response will be that a mask is much less of an inconvenience than not driving. The philosophical question then should be how do we set the moral obligation for inconvenience per lives saved? I don’t think anyone can answer that.
Logoc, find the studies saying people are dying from wearing mask because it is not hard to see over 200k Americans have died from Covid. Dan already pointed out Doctors wear them for hours on end. Stop hiding behind an analogy or trying to modify the analogy when Covid keeps killing people. Help to slow the spread and save lives.
Slowing doesn’t mean eliminating. Just kicking the bucket down the road.
FYI – my bubbe told me she survived Mengele she can survive a virus. Just my personal anecdote regarding the asking the bubbe comment. BH she got better after 2 weeks. Was on hydroxy – should add her case to the studies. 92 years young.
Thank you Hashem.
Over 200 thousand people have died in the USA alone. Steve, it sounds like you are saying those deaths are good because we otherwise we are just “Just kicking the bucket down the road.”
How about we limit the the number of people who get sick by wearing mask and work on a vaccine.
Every time you delay this sickness you have a chance of better treatment modalities with far better outcome. The future will likely have a vaccine.
No I am not hiding behind an analogy. I have made a strong philosophical argument as to why it perhaps shouldn’t be viewed as a moral obligation to restrict your rights to spare lives. Every norm in today’s society has a cost in lives like flying an airplane etc. I point out that we still drive cars despite the cost of 1.35 million lives globally each year. Yes there are definitely different levels of discomfort and restricting cars isn’t as drastic as requiring masks. The question just is where do you draw the line. If society has to always take cost of lives into account, why aren’t cars banned? And if society doesn’t, why should I even be obligated to wear a mask at my discomfort. This is a question that this thread hasn’t tackled logically. Of course if you are riding on passion you will have a hard time with this interesting question.
As I said about, and to be frank, it’s not an interesting question.
We do impose speed limits to protect people.
You are not making an apples to apples comparison.
You are asking if the speed limit isn’t 40mph, why should we wear masks.
But the fact that there is a speed limit in it of itself, is the same logical reason why we should be wearing masks.
Your entire premise is answering your “interesting” question. Hence it’s really not all that interesting in the first place.
If you really want to think about it more though, think about School Zones, where the speed limit is 15-25mph.
Speed limit laws are a fantastic example of why people SHOULD be wearing masks, because they save lives and protect those most vulnerable such as the school zone example…
JJ, you made that point earlier and I thought I addressed it. It’s true that speed limits were put in place to save lives. But it’s also true that an even lower speed limit, or the banning of cars altogether would save even more lives. Where to we draw the line. The current speed limit still cost 35,000 lives a year (thanks for the correction). A higher one would cost more. A lower one would cost less. A total ban on driving would save all 35,000. Who decided that the convenience of driving at 65 mph is worthwhile at a cost of 35,000 lives but a lower one which would save thousands more is not worth giving up the convenience of quicker driving? Yes I think anyone unbiased would find this argument compelling. Certain conveniences that we all enjoy cost lives and we aren’t banning them.
You clearly don’t understand my point.
You are saying there are tough decisions to be made on what risk to benefit ratio we are comfortable with as a society.
And how it’s a novel moral dilemma.
This isn’t novel at all.
This is all addressing:
“There’s a logical case to be made that younger people shouldn’t need to be uncomfortable to protect older vulnerable people taking risks by going to public places. Do you also support lowering highway speed limits to 40 mph to protect the older drivers with slower reflexes from getting into a car accident?
If grandma wants to drive, it’s a risk she’s taking and others shouldn’t be inconvenienced to protect her.”
You said “people shouldn’t be inconvenienced to protect her?” But that is exactly what we do every day. We DO IN FACT HAVE SPEED LIMITS.
So to say speed limits bring up the question of whether we need to wear masks is not valid.
Speed limits show that we do have laws to protect people. Therefor it’s logical to have laws to wear masks, as that protects people.
And when people are more at risk such as a school zone or a residential neighborhood, the speed limits ARE lower.
So please, stop saying that the fact that speed limits aren’t 40mph, proves we don’t need to wear masks. The fact that we have varying speed limits based on areas, proves we should have an obligation and laws TO WEAR MASKS.
And to say that we shouldn’t drive is in itself also ridiculous, there is of course a risk benefit ratio. Society would not function, commerce would not be possible, getting life saving drugs, hospitals, etc etc would not be possible in a modern world without cars. It’s almost as bad a advocating to close all hospitals because people die there…Or if you suggested to close pharmacies during the beginning of the pandemic so people stay home, there is such a thing as essential to life, and driving in a modern world is of course essential to life.
Worried about getting a headache from wearing a mask? Not essential to life, sorry.
So you’re proving the obligation for masks from the state legislators that decided what speed limits are where. What is THEIR guiding principle? That’s like proving that abortion is morally correct from the fact that it’s legal. They have the magic wand to tell them how many lives are worth a certain convenience in society?! I’m not for abolishing speed limits (although in Europe there are Highways without speed limits). I’m just making a point that we really don’t have a clear line on this and neither do those who set the speed limits.
And your summation of all this is that young people should not have to wear masks in public? Ok, I’m out. You said I wasn’t being logical, but now you’ve gone off the deep end.
Please read this again, if you want to change position that’s fine, but I am working within the confines of the point you were trying to make, and I showed it proves the exact opposite point:
“There’s a logical case to be made that younger people shouldn’t need to be uncomfortable to protect older vulnerable people taking risks by going to public places. Do you also support lowering highway speed limits to 40 mph to protect the older drivers with slower reflexes from getting into a car accident?
If grandma wants to drive, it’s a risk she’s taking and others shouldn’t be inconvenienced to protect her.”
Ok, JJ! Thanks for your time. Have a great Yom tov!
Over 200 thousand people in the USA alone has died of Covid.
“restrict your rights”, next you are going to tell me you should be able to walk around without clothes. How is wearing something that helps to save lives all out restricting rights?
Don’t believe in the benefits of masks? Then wear it because it makes other people comfortable and you want to be a mench.
I absolutely agree with you that you should wear a mask to be a mentch and not get others nervous. I’m not an anti masker at all. I was just exploring the question if society as a whole has a moral obligation to do something uncomfortable for the sake of saving lives of lives and I point to cars as an obvious example of a convenience that noone is banning even though it costs 1.35 million lives a year globally.
Oh my!
I think there’s something to add here…because of the possibility of asymptomatic people around in public vulnerable people are putting themselves at risk by going out at all so if they decide to go out anyways…
I checked my oxygen levels with and without my N95, the difference was either 1% or less, not significant.
Really? Scientifically proven? Don’t just say that, provide the “proven science”.
Ill give you some info from the cdc website and from pubmed, with links, that’ll help you discover that there is no scientific evidence. To the contrary, the evidence that is available shows it doesn’t help for preventing spread of influenza & cold
From cdc website
“There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza.”
Look it up; https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/5/19-0994_article
And a study on pubmed
“Conclusion: Face mask use in health care workers has not been demonstrated to provide benefit in terms of cold symptoms or getting colds. A larger study is needed to definitively establish noninferiority of no mask use.”
Look it up; https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19216002/
Those don’t have asymptomatic spread. COVID does, which is why the CDC recommends masks for COVID-19. The CDC also didn’t want non-medical professionals to buy up limited PPE.

Funny all you can find are cherry picked articles from 2009 or from May. Yet you ignore the header over the articles telling you to look at the recent evidence and medical consensus.
Your ‘proof’ warns you, “COVID-19 is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation. Get the latest public health information from CDC: https://www.coronavirus.gov.”

In 1918 there was a lot of mask “resistance” as well to the mandates, including holes poked in masks for smoking!! I was interested in reports an old news article about a ship that spread the flu like crazy onboard going across the Atlantic, and when returning the Captain had everyone wear masks…no spread. Anecdotal, but convincing to someone who lived on a vessel in the military. Whatever your thoughts on the efficacy, mask wearing is a courtesy to others. We expect our lowest paid retail and restaurant workers to police mask wearing, and let me tell you, it is no fun for them. Why are some individuals so hell bent on making this situation as miserable as possible? NOBODY wants to wear a mask, and nobody is enjoying your rants and raves about your civil liberties being infringed upon. Find one that works the best for you, and be polite. Think of others, and lets get through this together. United we stand, divided we fall.
But you would use mosquito netting because that works. Bad analogies don’t change the facts just because you don’t like them.
Don’t believe in the benefits of masks? Then wear it because it makes other people comfortable and you want to be a mench.
Well put
Where is your research, are you more qualified, than top doctors and scientists? Your ignorance leaves others blood on your hands!
Definitely a scary time.
Definitely not on Zoom. Apparently Zoom collects data for China.

Lol, everything in 2020 needs a conspiracy theory.
Sounds good, except Trump needs every shot he can get to catch up. Being in quarantine for 2 weeks is not what he wants to do a month before the election.

Dan. I am surprised to see that the moderators allowed a comment that calls for an armed uprising was allowed on this site. Disappointing.
I haven’t moderated this discussion at all. If I did, most of the posts wouldn’t exist and that’s a slippery slope.
I think it’s generally important for people to see and be aware what other viewpoints are out there. That’s not to say there’s no line, but it’s a tough call to make.
I’m all for open discourse. For me the line is drawn at calling for armed rebellion. Just my two cents. Your forum your call.
Fair enough, this one slipped through.
Wow, a real life Nazi on this board? When he was speaking to the Proud Boys (of “JEWS WILL NOT REPLACE US” fame), you felt he was talking to you, huh? A new low in the race to the bottom of humanity.

Otherwise, he’s toast.
What am I missing?
Is this a: Site announcement? Deal? Credit card? Flight related? Mazel tov? Peace deal – and then subsequently new flight routes to TLV? Trip report?
Are you going to remind all your US readers to vote too?
It’s a mazel tov to China. Mazel tov China. U got it done
Trump attended an in-person fundraiser in New Jersey on Thursday *after* he found out that he had covid.
He attended a fundraiser after he knew hope hicks had covid
Ah now I’m seeing conflicting reports.
I hope he can get ahold of some good hydroxy or at least fish tank cleaner. It worked for me.
Random: if we all locked down for 14 days then another 14 days of total lockdown it’ll be over right? 2:30 AM THINKING
That’s what New Zealand did and it worked.
Except you would need a real lockdown, which is all but impossible here.
Until when? The entire world is covid free?
Practically every other country has mostly contained the virus already. We’re the problem country. That’s why a US passport doesn’t allow you to travel anymore.
No No. Don’t say that.
We always have India which will give a close fight for everything stupid.
I wonder if Dr Zelenko will enter the picture
He started to, on Twitter

“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills.”. ~Ernest Hemingway
President Trump will come out stronger than ever to Win the election in November.
I just got my positive result. Right along with a bunch of famous people.
The worst thing that can happen here is that he has a speedy recovery that he can then boast about how insignificant the “China flu” really is . . .
The great Jewish sage and leader, Hagaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, 93, tested positive for the coronavirus on Friday, Erev Sukkos. Baruch Hashem, his condition is good and he is at home learning his regular sedarim as usual under close medical supervision.
HaRav Chaim’s family members stated: “Due to changes in the Rav’s temperature, the Rav was tested and was found positive for the coronavirus. B’Siyata Dishmaya, the Rav is currently feeling well and is continuing his sidrei limud as usual and of course, is under close medical supervision.”
The public is asked to daven for the refuah sheleimah of HaRav Shamriyahu Yosef Chaim ben Pesha Miriam b’toch shaar cholei Yisrael.
So Insane & sad that so many people actually believe mask dont work. The more you try to convince them, the stronger their fake conviction gets.
Agreed. But you can’t beat a dead horse. I avoid such debates like, well, like the coronavirus.
Thank you Dan for being a voice of reason and trying to keep people safe and healthy no matter what their political affiliation.
Agreed. Maybe time to put it in article that we can share?
Dan & JJ, thanks for fighting disinformation here. This site is emphatically nonpartisan–hopefully some of your followers will consider that and actually listen.
Yes!
For all those non believers out there. Just wear the damn mask to make other feel comfortable. Wear the damn mask because drs say you should. And wear the damn mask because every time someone with a kippah is walking on the street without one, it’s causing a huge chilul Hashem. You can shukel all you want in shul but The moment you go outside and cause others to look down at you, which in turn looks down of all of us, all that davening was for nothing.
That’s not how chillul hashem works.
They look down at me as I am doing Kaparos, does that mean my Kaparos was for nothing?
They look down on you for the way you mistreat the animals. Kapores is one thing but shtupping too many chickens into a crate where the break bones and suffocate is another. And, absolutely, if you commit tzar baalei Chaim, an aveira, in order to perform kapores, your kapores is for nothing.
Chickens come in creates that are used all year to transport from the growth farm to the slaughter house. There are specific rules used as far as how many per crate. Don’t start blaming Jews for something done industrywide.
Nowhere did I say that placing/keeping/transporting chickens in crates is a problem (although I do believe it is, but my personal vegetarianism is not revenant here). A very simple foil request to see how many violations, for not following the industry standards, are issued to pop up kapores centers will more than illustrate my point. Please do not take my word for it, do your own research.
Kaporos is a mitzvah. There is no mitzvah not to wear a mask and therefore we do need to take chillul Hashem into account.
Ahavas yisroel.
V’nishmartem meod L’nafshoseichem.
Dan, I totally agree that ahavas Yisrael point and that’s another reason to wear a mask. However v’nishmartem isn’t clear in this case. The Gemara says that v’nishmartem only applies where it is “shchiach hezika” (damage is likely or prevalent). Given the percentage of people who are being affected from covid, it’s hard to believe that case would qualify as “shchiach hezika”.
More than enough death and long-term virus damage to qualify.
Really? With a hospitalization rate of 174.8 in 100,000 (as per the CDC website) in the US, you call that shchiach hezika?? Even if my figures aren’t halachically relevant as you perhaps have to sample your specific area, it is still definitely less than 1 in a hundred. Is even that considered shchiach hezika to apply the mitzvah deoraisa of v’nishmartem??
You find all over Shas, tanaaim traveling via ship. Was the rate of ships lost at sea less than the hospitalization rates of covid? I assume not. Yet they didn’t consider traveling by ship to violate v’nishmartem.
I must have misread my post. I don’t see anything in there that says kapores is not a mitzvah (a conversation for another time, but that was not my point here).
Kaporos is actually a minhag and a minhag that since it was begun in the times of the Geonim (no mention in shas) has been debated if it is permitted. If a mask saves a life, then it is an incredibly important mitzvah. If it creates a kiddush hashem and avoids a chilul hashem, then it is a pretty important mitzvah. If it is being kind to your fellow human who is nervous, then i’m pretty sure that there might be a few commandments in the Torah where you would check the box.
Stop this nonsense. Is it annoying? Yes. Might it feel like it is infringing on some of your western culture’s understanding of freedom? Probably. But it can help slow the spread. Try blowing out a candle with it on. Can’t because you can’t project you air flow too far. If you are a carrier, then you spread it less. This isn’t difficult to understand, it just difficult for some people to do.
I also got headaches in the beginning, but you adjust. You know how to spot the people that don’t practice proper masking…the don’t cover their nose because they haven’t gotten used to it.
Thank you Tani. Very well put. Like I mentioned, I didn’t want to get into the nuances of the origins of kapores, but even assuming arguendo that kapores is a mitzva d’aroisa, the tzar baalei Chaim (perpetrated by few but widely publicized) is where the chillul Hashem comes in and the only reason I have seen for why people “look down” on those doing kapores.
I absolutely agree with you. Frum people are making a huge chillul Hashem by not wearing masks in public. That has nothing to do with my earlier dialogue earlier in the thread.
Comprehensive mask study from before it became a political issue:
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/5/19-0994_article
A relative of mine succinctly summarized the situation during the chag. She sat on the ground searching for a dropped fingernail for 10 minutes but refuses to wear a mask. Go figure.
Is she pregnant? If yes, then it’s obvious. The chances of her stepping on a nail on her floor is higher than the chance of her getting covid by not wearing a mask.
Your intelligence is shining. You refuse to believe that masks are the best solution to prevent infection, however, you do believe that stepping on a toenail can somehow harm a fetus (something that science has never demonstrated to be true, nor would anyone with a half a brain waste their time researching). Get off the forums and get educated.
@Dan is scoffing at Chaza”l really allowed on your site?
If not please remove the previuos comment.
I never once mentioned that masks don’t help prevent infection. I said that the chances of stepping on a nail is higher than her mask preventing her from getting covid.
I don’t know if you’re Jewish but if you are then it’s openly stated in the Shulchan Aruch O”Ch simen 260 (see Machtzis HaShekel). Yes if you don’t believe in the truth of Torah, you won’t find it in science.
This being a “discussion board”, we should discuss, not argue. Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur is over and what was written is happening NOW. Our best defense is achdus. Praying this will still be a good quampaign for Trump,
Respectfully debating an issue doesn’t have to mean lack of achdus. If everyone would follow Dan and JJ by example and never demean anyone, then this forum would be much better.
So, so many thoughts come to mind:
Mocking Biden for mask-wearing
Explaining to the public how he cares about the people around him and those crowding into his rallies without masks.
Hydroxychloroquine
Fake news and conspiracies
Big 10 football
Opening schools and restaurants while still in the midst of a pandemic (maybe calling it a plague would be more helpful with people being compliant)
2nd wave (can you even have one if the first one never ended? OK, maybe in NY)
Sympathy/empathy for someone who doesn’t show it himself
My mind hurts and my emotions are running rampant.
Not getting into politics, but you do realize that the President doesn’t determine whether restaurants can have indoor dining/schooling/sports in localities such as NYC, Kansas City, or Dallas, etc
I just really hope you don’t update this post with an expired tag.
This site has become political, like so much of society today.
Dan’s Deals was always my safe space for non political news. No longer. SAD.
I’m probably the least political person out there. I don’t enjoy political debates and find most politicians to be hypocrites.
But this is surely newsworthy.
Nothing I’ve said here is influenced by politics or should have anything to do with politics and the fact that people are trying to politicize it distresses me.
Yes, it’s so sad how many people can’t separate life from low life politicians and politics.
oxygen level DOES get lower while wearing a mask
1. Source? 2. If true, source it has a measure negative impact on health?
Actually research shows it does not
One thing is certain:
Dan is not gloating. Neither is his buddy – with his favorite name of the day, or two or three – Count Valitine, KB, CM and various others.
Only a sick individual would gloat about this. I have never seen so many individuals with such low willpower that can’t separate politics from things that really matter.
This post definitely shows what a mentch Dan and JJ are. Being a mentch like this brings lots of kovod to Chabad.
He obviously caught it from Jared who got it in Shul Rosh Hashana.
If this virus had a 50% death rate like Ebola everyone would agree that drastic measures are needed. The issue here is that 99+% of the people who get it recover.
The question is at what point do you say let’s get on with life and just focus on protecting the elderly and high risk people?
Drastic measures? I really don’t understand how wearing a mask until there’s a vaccine is drastic.
You’re also ignoring the high percentage of previously healthy people who have long-term damage from the virus.
Over 200 thousand people are dead in the USA. Sounds serious to me.
Thank G-d Covid does not have a 50% death rate considering how many people don’t care about keeping the community safe.
What is the high percentage?
Why not focus on the high risk and elderly? Like don’t send them back to nursing homes.
I am unsure why everyone is banking on this vaccine. Vaccines take years to develop and test. Do you want to take a vaccine that was pushed through in 6 months?
The flu vaccine which doesn’t really work yet it was worked on for decades. In general vaccines are way more complicated for viruses than for bacteria.
1. Bibi just said as high as 20% in Israel. That seems high to me, but that’s his claim.
2. We are focused on that. Nobody has done that since Cuomo half a year ago. What else can be done?
3. No vaccine has ever had this much time and money poured into it. It will be tested on hundreds of thousands to make sure it works and is safe.
4. The flu mutates completely every year. So far, covid has not had major mutations.
1. As you said, Bibi saying so is not necessarily accurate. We don’t know the true numbers.
2. We are now focused on that and need to continue to focus on that, but not necessarily at the expense of everyone else. The only thing that can be done is have the elderly wear N95s when they go out, otherwise quarantine. (although the ones I’ve spoken to said they would rather take their chances and if they had to quarantine again for months they would rather be dead)
3. I hope it works but I will definitely not be waiting on line for the first round or the 10th round. Personally would want at least a few years of usage before taking it.
4. It hasn’t been a year yet so there is time to mutate. Furthermore, major mutations may not be necessary for the vaccine not to work.
Agree with your points, Steve, but not many others will!
Anyone who wants to know why Trump has been horrible for this country just has to read the comment section on this post. I’m not a huge mask wearer but the fact that so many people are so anti-mask wearing is absolutely from Trump’s immature leadership. I’d like to see him consider drinking bleach…
I wish Trump the best of luck in a speedy recovery so we get the election and election outcome we deserve. I hope to see a “healthy” as usual Trump lose the election and then see how he (and those complicit in any of his unlawful activities) are subject to any and all local, state and federal judicial and other legal proceedings as are due him (and his accomplices) when he is an ex-President and has no one in a position of authority able and willing to pardon him and his accomplices for whatever illegal activity they have committed in the US.
Lol. First time poster and this did it. Good on you for wishing the President well and telling people masks work; unfortunately, this thread further proves anything involving Donald is a s**tshow!
One thing I never see or heard of: someone who got Sick from COVID, recovered and then still talks the big talk about “masks dont work”.
Why is that?
Masks don’t work
I have definitely seen it. My mom was full on haz-mat the last 6 months and just got it and recovered. Now she is anti-masks.
Are her wits about her in every other way, though?
Coronavirus impacts cognitive functioning…
Reminds me of someone I know how has lung cancer. Never smoked. I guess that means I may as well take up smoking
I watched the debate live- was I exposed? This ruins my Y”T
Whether masks work or not, they will make some of the people around you less anxious. For me, that is enough.
COVID has brought us a major challenge in Sin’as Chinom – lets try to make Ahavas Chinom win out. Maybe that is why Hashem is testing us with this.
Wearing a mask or not the Mitzvah of ואהבת לרעך כמוך applies.
but getting angry at people for not wearing masks has nothing to do with ואהבת לרעך כמוך but I guess that how most fights go, I want everyone to be at peace just they need to see my standpoint to happen.
Zvi, respectfully, you didn’t read what I wrote. I said whether someone is wearing a mask or not the Mitzvah of ואהבת לרעך כמוך applies. You are 1000% right, there is hate being thrown in both directions, and this must stop if want Hashem’s help.
Maran Sar HaTorah HoRav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, this was tested and found to be positive for Corona
Daven for a refuah shleima for Shmaryahu Yosef Chaim ben Pesha Miriam.
Wow! First time there is positivereporting about the president!
Trump always said he knows better than the DOCTORS, GENERALS, etc etc.
What do you say now Mr. Know it All?
Some say RBG won her first case with God
With her history of anti-Torah policies, I can’t see that happening
Biden will win by a wider margin than if Trump had not made fun of his mask. Biden’s coattails may widen the Democratic majority in the Senate by a seat or two. In other news today, Demonized Nancy Pelosi announced there may be a separate bail-out package just for the airlines. It’s good to know that there is one welfare program with bipartisan support, but who wants to fly until there is a vaccine?
Speaking of vaccine, the Chinese seem to have a good one. If Trump had been on friendlier terms with Xi, maybe he could have asked for a dose.
Right, we trust the Chinese!
Karma!!
Why do people believe in the science of condoms but not masks?
