The eyes of the world are on OceanGate’s Titan, a submersible that takes tourists some 13,000 feet under the sea to view the Titanic wreck, for a cool $250,000 per passenger.
It set out from the Polar Prince yesterday morning with a pilot and 4 passengers and lost contact with the base ship about 105 minutes after launch.
One passenger is Hamish Harding, a British billionaire that has gone into space with Blue Origin and has set 3 world records in the air and underseas.
The Titan has about 96 hours of oxygen onboard via onboard CO2 scrubbers and oxygen tanks. It’s now a race against time to locate it and several countries and private enterprises are trying to do just that.
CBS correspondent David Pogue was invited by OceanGate to take a submersible dive down to the Titanic last year, and frankly the video is rather shocking.
In it, they too lose communication with the base ship for several hours, rendering themselves lost. The submersible can’t use GPS underwater, so it’s reliant on the base ship for communications on where to go.
But it’s the report starting at 3:23 into the video that gets weird. OceanGate’s CEO brags about how he bought some of the submersible’s components from Camper World. And then exclaims that he runs the whole submersible with a video game controller.
Nothing like having to rely on a video game controller that you can buy on Amazon for $29.99.
Maybe they just need to blow into it?
Based on that, one has to wonder what sort of communication system they were using that went out on the news reporter’s trip as well as yesterday’s trip?
The submersible is outfitted with 7 methods of resurfacing, though they include methods such as everyone going to one side of the ship in order to get the lead pipes that keep them submerged to roll off of the ship. No wonder this submersible was never certified to do what it’s being tasked to do.
Seemingly the submersible would have resurfaced if it could have via systems like propellers or inflatables, though it would still have to be found. There is no way for it to be opened from the inside to obtain more oxygen, it has to be unbolted from the outside.
Otherwise, it may have gotten tangled in underwater debris or wreckage, or worse, sprung a leak.
It’s a terrifying story for anyone that loves adventure, though I’d like to think even if a trip like this were to be bookable with miles, that I’d have turned it down based on how janky the outfitting is.
Let’s pray that the ship and passengers are located swiftly and safely.

Using video game controllers is common practice for robotics and military uses, including air force UAVs. Why reinvent the wheel
Yea pretty common – even on a US Navy sub! At 8:30 mark, they use x-box controllers: https://youtu.be/0StWrXoN8nI?t=507

even for underwater UAVs, EOD robots, drones… sounds like definite problems with the sub but using a video game controller in itself is not necessarily a problem
Just because it works for unmanned aircraft doesn’t mean I want it to control a bleeding edge manned ship.
This
price≠quality
Perhaps, but the video scares me.
It’s fine to MacGyver things in general, but I don’t want to hear about corners being cut on a machine like this.
And to lose a ship for 3 hours on a media tour and not fix the problem before sending out another ship?
Something seems seriously wrong at this outfit.
I agree about the loss of communications, since that is also navigation, apparently. Re the video controller – those things break easily, at a minimum I wouldn’t go without multiple spares. Imagine if the thing breaks and they can’t get to the surface for want of a $29 controller.
Probably got it on Dan’s Deals….:)
What does Janky mean?
Well, it is the lowest price ever from Amazon currently. 😀

It sounds weird, but it’s not without precedent. The US Navy uses Xbox controllers on some of their submarines.

Seems like the XBox controller controls the periscopes, not the entire ship! The mission doesn’t fail if it malfunctions.
Also, the XBox controller is famously well built. This wasn’t an XBox controller.
Hopefully they don’t make a tour of the Titan remains.
Yikes !
Titanic is 12,500ft down and the Titan submersible is rated for 13,100ft. What could possibly go wrong!
Thanks Dan for posting this very fascinating newsworthy article ..
So much more interesting Than shampoo on sale.. 🙂

Story summary on wiki less the distraction of other news
How do you know they paid $29.99 there might have been a deal or coupon who knows?
there are no deep-submergence rescue vehicles that can go below 12,000 feet. The deepest operating depth of any DSRV is 5,000 feet, which is the depth of the DSRV-2 Avalon, I just hope there’s some military subs we don’t know about that can at least try…
The five people who are currently trapped in the Titanic submersible are:
Hamish Harding, a British billionaire and the founder of Action Aviation
Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French explorer and submersible pilot
Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, the company that owns and operates the submersible
Shahzada Fareed Dawood, a Pakistani businessman and the chairman of the Dawood Group
Sulaiman Dawood, the son of Shahzada Fareed Dawood

Did we just broke the record for the most expensive travel deal in DD history?
Nah, first pitch at the World Series sold for $500,000 after Starwood stopped auctioning it off.

Right, reffering to travel 🙂
Not to be a party pooper, but there are 5 human beings at major risk of their lives. Maybe not the best time or place for jokes?
Who is joking?
So canadian
What’s the return policy? Do the families get the $250,000 back, as the expedition ended in death for their loved ones. Try arguing that one with your CC company
