Update: United has announced that they will also suspend all flights to China from February 6-March 27. Flights are also being suspended between Newark and Hong Kong.
Last night the US State Department issued its strongest warning, Level 4, to avoid all travel to China due to the Novel Coronavirus that has been spreading exponentially since its jump from animal to human at a Wuhan wet market.
- American has announced that they are suspending all flights to China from now through March 27.
- Delta has announced they will suspend flights to China from February 4 through April 30.
United has announced reduced flights to China and Hong Kong, but as the largest US carrier to China, they have not yet announced that they will suspend operations. I’d expect them to do so shortly though as they come under pressure from crew and the State Department.
Other airlines around the world, from El Al to Air Canada to British Airways, have already announced suspensions of flights to China.
Passengers can contact their airline for a refund or change of travel dates.
Personally, I’m booked to fly on Cathay Pacific between NYC and Vancouver next month and am rethinking that trip as well.
Did you have plans to travel to China or elsewhere in Asia? What are your thoughts on the Novel Coronavirus?

For now is this just mainland China? ( no HK impact yet)
Hong Kong flights are being reduced, but these full suspensions are just for the mainland.
Are United and Cathay reducing or cancelling their flights to/from US/HKG?
Yes.
United is suspending EWR-HKG service and reducing SFO-HKG service through the end of March. They’re also allowing free changes for travel to HKG.
why not fly YVR ? afraid of crew being sick ?
Crew, fellow passengers coming from China, etc.
Could be unfounded, but it’s not a necessary trip.
so you took all F seats 🙂
Would you cancel also NY to TLV (rt)? Am thinking about all the ppl who just booked on Air Serbia in April-May, but may be things would change for the better ’till then. What do you think?
Should be fine.
I dont believe this is because of the virus, it’s just not worth it for them to fly to china right now. They will lose money.
If they really cared about health they would have mentioned this earlier!
It may also have to do with the flight attendant and pilot unions. AA’s pilot union demanded that all flights to China be suspended.
AA doesn’t fly into mainland China. Does this affect their LAX-HKG route? I’m going in March.
Erm, they most certainly do fly to mainland China.
HKG is likely to see flight reductions as well.
Really? I had no idea. Which routes?
DFW-PEK/PVG
LAX-PEK/PVG
Shanghai and Beijing
The United flight I took from EWR -TLV was on an incoming aircraft from China. The Coke was Chinese. So this Chinese flue can affect even those who never go China.
Any word on where the excess capacity is going? Can we expect to see some domestic routes upgauged to wide bodies?
Great minds 🙂
