Over the past couple of years, El Al has tested select coffin-free flights between JFK and Tel Aviv so that Kohanim can fly the airline from JFK.

Kohanim who can’t be on a plane with dead bodies have traditionally traveled on El Al’s Newark flights which don’t carry the deceased to Israel to be buried in the holy land.

With scarce availability to Israel, running select coffin-free flights from JFK has helped Kohanim fly to Israel thanks to those flight options over the past couple months.

But on the flip side, limited flights has also increased demand on those remaining flights for coffin space for people who want to be buried in the holy land.

Starting tomorrow, El Al will resume accepting coffins on all JFK-Tel Aviv flights. The airline also accepts coffins on Miami and Los Angeles to Tel Aviv flights.

Coffins are not accepted on Boston, Fort Lauderdale, or Newark to Tel Aviv flights.

El Al notes that each coffin is individually wrapped and that a Kohen can check with their Rabbi to see if that is sufficient to be allowed to fly on those flights, or if it may be allowed when other flights aren’t available.

As I personally witnessed each coffin gets put in another box that more than a טפח of additional space on top of the coffin. This was never a real issue!!

“I wonder if it’s more cost effective to fly in a coffin than in business class”. “I hear that the legroom is better in a coffin than in economy”. “The beautiful thing about flying in a coffin is that the credit card statement arrives well *after* you are buried”……

Will El Al consider bring Nasrallah Coffin?

1. Not necessarily does a tefach help. beyond the scope of the comments section on DD.
2. All El Al flights out of Newark, Boston and Ft. Lauderdale are Kohen friendly.
3. United, when they fly to TLV out of Newark takes bodies, and is thus not Kohen friendly. (yehi ratzon that they should be able to resume those flights soon)

Speak to your LOR. The flight path may also be an issue if it flies over Jewish cemeteries.

IDK about cemeteries abroad, but any cemetery in Israel is a non-issue. ALL Kevorim in EY are put up with a double פותח טפח – one inside the grave and the second since all the מצבות are built hollow. (My father was in חברה קדישא in EY for many years and confirmed this clearly)
