With Israel’s borders closed to foreign nationals through at least June 30th, El Al remains in hibernation mode. The airline is negotiating with the Israeli government for a bailout that will require the airline to shrink in size.
Generally speaking, you can see if your flight will be cancelled based on which flights the airline is still selling. Based on researching which flights El Al is currently selling, below is a roundup of apparent route cancellations. Of course this is still subject to change until a flight is formally cancelled and flights can still be further delayed as well.
New service launches to Chicago and Tokyo are delayed until next March. If the airline is forced to shrink, it wouldn’t be surprising to see those launches cancelled or delayed further.
Also interesting is that El Al isn’t selling any flights to Las Vegas or Orlando and they aren’t selling flights to Boston or San Francisco until next March. These are routes where El Al has struggled to make a profit and I wouldn’t be surprised if some or all of these routes are permanently cancelled in an environment where El Al is forced to shrink.

Wasn’t the SFO route already announced it would be Axed before Corona? what is the last date its for sale?
Nope.
I didn’t see why El Al opted to go head-to-head with UA on SFO. If they wanted a foothold in that area, why not the smaller, friendlier, more convenient SJC?
It never made any sense. I’ve said that from when they announced the route.
@Dan can you explain the shrinking part? What is the point? Why?
Limit the total potential losses, especially on flights that weren’t profitable or were just marginally profitable pre-corona.
What about service to London STN?
Added to the post, thanks.
My reservation for July 12th hasn’t been cancelled formally yet…
LY10 JFK – TLV
It will be in all likelihood. But they don’t officially cancel until much closer in.
Ly10 jfk-tlv for end of June was cancelled today. Frustrating.
Have any of United EWR TLV flight’s ticketed recently been cancelled? Does United require passengers provide Israeli-entry-approval prior to boarding?
United EWR-TLV 90/91 is the only route in the world to TLV that has been operating consistently.
Great!
Does United require passengers to provide proof of Israeli citizenship (i.e., must fly on IL Passport) or “Center Of life” to fly to TLV?
Yes, citizenship or permission to fly from Israel.
This might be posturing too — by cancelling a bunch of flights they are showing the gov’t they NEED a bailout.
There is going to be a bailout, everyone know that.
It’s just a question of the terms.
Sad, we were in a golden age of flights to Israel pre-COVID with non stops from EWR, JFK, TOR, BOS, IAD, MIA, MCO, LAS, LAX, and SFO, with projected service to start from MDW and DFW as well. All that traffic would have served to help keep prices down and award seats up. Sadly, looks like we’ll be back to a few years ago when it’s NYC, LA, TOR, and SFO, with maybe a couple of others sticking around like MIA.
Yup, very sad to see a record year shrink to close to nothing.
There were nonstop flights from TOR to Israel? I don’t recall seeing any flights from Torrington, Wyoming…
Uber chuchem!
Did you know that off the bat or did you look up every airport code from the list???
I’d give him benefit of the doubt- all the other airport codes in the list are pretty well-known, I know I knew them, and “TOR” kind of stands out like a sore thumb and is obviously wrong.
But I’d be shocked if anyone here knew which city TOR was without checking…
When was MDW ever in the books?
Dan,
Thank you for the info. We have tickets for July 6 on LY28 from Newark to TLV, and returning in August. Is there somewhere where the cancellation you mentioned (Newark through August) appears, so that I can show it my travel agent to seek a refund?
Thank you!
Try to buy the flight.
Dan maybe you help I can’t seem to get my money refunded from elal they cancelled my return date in March and I spoke to them then and they said I will see a. Refund of the money within 30 days haven’t heard from them since filed a complaint with dot never got a answerdisputed my charge on Citi and they fought back and won of course not sure why!!!
What else am I supposed to do
Thanks
File another DoT complaint and fill out the El Al refund form.
Which El Al refund form are you referring to? I’ve tried filing here (https://www.elal.com/CancelReservationUsa), but it cant’ find my reservation :(.
We’re in the same situation (flights cancelled by El Al back in March, promised refund, nothing came, disputed the charge with Chase, El Al fought back and won 🙁 ). Our flights were from TLV to Rome, thus can’t file DoT complaint. We don’t have proof of cancellation either (aside from news that all El Al flights to Italy were canceled at that time).
And contest the charge again. El Al did this to me with Capital One and I countered by contesting a second time with proof of the cancelation. Second time seems to have worked.
Elal officially just canceled ALL flights from june 20 aand on… remains to be seen abt July.
Bc of small second wave in israel and govt taking strong stand
I have email if anyone wants
@dan
Do you have an info on when Israel will be allowing non citizens to enter??
If EL AL cancels my flight, will they give me a full refund or only credit to be used within a certain amount of time?
Any help would be appreciated.
Can someone please advise?
Thank you.
Hello – can anyone help me find someone to speak to at el al. My flight is June 29 it has been cancelled but the flight was a gift and I really need a credit to use next year (hopefully) not a refund. I’m sure that would be fine with el al but I’ve filled out the contact form twice on the website and of course no response. I just need to speak to someone. Any help?
Is it possible for a non Israeli citizen to fly with his spouse, an Israeli citizen (Israeli passport) in July for a family event? Can we petition the Israeli embassy or consulate? We will quarantine as required.
We had a flight scheduled from Chicago next week. No refund yet, filed a complaint with DoT and with my credit card. Now El Al fighting back saying they will give a credit for 12 months and then if not used, will refund. I wrote back to my CC and said based on DoT rules, they must refund (https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/aviation-consumer-protection/refunds) since they cancelled the flight, even for non-refundable flights. Waiting to hear back now, but if/when we travel to Israel again, it will never be with El Al!
PLUS, who knows if ElAl will ever return to the Chicago market— it didn’t even begin
Why is the estimated delay for Chicago until March 2021 and not earlier?
Received a email from Chase travel yesterday that my June Elal flight from Prague to Tlv return Tlv to Budapest has been canceled and gave me a voucher for the same amount I paid to book a future flight on Elal that needs to be completed by December 2021.
I have an Elal flight scheduled for July 1 (JFK-TLV) for an Israel program that is not taking place. Ticket was booked through Chase UR. What is the best strategy here – hope the flight is cancelled and then hope i get a refund, or take a credit now though no idea if i’ll be able to use it by Dec 2021? Appreciate any advice!
Maybe they should just stuck to Cargo
I had a flight for my son booked for June 16th. Received the email from ElAl saying that (at the time) all flights were cancelled through June 20th. It also said that they are currently “freezing” my ticket and that either a change of destination or refund will be done once they return to full operations. I saw on ElAl’s site a form to fill out to request a refund for a ticket – has anyone filled this out in addition to an email from ElAl?
Tread carefully. It has very tricky lingo.
Any update on elal refund still waiting from mine through chase ultimate rewards?
just received an official email from ELAL that my 6/22 flight is cancelled:
Dear EL AL Passenger,
Due to the COVID-19 situation EL AL flights that were scheduled to depart on 21-30/06 have been canceled.
At this period we will freeze your ticket.
Change of a destination or receiving a refund for your ticket will be done once we will return to a full operations.
You can follow our flight schedule on our website: http://www.elal.com
We wish to apologize for the inconvenience.
EL AL.
I’m not satisfied with this meaningless (non) update and since I’ll accept nothing less than a refund, just filed a DOT complaint.
I would like to fill out the official refund form they have, but this part stopped me in my tracks. Don’t trust them at all:
“I confirm that I would like to cancel all flight tickets and their accompanying services on this booking”
Just flew with el al from tlv to Lhr with B. Class No extra b”c check in no lounge. on plane very poor meal must whear face mask on all flight, the flight 1st flew to Paris then to London while in Paris they cleaning crew comes to clean must say did not look any cleaner after that I felt bad for the people coming up in Paris finding dirty seats, and they charge full B. Class price
we have flights to Prague from TLV for Jul 2 but haven’t had an answer back yet…. paid with CSR points… they told me just wait… or they may just give us credits for another flight… so not interested :p
