Update: AA has joined the party and United has extended the elite exemption to anyone traveling with an elite member.

Here is my shot at providing some sanity to the new baggage fee. While most airlines have adopted it, they don’t share the same exemptions. The airlines are still tinkering with these new fees, so thay are all subject to change. While I hope these are all accurate, mistakes happen, so please feel free to comment if you think you’ve found one.
Here’s where it gets interesting. According to the contract of carriage of nearly every airline, if they change policies after you buy the ticket and don’t grandfather the old rules you have the right to demand a refund of your ticket. As of the time of this posting Airtran and Delta are not planning on offering a free 2nd bag to people who bought tickets before they announced their respective rule changes, and therefore should have to give out full refunds to people affected if they demand it…

WHAT ABOUT SOUTHWEST??
The best I was able to do after a full day of research is;
JFK – Zurich via LHR with BA for 100,000 miles, return, business class. Rome (FCO) – TLV via LHR, Continental airlines, business class, 110,000, return. This is for the end of August through the beginning of September. I have 3 days to confirm these reservations. Can I do any better and how? I have 220,000 Continental miles and 200,000 BA miles.
loyal reader,
I’m not sure what your looking to do, but let me tell you about an amazing itinerary i put together for myself. Newark to Venice with a two day stop over in Paris all in coach. And then returning from Rome to JFK with a two day stop over in London all in Business for a total of 75,000 miles!! Continental!!
Levi….what are the dates you were able to do this 75,000 mileage itinerary?
I am looking for a two week trip to include Israel and Europe, Business Class, at the end of August/beginning of September.
I have 220,000 Continental miles and 200,000 BA miles.
Thanks
I am departing EWR on July 8 and ariving back into JFK on July 17 The return flight from Rome to London and then from London to JFK I was told was only available on the SaverPass Business Class because of my elite status
Dan,
I am a premier exec with United & I just received an email regarding the bagggage limit. As a premier I can check up to 3 bags, each up to 70 lbs., while anyone traveling on the same reservation can check up to 2 bags, each up to 50 lbs.
It’s beyond the scope of this chart to go into the elite benefits of each airline…
As the chart indicates, United allows non-elites traveling with elites to take 2 free bags.
I just checked on Virgin America and it appears that they have similar policies. Below is a copy from their website:
Virgin America guests may check one bag free of charge that can weigh up to 70 pounds. All checked bags may have a maximum size of is 62 inches, which is calculated by adding the length plus the width plus the height. Additional bags, oversized bags, and overweight bags will be assessed a fee. Here’s the breakdown.
Additional bags:
Bag two – $10 weighing up to 50 lbs.
Bags three through ten – $50 weighing up to 50 lbs.
Overweight bags:
Bag one – $50 (71 to 100 lbs.)
Bags two through ten:
$25 (51 to 70 lbs.)
$50 (71 to 100lbs.)
Guests traveling with Virgin America in the First Class cabin may check in two pieces of baggage. The first bag may be up to 62 linear inches and weigh 70 pounds. The second bag may also be up to 62 linear inches and may weigh up to 50 pounds. Normal excess fees would apply to oversize and/or overweight bags as well as extra pieces.
Oversized bags – $50 (63 to 100 inches)
Is there any way for me to transfer my starwood points to continental without lossing 1/2 my points
Can anyone please explain, how to become an Elite status member on Airlines such as AA, CO, Delta?
Elite,

Dan,

Is it possible to pay extra and check in a 3rd bag.
