Phased updates? Who needs ’em!
CrowdStrike is a cybersecurity company founded in 2011 that now protects most major companies worldwide from cyberattacks.
A systemwide software update from the company this morning sent millions of computers running Windows into a blue screen of death (BSOD) bootloop.
It took down commercial flights globally, as well as hospitals, 911 centers, businesses, banks, news stations, and more.
Over 60% of Delta and United flights were affected:
Who knew our airlines run on Microsoft Flight Simulator

While DansDeals wasn’t directly affected by the outages, we have been dealing with the fallout.
You see, tomorrow, we celebrate our firstborn son’s Rafi’s Bar Mitzvah! Isn’t it crazy how time flies by?
But today, we were panicking as 2 of my brothers and my wife’s brother and their families were supposed to fly on United flight 2061 from Fort Lauderdale to Cleveland, and other relatives were flying from other locations with cancelations and delays.
JJ was booked to fly yesterday with his family, but pushed the flight to today after one of their kids got an ear infection.
And so today was spent looking into all sorts of alternate flight options, of which there aren’t many when you’re looking for some 17 people. Could they make it to Fort Myers for a flight to Columbus? Wait, are there any private jets that take miles?
Watching the flight get pushed back hour after hour was nerve-wracking though!
In some parts of the world, they went back to paper boarding passes:

The fix is time-consuming, requiring going from computer to computer to delete the bad update:

Some airports had blackboards with gate assignments after video monitors all had BSODs:
Well, that’s one way to do it.
Congratulating #CrowdStrike for reaching its carbon neutrality targets six years early through its disruption of global air traffic today!
— Boyan Slat (@BoyanSlat) July 19, 2024
CrowdStrike’s stock price, which was $392 on July 1st, is down to $304. Perhaps the market is betting on their services being less concentrated or that they will be sued for damages that insurance may not cover. It is scary that a bad software update can bring so much of the global economy to a standstill.
Elon Musk deleted the service from his companies’ servers:
We just deleted Crowdstrike from all our systems, so no rollouts at all
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 19, 2024
But for us, all’s well that ends well. All 3 families are on the flight from Fort Lauderdale to Cleveland after a 4 hour delay and will celebrate Rafi’s Bar Mitzvah together with us.
No thanks to CrowdStrike…

First of all, Mazal tov!
I was affected by the outage, but it wasn’t travel-related. As someone who works in IS, my company had hundreds, if not thousands, of failures of processes due to this. My company’s servers are still being updated with the workaround. It’s been quite a mess.
Thanks!
Yes
Was delayed on the tarmac for 4 hours in Muc to ewr (ua) but just made it!
Mazal Tov @Dan and Fam!
Government agencies were heavily affected by the outage.
Yes, I work for one and we were all sent home.
Mazal Tov on your son’s Bar Mitzvah! Thanks for all your wonderful deals, etc that you share with everyone!
Yup. Was in tampa for work with lots of colleagues going all over the county. I wanted to get home before shabbas. BH my AA flight was not delayed or cancelled. It was a miracle. Many of my colleagues (all non-Jewish or non-observant) who were with me were stuck until tomorrow!
CBP in JFK had everyone stand in line for hours, no global entry or CBP app people had any shortcut privileges.
Delta in JFK was a mess as well. Made it on my flight in time for shabbos.
Simple zelle payment failed to charles Schwab bank account
mazal tov, Dan and family. Wishing all of you continued nachat. Good Shabbos!
Yes. Unfortunately. 8 hours in airport. Was crazy.
Apologies in advance to all my cholov yisroel dudes and dudettes out there.

I had to pay in cash at one merchant. Those are 8 Chase points I will never get back 🙁
Does today’s woot off starting late count?
Mazel Tov!
(I actually miss paper boarding passes. I always saved the stubs.)
I still get paper boarding passes for that reason. 😀
Though there can be other benefits as well:

I still have one from Tower Air when we were delayed 9 hours in Bangor Maine on an Erev Shabbos (TEL-JFK)! It’s only fun when you look back, of course.
I save the boarding pass to my Apple wallet, just in case the app doesn’t work, like today.
Dan Mazel Tov and seems like my father is joining your family on the flight from FLL-CLE today.
Yup, had an Allegiant flight from Newark to Appleton WI with my 3 older kids to go celebrate my youngest son’s bar mitzvah (Mazal Tov to you as well) in Camp Moshava Wildrose. Allegiant customer service phone line was unreachable and their text message system said no agents were
available. Was able to get through to Appleton airport directly and found out the incoming flight to Newark was cancelled. Drove to Newark to find out if there was any more information on the ground there. Terminal B was a ghost town around 10:30am. Allegiant agent said there’s no planes or staff. Unfortunately no other options were available with any other airlines that would get us there before Shabbat. Sadly, this one doesn’t have a happy ending.
Shabbat shalom and Mazal Tov!
My husband flight from LAS to ORD this morning was canceled. No options to rebook online for today. Gold desk rebooked for tomorrow night on a red eye. I purchased two tickets that were around $500. One on United which is so far 4 hours delayed and hasn’t taken off and one on Southwest to MDW. Hoping he gets home tonight.
United flight boarded and closed the door. Then canceled flight because pilots timed out. He got home last night on AA flight. Paid $336. Gold desk was useless. Any way to recoup some of the money for flight, hotel, food, etc?
Mazel Tov.
In San Diego, our dental office’s X-ray software went down for the last 2 hours of patients, 7/18.
Also, lots of people couldn’t cross at Tijuana.
Mazel tov Dan!
You should see loads of Naaches!!
Btw just wondering without this outage would we ever know to celebrate with you??

Computers were down in Israel in all the healthcare centers and hospitals. Was at the dentist and they couldn’t take payments.
My MILs flight from LAS – ORD was delayed and later canceled Thursday night. She contacted me and when I checked the radar I saw that for some reason southwest was still taking off so she rebooked for 6am and got home
I couldn’t make a Chase bank transfer, so I missed my Discover credit card payment on time
They are aware of outages cud be they have a way to reverse especially if u have clean record
mazel tov dan mazel tov
Mazel tov Dan!
Our flight from Salt Lake City was cancelled and we ended up staying in town for Shabbos together with about another 100 yiden that had cancelled flights.
Rabbi Benny Zippel and his son Rabbi Avremi did an amazing job helping everyone with accommodations and meals, BH it was a beautiful Shabbos.
UA 9am ORD-LGA was delayed. Checked 6,7 and 8am flights and they all had seats (probably due to the app not allowing flight changes). Got to the airport, went to lounge for agent assistnace but their systems were down they were manually checking UA membership. Went directly to 6am gate (still delayed at 8am). Got switched to flight.
Flight departed 930
Basically switched flights and landed about the same time I would have
BH
Was on 6 am to ord. Ended up leaving at 11… so got to Chicago on time for shabbos. All is well that ends well
מזל טוב! תזכו לגדלו לחנכו ולחכמו בדרך התורה והיראה
Dan, what’s your shpiel about Southwest???
The only major airline not affected.
