Costco is making updates to their coronavirus policies.

  • Effective 5/4, everyone will need a mask covering their mouth and nose to enter the store. Exceptions are for infants under 2 and those with a medical condition preventing the use of a mask.
  • Effective 5/4, stores will return to their normal operating hours
  • Effective 5/4, stores will allow members ages 60 and older, and people with disabilities, to access the stores between 9am-10 a.m, Monday through Friday. Only members who meet this criteria will be able to shop during these hours. Guests will not be admitted.
  • Healthcare workers and first responders such as police officers, EMTs and firefighters can bypass the line to enter Costco by showing their ID. Only members who meet this criteria will be able to shop during these hours. Guests will not be admitted.
  • No more than two people to enter the warehouse with each membership card.

As more evidence comes out showing that the virus remains airborne for extended periods of time, I’d expect more businesses to start requiring masks to enter.

Luckily, they’ll sell you 10,000 masks for the low, low price of 19.95 right there at the door.

But they are out of stock!

In NJ (I don’t know about other places)
you are legally required to wear a mask when going in public for a few weeks already

Mauro

Same here in Chicago, no mask you can’t enter any business.

Home Depot near me requires a mask as well

The Costco shopper...

Wow! Finally, they will return to their regular operating hours!!
There is no point in cutting hours, the only difference it made was that while those few open hours, there was such a mess…!
Btw, in Nanuet, NY, they are enforcing masks for quite a while yet.
Thank you, Dan, for sharing that update!!

I agree. All the stores cutting hours just made everything worse. Just caused major jams (and panic)

The Costco shopper...

Yep, thanks for agreeing to me…

Btw, I have asked a home depot store-rep why they are doing it, and he told me that two reasons are behind that:

1. the workers should get a more easy schedule since lots of employees are sick, it causes the healthy ones to put in more hours.

2. they found that in the later noon hours the customers are more relaxed and taking their time, which causes people to gather up closer and fill the aisles etc., So they found essential to avoid that, and have their stores open only during reg business hours when the customers are more for real, like construction guys who are grabbing their few items and leave the store…

In either case… as it looks, it didn’t work out…

The Costco near me officially cut their hours 6:30 VS 8PM. But I think that was just to say the last person who gets in line to get in will be at 6:30, not that the store would actually close at 6:30. If you are in they will let you stay.

The Home Depot nearest me actually closed to customers. They are only having curbside pickup for online orders. Luckily there are two other home depots within two miles of that one, but the other HDs have lines snaking through the parking lot.

Do non-senior healthcare workers get to enter during senior hours as well?

Unless you have an N95 mask you are not protected from airborne virus. There are also multiple studies showing there is not any evidence that homemade masks will stop someone from emitting virus particles into the environment. The only way to prevent the spread is to allow the healthy population to develop a herd immunity to prevent spread to the vulnerable people. As a veterinarian I have been using this strategy against bovine and swine Coronavirus outbreaks my whole career. It’s a very effective strategy and has saved a countless number of animals. Costco’s strategy, sadly, will accomplish nothing.
