Update: DEAD! Don’t miss it if this becomes alive again. Sign up for deal notification alerts here!
Update #4: The 2K offer is now dead. The offer is back to 40,000 points for spending $3,000 in 3 months.
—————————————————————
Update #3, 08/22: I have received confirmation that the spending threshold will indeed climb back up to $3,000 later today.
If you want the 2K spending threshold act quickly!
—————————————————————
Update #2, 08/21: Quite frankly I have no idea what is going on, but Chase just let me know that the new Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card with the $2K spending requirement is being pulled tomorrow, August 22nd at about 3pm.
Take it for what it’s worth, your guess is as good as mine as to what is going on.
If you are going to match from an old card with a 3K spend threshold to the 2K spending threshold you’ll want to send off that secure message ASAP!
—————————————————————
Update, 08/20: Chase has actually improved the offer for the Sapphire card, you now only need to spend $2,000 within 3 months to receive the 40,000 bonus points!

Originally posted on 08/17:
On Monday , 08/20, my links for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Visa and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Mastercard are scheduled to stop working in order for the card offer to be updated.
Last time this happened the signup bonus went down from 50K to 40K. I’m not sure what is up this time, but:
If the offer improves: If you apply now and the offer gets better you can always send a secure message to be matched to the better offer. Matching to better Chase offers is allowed for 90 days.
If the offer gets worse: If you don’t apply now and the offer gets worse it’s very difficult to get them to match an expired offer retroactively.
-You get 40,000 points after spending $3,000 on the Chase Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card® Card . That’s a hefty signup bonus which will get you over halfway towards a free ticket to Israel and more than enough to fly to Hawaii for free or for 2 round-trip short-haul flights on United or over 4 round-trip short-haul flights booked by British Airways to fly on American.
-There is no annual fee for this card for the first year, but it’s $95 after the first year. Chase allows you to downgrade to other free cards like Freedom or the “non-preferred” version of the Sapphire card which has no annual fee. However be sure to transfer your points into miles before downgrading as cards with no annual fee do not allow transfers into miles!
-There is a 7% annual points dividend, so every purchase will earn at least 1.07 points.
-You receive 2.14 points per dollar (2 points x 1.07=2.14) for spending on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card on dining, airfare, hotels, car rentals, travel agencies, caterers, timeshares, trains, buses, taxis/limos, ferries, bridges, tolls, and parking. Book travel and hotels when logged into your account at Chase.com and you’ll get 3.21 (3 points x 1.07=3.21) points per dollar.
-There is no foreign exchange or foreign transaction fee on when you use this card abroad.
-The Sapphire World Mastercard includes CDW coverage with no deductible worldwide, even when you rent a car in Israel which every other type of credit card will not cover! I was able to signup for a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Visa, convert into a Mastercard, and then apply for a Visa again earning the signup points again as well.
So renting a car in Israel would have no foreign exchange fees, waived CDW insurance, and would earn 2.14 points per dollar!
-The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card isn’t your typical card. It’s made from metal to give it a great feel and has the numbers on the back of the card. When you call customer service a live US based rep answers right away with no phone tree maze to navigate.
-Chase Sapphire Ultimate Rewards points convert into British Airways (Oneworld), Korean (Skyteam), Southwest, and my favorite miles by leaps and bounds that never have any fuel surcharges, United (Star Alliance). They also convert into hotel points like Marriott, Priority Club, Ritz-Carlton, and another one of my favorite hotel point currencies, Hyatt. They also transfer to Amtrak if train travel is your thing. All points transfer instantly at a 1:1 ratio with no fees at all.
-You can transfer points into anyone’s Chase account or anyone’s airline or hotel mileage account. It’s best to transfer directly into someone else’s mileage account rather than into their Chase account.
-You can also use points for 1.25 cents each towards travel, but you’ll be able to do much better than that by transferring to airlines or hotels.
-A term I coined here last year that has caught on in the blogosphere is the Chase Trifecta. When you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, ( or the Ink Bold or Ink Plus card) along with Chase Freedom and a Chase checking account you can truly maximize your spending and rewards.
-For the Freedom/Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card/Chase Checking trifecta you can put all spending on dining and travel that is $10 or more as well as all overseas spending on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and then put all other spending on Freedom where you earn 10 points for every transaction, and 10% bonus points for every dollar spent, and 5 points per dollar in rotating categories. Then instead of cashing Freedom points out at a penny per point you can transfer Freedom Ultimate Rewards points to Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Ultimate Rewards points to transfer them into much more valuable airline or hotel points.

You are my hero.
Dan, you write “I was able to signup for a Sapphire Preferred Visa, convert into a Mastercard, and then apply for a Visa again earning the signup points again as well.”
So I have a twofold question, A. Does that mean that that if I already have the SP Visa, and I now use your link to apply for the SP WMC, that I won’t get the bonus?
Rather – B. You’re saying I should first transfer convert my SP Visa into a WMC and only then apply for a Visa again?
That’s how I understood your words..
I’d appreciate if you can please clarify. TYVM,IA!
– Confused.
wanted 2 know: does the ink have the same extensive 2x pnts on all travel like the sapphire,or only gas & hotels as advertised?
@dan…why did you have to convert the visa into a mc then apply for another visa…a 2bm wouldnt work with sapphire visa and mc?
Any other limited time lucrative CC offers which can recommend at this time (which you usually do at the end of the month) so that we can combine them into a spectacular App-o-rama together with the departing SP?
Thanks a ton!
Dan, Thank you for the post. In regards to downgrading from chase sapphire preferred to regular sapphire,once I downgrade (after transferring points), is that considered a complete different card? And if yes, how long do I have to wait to apply again for the preferred card to get the offer again (40k points).
I’ve called the saphire preffered reps and they have told me multiple times that the world mastercard saphire does not offer CDW in israel. Any suggestions?
“You can transfer points into anyone’s Chase account or anyone’s airline or hotel mileage account.” Can you transfer from one mileage account to another?
Are freedom points transferable to A spouse’s freedom account for further transfer into spouses sapphire preferred?
How do you do the math of 2 points*1.07=2.14? Where do you come up with the number 1.07 ?
I recently booked a flight with miles and paid a small fee my Sapphire Preferred card. I was told that even though I booked on miles and only paid the fee with this card, I was still eligible for benefits. I specifically used this card because they provide some benefits when a flight is delayed more than 12 hours (I believe it’s $300 per day for food and lodging but nothing for clothes). Unfortunately, my flight was cancelled due to weather and I was disappointed that they offered no coverage for this cancellation reason. They only cover if delayed more than 12 hours or cancelled to due illness or death of a close relative. That was a bummer. Have you experienced different results? What credit card would you recommend for better coverage in the case of delay or cancellation?
@Yisrael:
you get a 7% point dividend at the end of each year – so Dan is figuring that into the calc
@Yisrael: they give you a 7% dividend at the end of the year, which makes 100,000 points into 107,000 points.
and then he makes another point;
chase doubles your points when you spend on the following and therefor your year end dividend doubles.
you receive 2.14 points per dollar (2 points x 1.07=2.14) for spending on the Sapphire Preferred card on dining, airfare, hotels, car rentals, travel agencies, caterers, timeshares, trains, buses, taxis/limos, ferries, bridges, tolls, and parking. Book travel and hotels when logged into your account at Chase.com and you’ll get 3.21 (3 points x 1.07=3.21) points per dollar.
Dan,
I have the trifecta including sapphire preffered visa. My ink bold says world mastercard on the back. Should i switch my sapphire preffered to mastercard or is the ink bold enough in terms of rental coverage internationally? thanks in advance
@steve:
I think Ink Bold insurance requires a business rental.
Is there any other card that covers in israel besides this?
please dont link to the forums 😉
Dan i thought the link to world matercard sapphire preferred was cancelled a couple months ago. In fact when i called chase they said they do not offer the mastercad version anymore on a direct application
@shua:
Citi world mastercards should as well but they have a foreign exchange fee and don’t have 2.14 points per dollar..
@Davidd:
Still worked as of last week for me.
Might be going away completely after this Sunday.
Can you explain what you mean by? “Then instead of cashing Freedom points out at a penny per point you can transfer Freedom Ultimate Rewards points to Sapphire Preferred Ultimate Rewards points to transfer them into much more valuable airline or hotel points.”
I called Chase and they have no idea what I am talking about, they told me the Ultimate reward points are the exact same with both cards. Also, How do I transfer points from one card to the other?
Thank you
Chase Checking isn’t available in my zip code nor in the zip of any of my family members 🙁
Any idea on how I can get the checking account even though I’m out of market?
@mendel:
Lol…never ever believe what an underpaid phone rep tells you 😉
Freedom can’t transfer to miles, Sapphire preferred can.
You can transfer between cards when logged in at chase.com in Ultimate Rewards.
@Doug:
Next time you’re in a city with a chase bank signup there?
Is there any CC that covers LIABILITY on car rentals?
@Machzik Torah:
No
This Chase Trifecta you speak of – what does one need to have a chase checking account for? Why can’t one just convert the points from the chase freedom to the chase preferred to get the better value for the points? Thanks
You said in the post:
“It’s best to transfer directly into someone else’s mileage account rather than into their Chase account.”
Why is that? Wouldn’t transferring into their Chase account maintain the flexibility of the points? But if you transfer to their mileage account, they are locked into that airline and that account.
@awass:
That gives you 10 points plus 10% bonus points every time you use your Freedom card.
@Matityahu:
Chase has shut down people’s credit cards for making transfers like that to cards not at your address.
Is there away to avoided the $12 monthly fee without having a daily balance of $1500 in your chase bank account?
Thank you
@mendel you can have 5 debit card transactions or a $500 direct deposit. Direct deposits can be done with USAA
@Ben: @Ben: thanks for the responce. Are you sure that the 5 deposit idea works? Its seems like that was the old card. Also does isaac mean?
Thanks
i think most israeli rental companies require anyone not taking CDW from them, to take 3pl or tpl (third party liablity) which is about the same price as what they charge for their CDW (but their CDW has a deductible)
I applied and received a “Decision pending”. Do I just wait or is there something else I can do?
@Stuart: Call the Chase Recon line.
@sky121: Does the same go for the ink bold?
Great stuff Dan. What are the differences in benefits b/w the sapphire preferred Mastercard and Visa? was going to switch, but i’m afraid i’ll lose the great travel insurance (delayed bags etc.) benefits fromt he Visa Sig Sapphire Preferred.
@moshe:
LI costs less than CDW+LI.
And the cdw from the companies has a large deductible the sapphire wmc does not.
@shiframeir:
The other benefits should be the same.
dan,
any update on what the changes are?
dan,
do you get the bonus travel bonus points when you book on expedia, hotwire etc?
@dave:
You would get 2.14 points per dollar.
any update on changes to sapphire preffered ?
No change as of 2:05 pm (EST)
update?
dan, this is a bit unrelated but i booked my parents for bussness first on united to leave tonight to rome and they wont do a kosher meal any suggestions
hey dan i got the card 3 weeks ago, do they have to match the offer for me?
hey dan is the card that they are offering now a visa or mc? cuz i have a visa and want to apply for a mc thanks
@ed:
Send them a secure message.
@ben:
The current offer is for the Visa.
You can still use the Mastercard link while it works though.
Can you still get the signup bonus points if you previously had a Sapphire Preferred and subsequently cancelled it? The signup details say that the bonus is only for new cardholders?
Thank you Dan. Just used your link to apply for the card.
Question: How do I upgrade from the Visa to the Mastercard?
Question 2: How do I get additional points with my checking acct / Freedom card? I’m not clear how this is done.
Thanks.
i was in bank last week n the rep. offered me the sapphire with the 40,000 bonus points n $2,000 spending when online was still $3,000 spending
i just signed up for sp mastercard last week..would i need to still spend 3,000 or do i automatically get upgraded to only needing to spend 2000?
thanks
@Dan so I just applied for this before the offer, can I get them to match the 2k spending as opposed to the 3k? Does it make a difference?
Any Special treatment in airports with The Saphaire Card??
i called up the number on back of sapphire preffered and asked them to match the last offer of 50,000 points and they gave me the 10000 points even before i spent the 2k
@k:
Ditto for me – once i get the card i’ll call and ask…no big deal really, that’s what amazon payments are for:-)
@Dan:
Mu husband and I have a joint Chase checking account. I have the Sapphire Preferred. If my husband opens a Freedom card – would we be able to transfer his Freedom points to my Sapphire UR account?
@jacob:
It’s not automatic.
@dave:
Nice!
@Trifecta:
Yes.
dan,
what is the best way to book jfk to salt lake city for this winter with miles i have amex, starwoods, and ultimate rewards.
Thanks
Hey Dan,
Would you recommend the Chase Trifecta or the Starwoods card for my best point value?
THanks
Can you still get the signup bonus points if you previously had a Sapphire Preferred and subsequently cancelled it?
hmm… i got this card last week
do i still need to hit the old spending reqs, or the new ones ?
Dave–how did you do that? Wasn’t that offer a while back? I just signed up for the preferred before the change to 2k yesterday…you think I can ask for the additional 10,000 from their last offer?
Chase is not matching the offer because they are saying they can’t they are saying it is a third party offer I signed up on Sunday any suggestions Dan?
How do I send a secure message? Also I was only accepted today. Do you think I have to spend 2000 or 3000? Can I purchase something and then return it?
@everyone
What’s the big deal? Amazon payments covers all the spending requirements you need for free!!!
Can you sign up again and still get the signup bonus points if you previously had a Sapphire Preferred and subsequently cancelled it?
Here was my reply BH i will reach the new limit very shortly and get my points hopefully in time to use them for yom tov.

Dan, is the 40,000 bonus for each credit card account that is opened? Or if I request 2 cards in the same account can I get 80,000 points?
Dan: Signed up for the Sapphire about a month ago, got $3,000/ 3 months promotion, sent request for $2,000/ 3 months via secure message and got matched to the new offer! Thanks so much!
@Ally: i just called the number on back and asked to honor previosu offer they said they will get back to me and the next day they put points in my account
@dan What other 2 cards would you recommend for a 3bm signup now
Hey Dan, I see that you posted that the spend requirement will go back up to $3k today. Did you verify that that will be the only change, or is it possible that they will also change the amount of points rewarded or some other factor?
@Josh:
Depends what you have.
If you don’t have Freedom yet, that’s one of the best cards out there for spending and it’s free:
http://dansdeals.com/go/freedom200
Do you have Hyatt yet, it’s pretty awesome:
http://dansdeals.com/go/hyatt
@BEM684:
All I know is it will go up to 3K.
Talk about a limited time offer!
Well, I’m glad I get your twitter txt messages. I put in an SM to be matched to the $2k offer less than 20 minutes ago and got matched within 5 minutes.
@BEM684:
Congrats!
Is it possible to get the Master Card version at 2K?
@Dan:
There is no 2K MC link.
Dan i have a quick question. How do you keep track of all your Credit cards do you have an excel sheet or a software??
thank you
@Dan:
Woah I didn’t even notice that there’s no MC link! I have the MC version and was told that I was matched!
@Avi:
A spreadsheet is always a good idea.
@BEM684:
Well done indeed!
@Dan Just got approved, do you still think its worth signing up for the hyatt one
@Dan: Dan, Speaking of the Hyatt card-I got a trial for Hyatt Diamond and am contemplating applying for it and wanted to know:
(1) if the free suites will remain in my account even after the Diamond Trial expires next month?
(2) if I applied for and was approved, after some back and forth with Chase, for 4 chase personal cards in the last few months-continental, united, freedom and saphire cards, would an application for 1 or 2 (MB trick) more cards, i.e., Hyatt & … result in auto rejections. My last two applications were in April 2012 and the two previous applications were in March?
Thanks for your help.
@Josh:
Sure, apps on the same day generally don’t cause additional pulls.
@Joe:
Yes, the free suite nights are good for 12-13 months after you spend $1 on the card.
You may need to close an older card to get approved but it should be doable.
@dan
ok i send you an email with two site i found with speadsheets if you can take a look at them and let me know what you think.
thank you
dan any way they will match the 2k, by sending a pm, if i sign up too late and only get the 3k ??
@mike:
Doubtful, but anything is possible.
@Avi: avi could u send me as well that spreadsheet ?
@mike
yes i can send them what is your email address??
@Dan
if you want you should download it and ether make a post and put them so you can share with all your visitors. Let me know if you got the emails and get back to me.
thank you
i already have the Chase Sapphire Preferred how can i get this deal
dan,
what is the best way to book jfk to salt lake city for this winter with miles? i have amex, starwoods, and ultimate rewards.
Thanks
dan,
my wife has an additional card for my starwoods account, i just signed her up for her own card for the extra bonus,
i should keep the additional card for $25 saturday and twitter synced with amex? i could get it on all 3 cards even though 2 are in her name ?
What else should i apply for with this card?
I already have Freedom and Bold
Prefer something with a lower spending….
If you already have a Sapphire Preferred Visa and you apply again and get another 40,000 points?
Thank you
@Yaakov:
@dave:
Check out the forums.
@dave:
As long as they have different numbers you get all the promotions.
@3BM:
Have a Hyatt card yet? Just $1 spend can get you 2 free nights at any Hyatt worldwide (even ones that can go for $1,000/night) with no blackouts or capacity controls plus elite status, free internet on all stays and a free night every year you keep the card.
@Fan Of Dan!:
If you get approved you should.
I am sorry I meant to ask is there two types of cards in the personal side so if you have one you can apply for the other one. Or is there a business card?
@Dan: dan,
which forum would answer my question on which miles to use to get to salt lake city?
2K Visa: http://www.dansdeals.com/go/Sapphire40K
3K Mastercard:
http://www.dansdeals.com/go/SapphireWMC/
I have both.
DEAD!
I did the sapphire preferred already. Can my father open this card and then transfer the points to either my account or united account? Or none
@mo:
Yup.
@yaakov:
Yes.
I just received my SP Master card today, sent Chase a secure message and got matched to 2k spending in 20 minutes.
both? And how do I do I do it?
@Dan: dan,
which forum would answer my question on which miles to use to get to salt lake city?
Hi Dan did you every check the email i send you my email is coolal500@gmail.com
thank you
looks like its back up to 3000
shoots, how do i always miss the deal? back at 3k! i’m going to hold out another few days maybe it will go back to 50k with the added spending requirement!
a)I applied right before the first change and haven’t been approved yet. Do you think I’ll be able to secure message to match the 2K spending instead of the 3K?
b)My southwest card is soon having an anniversary. Should I upgrade to the premier southwest at an additional $30 fee in order to get the additional 3000 mile bonus? Would it work?
Dan please specify more how can i get this new offer when i already have the Sapphire for 6 months
@dan- is the 7% annual dividend on the sapphire card compounded? Meaning, if I have 100k in points end of year one. It becomes 107k. Would they give at the end of the next year 7% on the 107k points or rather just on new points accrued that year? Thanks!
