Update: Today is the final day for Q1 spending!

Chase Freedom Flex and Freedom are excellent no annual fee cards thanks to their quarterly 5% categories. While the rewards are marketed as 5% cash back, you’ll actually get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent which can be worth much more than 5% cash.

If you max out the $1,500 in bonus spending per quarter you will earn at least 30,000 Ultimate Rewards points over the course of a year (7,500 points per quarter at 5 points per dollar spent) per Freedom card.

You can register now for 2025 Q2 spending which will be valid 4/1-6/30 at:

  • Amazon.com
    • The Amazon.com category includes purchases made at Amazon.com (including digital downloads, Amazon.com Gift Cards, Amazon Fresh orders, Amazon Prime subscriptions, and items sold by third-party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace) and Whole Foods Market (including physical Whole Foods Market and Whole Foods Market 365 stores, and the website accessible at www.wholefoodsmarket.com
  • Select streaming services
    • Services include Apple Music, Apple TV, Disney+, ESPN+, Fubo TV, Max, Hulu, Netflix, Pandora, Paramount+, Peacock, Showtime, SiriusXM, Sling, Spotify, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV and Vudu.

You still can finish Q1 spending through 3/31 at:

  • Grocery Stores (excluding Walmart and Target)
  • Fitness Clubs & Gym Memberships
  • Hair, Nails & Spa Services
  • Norwegian Cruise Lines
  • Tax Preparation
  • Insurance

You can track your Freedom bonus spending here.

The value of the points will be based on where you use them, but if you use those points for a trip worth where they are worth 2 cents each then you’ll have effectively earned 10% back on those “5 point categories.” The sky is the limit of the value of airline miles as they aren’t tied to the cost of a ticket. That’s good for people in the know and bad for those who are not. 1 mile can be worth 0.25 cents or it can be worth 25 cents, it all just depends on how you use them!

Where will you make your Q1 and Q2 purchases?

I’ll wait until ~6/1 to see what the surprise category is since it’ll be no worse than Q2 options.

Any idea if you can pay a Geico bill before the renewal invoice comes out? Renewal is end of April but want to pay up on my freedom; unsure if they let balances sit on the account before they create your statement

David R

You can’t. Here’s a risky idea that might work for you. Increase your coverage to cause a payment to be due and make a payment, then immediately reduce your coverage to what it was.
Here’s another idea if you’re near a Stop & Shop store. (This is what I did.) Buy $500 Vanilla Visa gift cards before Thursday evening this week. Buy however many you need to reach or approach the $1500 quarterly limit. If you scan your Stop & Shop card, you’ll get 1000 GO points for each $500 card, which gives you a $1 per gallon discount at Shell gas stations for up to a 20 gallon purchase. If you buy enough gallons, the value of this discount far exceeds the fee that you pay for the Vanilla Visa cards. You can then use these cards to pay GEICO when they bill you in April.

Anom

Thanks for that.

Alternatively, are giftcards at S&S eligible for 5% supermarket spend? Either way I’ll watch and see if they get the renewal out before end of the month – sometimes it’s a little over a month before.

David R

Yes, that is why I suggested it.

Update – speaking of which! My renewal bill just came though. ~40 before renewal date

Any accounting firm charge will work for the taxes category?

Be aware, chase was inconsistently crediting grocery store purchases throughout march. Same stores same locations; clearly grocery category; Safeway, Aldi. might be related to level 2 info….. even if they would let me call and complain, not worth waiting on hold and fighting for 10-$20 worth of points.

I find it interesting that Chase does a 5% bonus category of Amazon when Amazon has a chase branded card which gets 5% (or more) on all Amazon purchases.
