—————————————————————————————————————-
Earlier this year AMEX added several new benefits to the Premier Rewards Gold Card.
-The card now qualifies for a $100 airline fee credit per calendar year. That means in your first cardmember year you can get $200 back with $100 in 2015 and $100 in 2016. Officially these are intended to be used for bag fees, seat upgrades, and lounge passes/memberships. However they also work for items like $100 American Airlines gift cards or $100 United gift registry contributions. You can even get free gift cards for stores like Amazon, BuyBuyBaby, or Gap via the iPhone or Android version of MileagePlusX, so that means $200 of free gift cards (plus bonus miles) to those stores in your first cardmembership year.
You can register for the airline of your choice by registering here.
-The card no longer charges a foreign transaction fee.
-The card gives now gives double points at restaurants in addition to double points on gas and groceries in the US and triple points on airfare.
-The ability to earn a bonus 15K points for spending $30K was supposed to end last year, but cardholders were sent a notice on their statement that it was extended through 2015. That’s pretty sweet if you can hack it, as it bumps the effective earn rates of the double point categories to 3x and the triple point category to 4.5x.
-Effective 11/15 purchases made on this card will receive the same treatment as those made on the The Platinum Card® from American Express.
Namely, if you lose an item purchased within the past 90 days, AMEX will refund the price you paid or they will replace the item. Previously only stolen or damaged items were covered under this plan and proof of theft or damage was required.
-Currently only items up to $1,000 qualify for purchase protection, but effective 11/15 items up to $10,000 will now be covered under the purchase protection plan. If you purchase an item that cost up to $10,000 on or after 11/15 and lose, damage, or have it stolen from you, it will be covered.
You can read about the terms and excluded items here.
AMEX purchase protections are awesome and are a huge item to factor in the equation when you are deciding which credit card to use for a purchase. If I’m buying a laptop I’ll pass on the 5 points per dollar I might earn on another card, just so I have AMEX purchase and warranty protections.
You can add 5 free additional Gold card users which also qualify for AMEX offers and protections on purchases.
The card does have a $195 annual fee, which is waived for the first year. The $100 per calendar year airline fee credit makes that fee very palatable considering the generous point bonus categories, lack of foreign transaction fees, and the new premium purchase protections.

Dan, is the airline fee credit also for Authorised Users?
@Levi:
Only in your dreams 😀
“The ability to earn a bonus 15K points for spending $30K was supposed to end last year, but was extended to end at the end of 2015.”
Had to apply before a certain date to qualify though? Got this card end of Jan and I have surpassed this amount but now bonus.
Could you please explain in detail how to get the 100 dollar amazon gift card. tx
Dan,
I have the Amex Business Gold. Not a premier. Are there any airline credits on it?
Dan, can you please explain the Mileage Plus X and getting the 100$ amazon gift card?
@ah:
Good question.
@david:
@AA:
Just register via the link in the post for United and buy anything up to $100 via the app linked to in the post.
@moshe:
No.
“The ability to earn a bonus 15K points for spending $30K was supposed to end last year, but was extended to end at the end of 2015.” Have you confirmed this?
why aren’t they adding this benefit to the BRG?
@dan how long after purchase is the purchase protection valid?
I used it on an airline and didn’t need to register with that airline when I used the onboard WIFI. I was credited soon after the flight.
Dan, I thought they stopped reimbursing gift card purchases. Is it active again?
I have Platinum $200 credit available – I can register it for United & then buy a $100 amazon gift card through Mileage plus x app & it shows as a united Misc charge?
A game changer – that is practically straight cash!
Please confirm.
Thanks,
I just go in the app to pay now by amazon put in $100 and select pay WIth new card amex platinum added in?
@Dan: 🙂
I guess I do a $5 charge and see how it posts? But then I am locked in to United.
The Citi AA Platinum Select card is stopping to charge foreign transaction fees. (I don’t know what date.)
is the $100 American Airlines gift cards or $100 United gift registry contributions will count towards any minimum 3 month spent requirement ??
TIA
@Kira:
I got it myself:

@mh:
Confirmed.
Not a PGGM guy?
@Yaakov:
Lame card, better off spending on Starwood if you want AA miles.
@Love dans:
They should count.
Everyone has their limits – no judging but it’s not my style.
@Mh:
That’s what I was assuming, enjoy the Amazon GCs!
@Dan:
Awesome. Do you have to wait for a billing period to show your 15k bonus pts?
@Kira:
It posted within a week of the charges for me, before the billing statement closed.
Does the airline credit have to be added before you fly or can you request the credit any time?
@Airline credit:
Needs to be selected before the charge is made.
@dan:
I can get a $100 gift card to any store offered in the app or just the online ones?
@michael:
Any.
@Dan: but I would have had to register my card to get the $100 credit from united before purchasing the gift card. Correct?
just tried the GC..I hope it works!
bought a Amazon GC from the app..shows up as Mileageplus X charge in pending activities.
@giftcard:
@Dan: does this sound right to you? is it supposed to show up as MileagePlus X in our statements?
if i already registered it to Southwest, can I get a southwest GC online? Thanks.
@Anonymous:
Yes.
@giftcard:
Normal.
@andrei:
Yes.
Or you can call/chat to switch to another airline.
@Dan, question is when did you open your PRG? I think card had to be opened before a certain date for the 15k bonus but haven’t seen anything concrete about it.
What’s the benefit of the platinum card over the gold card once they added the lost coverage?
Amazon gift card should wirk for citi prestige credit ?
There better be some Platinum upgrades in the pipeline…
Dan can I use the same linked app to purchase amazon gift card with my platinum card offer of 200$ back annually ?
Do you think if we charge 250 Amazon GC to prestige card from citi the $250 airline credit will post?
wells fargo propel also has $100 credit – wonder if they all post the same citi, wells fargo, & amex platinum-PRG as Airline charge?
@Dan
@Moshe
I have an AMEX Business Gold Card (non-premier) and I just got off the phone with the AMEX rep and she informed me that this card has the $100 airline credit as well as do all of the authorized users.
Dan,
If I had the PRG and downgraded the card to Zync, will Amex consider it as if I still have my PRG card and therefore consider me ineligible for the bonus, since I never closed the actual PRG card and still have it, albeit in another form?
Thanks.
It showed up as MPX*AMAZON.COM Am I still going to get the credit? How long does it take?
Thanks,
Sam
@Sam: same here…shows up as MPX*AMAZON.COM.
@Dan: any thoughts?
Dan are the last few questions something to take in mind? Pls answer.
Already answered in comment 33.
@Dan: Dan, may I know when you got this AMEX PRG card? Seems there is a cutoff date of the benefit. Thanks.
Dan the calculation is misleading (most probably a mistake, 15k for 30k spending doesn’t make 4.5X for triple points categories, say you spend 30k on airfare you would get 105k, 4.5x would be 135k.
This is actually 3.5k and not so profitable for all that spending, especially not as the 50k bonus for 20k spending on the BA card.
how long does it take to get the credit?
