Status From Your Couch:
Delta SkyMiles Reserve, Delta Reserve Business, Delta SkyMiles Platinum, and Delta Platinum Business cardholders will receive an annual MQD Headstart of 2,500 MQDs per card, starting on 2/1/24.
You can only earn the MQD headstart once for each card type, so having 2 of the same exact card won’t help to get more MQDs, but you can earn the bonus 4 times annually if you have all 4 eligible card types.
That means Delta has gone from making it very difficult to earn status from their credit cards to making it easier than with any other airline!
If you have 2 of those eligible cards, you’ll get 5,000 MQDs, good for Silver status through 1/31/26. The annual fee on the Platinum cards is $350, so you would be paying $700 in annual fees for those 5,000 in MQDs. Each of those cards comes with a Global Entry/PreCheck credit, a domestic main cabin round-trip companion certificate upon card renewal, and 1 MQD per $20 spent.
If you have all 4 of those eligible cards, you’ll get 10,000 MQDs, good for Gold status through 1/31/26. The annual fee on the Platinum cards is $350 and the annual fee on the Reserve cards is $650, so you would be paying $2,000 in annual fees for those 10,000 in MQDs. Each of those Reserve cards comes with a Global Entry/PreCheck credit and a domestic First class, comfort, or main cabin round-trip companion certificate upon card renewal. They also each come with 15 annual lounge visits starting in 2025 (unlimited in 2024), Centurion lounge access, upgrade priority, and 1 MQD per $10 spent.
If you have all 4 cards and want Platinum status, you’d have to earn an additional 5,000 MQDs on flights, spend $50,000 on the Reserve cards, or a combination thereof.
If you have all 4 cards and want Diamond status, you’d have to earn an additional 18,000 MQDs on flights, spend $180,000 on the Reserve cards, or a combination thereof.
You can read about Delta status benefits here.
It’s worth noting that AMEX generally only allows someone to have 5 credit cards, so this strategy would take up most of the available slots. However, cards like the AMEX Business Platinum card, AMEX Business Gold Card, AMEX Consumer Gold, and AMEX Consumer Platinum cards do not count towards that limit of 5 credit cards.
Existing cardholders will receive the headstart within 6-8 weeks of 2/1 annually.
New cardholders and upgrading cardholders will be eligible for the bonus as well, within 6-8 weeks of opening or upgrading their card.
Spend for status
- If you want top-tier Diamond status you’ll need to earn 28,000 MQDs.
- If you want Platinum status you’ll need to earn 15,000 MQDs.
- If you want Gold status you’ll need to earn 10,000 MQDs.
- If you want Silver status you’ll need to earn 5,000 MQDs.
You can earn those by spending on the Platinum (1 MQD per $20 spent) or Reserve cards (1 MQD per $10 spent), plus the 2,500 in MQDs that each Platinum or Reserve card gives annually, plus spending on Delta flights.
Spend Threshold:
If you need a little help to meet the threshold, you can pay your federal taxes for a 1.82% fee). If you overpay your taxes you can request a refund or apply it to your next year’s taxes.
My local natural gas company allows me to prepay up to $1,000 per transaction on a credit card for a $1.65 flat fee. That’s a great way to earn miles and help meet a spend threshold. My electricity supplier allows me to pay with a credit card for free as long as I am enrolled in autopay.
American Express benefits:
The cards carry American Express’ awesome top-notch protections that are light-years better than any other banks. Most other banks always look for a way to get out, but that’s not the case with American Express.
Benefits include warranty coverage, dispute resolution, car rental insurance worldwide-including in Israel, purchase protection, and more. The Reserve card also comes with lost item and return protection.
AMEX cards offer free Shoprunner membership for 2nd day free shipping and returns from dozens of stores.
See this post to see just how amazing some of the AMEX protections can be.
Best Uses Of Delta Miles:
Delta doesn’t publish award charts anymore as they feel than an uneducated customer is their best customer. That’s beyond frustrating.
They don’t charge a close-in award fee, but it can be tough to find saver award space available within 3 weeks.
Delta miles are not my favorite mileage currency by a long shot, but there are still plenty of good uses of Delta miles. Plus, Delta miles never expire.
Cardholders can always use miles at a value of 1 cent each, though that’s a poor value for miles.
You can now use Delta miles to fly on El Al.
Delta has also lowered the cost of some domestic saver basic economy awards from a flat 12.5K to as low as 4.5K, depending on the route.
Cardholders will pay just 3,800 miles after the 15% discount:
They also run flash sales. I flew to Amsterdam for just 49K Delta miles each way in Delta Suites:
You can read the Amsterdam trip report and my thoughts on Delta A350 suites here.
If you actually want to collect Delta miles you’ll do better spending on the The Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card from American Express which earns 2 points per dollar everywhere. Plus you can transfer those points to other airlines or Delta on demand as you need them.
However the MQD bonuses can make it worth spending on the Delta Platinum/Reserve cards if you are trying to qualify for elite status. And just having those cards can earn you elite status.
Dan’s Quick Thoughts:
AMEX annual fees seem to continue to creep up, in exchange for benefits that may or may not work out for everyone.
The Gold cards climb from a reasonable $95 to a $150 annual fee. For that, you’ll get a $100 consumer card or $150 business card credit for Delta Stays and a $200 flight credit if you spend $10K on the card annually. Some people may come out ahead, especially if they spend exactly $10K. If you can use the Delta Stays credit, you can come out ahead of the price hike. Otherwise, this card may not be worth the higher fee.
On the Platinum cards, if you dine out at Resy restaurants and use rideshares, you should be able to get $240 value out of the $100 increase in annual fee, which is a decent trade. Plus, the companion certificate is far more valuable than it used to be as you can now use it for Hawaii, the Caribbean, and more. You’ll also now get 2,500 headstart MQDs and can earn 1 MQD per $20 spent. And you’ll get a $150-$200 Delta Stays credit. The ability to get upgraded without status is also a nice new perk. But if you don’t use any of those services, you may just see this as a $100 price hike. Overall, I’d say this card looks better than it used to!
On the Reserve cards, if you dine out at Resy restaurants and use rideshares, you should be able to get $360 value out of the $100 increase in annual fee, which is a great deal. Plus, the companion certificate is far more valuable than it used to be as you can now use it for Hawaii, the Caribbean, and more. You’ll also now get 2,500 headstart MQDs and can earn 1 MQD per $10 spent. And you’ll get a $200-$250 Delta Stays credit. But if you don’t use those services, you may just see this as a $100 price hike. Overall, most people should come out ahead thanks to these changes.
If just hold the Gold card for free bag fees and 15% award discount, you may have to think twice about renewing. If you already have the Platinum or Reserve card and you use Resy and/or rideshares, you’ll probably come out ahead with these changes. And if you’ll use the Delta Stays credit, you’ll come out ahead on any of these changes.

Many.
With the Amex Delta gold free luggage benefit, does that mean on international flights (that one piece of luggage is automatically included) you get a second one free?
No. But you do get a free bag on international Basic economy, which normally doesn’t include checked bags.
No

Technically, yes, but it’s not really lifetime.
You can apply and if you don’t qualify it will allow you to cancel the application before it’s submitted.

Dan, I just tried to sign up and got a message I can be approved for the card but not for the welcome offer.
I’ve got a clean record and only have 1 Amex card from 2018.
What would be a reason for this and how can I get past it?
Thanks
Do you use that AMEX card?
No, i have not been using it in years. Is there still a way I’d be eligible?
Can this be explained?
you are not eligible to receive the welcome offer. In determining eligibility, we considered your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors.
