Update #1-2:00pm: United has pulled the PIT-DFW fare, so the clock is now ticking(I’d estimate about 6 more hours) if you want to buy the $113 AA fare from PIT-DEN!
This is a classic example of a hub war retaliation.
At 12:30pm yesterday, the fare analysts over at United decide to file a $113+(approx. $30-$40 in taxes) Round trip fare from Pittsburgh to Dallas/Ft. Worth to boost traffic on that route.
AA, which operates a mega-hub out of DFW, doesn’t miss a beat and at the next airfare filing (8:30pm) filed a $113 airfare from PIT to Denver, which just happens to be a mega-hub for United…
Who gains from all this fighting? The consumer of course!
Of note: Hub war fares rarely stick around for too long, so buy now!(Or at least hold now, as both AA and UA offer hold options right on their websites!)
Both fares are valid from now through the end of schedule, and require 3 weeks advance booking, and 2 nights minimum stay:
