LCC Roundup #4-ATA Airlines

7

Please Note:I do not have first-hand experience on ATA or on any of the remaining LCC’s, so what follows is only what my research came up with, and not with the help of first-hand experiences as with the Southwest, Jetblue, and Airtran articles…

What you need to know:
Website: www.ata.com
Phone Number: 1-800-435-9282
Main Airports Served:
MDW(Chicago-Midway), HNL(Honolulu)

Mileage program details:
Name: ATA Travel Awards
Website: www.ata.com/awards
Earning Details: Earn 250 point for each one-way coach ticket. Earn 500 for each one-way business ticket. Earn 250 additional points per one-way if booked online.
Points Expiration: Points expire 12 months after earned.

Award Ticket Expiration: 1 Year from date of issue.
Capacity Controlled: Yes
Blackout Dates: No
Elite Status: Don’t waste your time. Earn 15,000 points from flying, and get priority boarding…
Upgrades: Sometimes available at the gate.
Notable:You can receive Southwest Rapid Reward credits instead of ATA points upon request.
ATA Travel Awards: 1.5 stars/5 stars.

Co-Branded Credit Card: None.

What you may not know:
-Changes to flights are $50 plus any difference in fare.
-ATA, often confused for the profitable Airtran, has emerged from bankruptcy largely due to its’ profitable codeshare agreement with Southwest.
-In bankruptcy ATA axed most of its’ flights, as well as it’s Indianapolis hub.
-ATA now flies primarily to cities that Southwest doesn’t want to go themselves, such as New York and Honolulu, so that Southwest can sell flights to these destinations on southwest.com through codesharing.
-ATA also offers service to Maui and Hilo from the US mainland, and is in fact the only carrier that currently provides nonstop service from the mainland to Hilo.

-Standby is free ONLY on the flight immediately preceding your flight, otherwise same-day confirmed changes are $25.

-Jetblue rarely bumps people off flights because it is the only US carrier that has a policy to not “oversell” flights, a practice followed by other airlines to compensate for no-shows.
-Jetblue allows each of the 2 free checked luggage pieces to be up to 70 pounds!
-Jetblue fares are not offered on most 3rd party sites (Orbitz, Expedia, etc.)

Application Linky

What you may not know:
-Southwest is one of the only airlines that does not charge any penalties for cancelling a non-refundable ticket, the entire value of the ticket you bought can be used for any other other ticket within 1 year of the date of purchase!
-Southwest is one of the only carriers that do not offer free standby, if you want to go on an earlier flight even that same day you must upgrade your ticket to an expensive fully-refundable ticket. However if you miss your flight by less than 2 hours, then you are eligible for free standby on a later flight.
-Southwest allows you to check 3 bags under the plane for free!
-Southwest has typically avoided large congested airports (i.e. Boston, New York City, Dallas/Ft. Worth) as part of their strategy to keep their planes on the ground for the least amount of time possible.
-Southwest was the original LCC, and currently flies more passengers domestically than ANY other airline!
-Southwest only flies Boeing 737 aircraft.
-Southwest does not fly a single red-eye flight!
-Southwest only offers coach seating.
-Southwest only flies in the Continental US.
-Southwest and ATA are the only LCC’s that have a codesharing program between them, allowing the accrual of mileage on either airline of your choice.
-Southwest offers their lowest fares via the downloadable program, “Ding,” named so for the ding emitted by your computer twice daily when they load new specials.
-Southwest fares are not offered on any 3rd party sites (Orbitz, Expedia, etc.)
-Southwest is the only carrier that doesn’t offer assigned seating, instead they assign you to one of 3 groups depending on what time you check-in, so it’s important to check-in online as soon as you’re allowed to! Didn’t get a “Group A” boarding pass? You may want to check out this site: www.boardfast.blogspot.com
-Southwest is currently testing assigned seating for select flights departing from SAN(San Diego).
-Southwest is the only major carrier to record a profit in every quarter since 9/11.

Airlines Not Found On Orbitz?

1

BZ asked in a comment,
“Can you make a post about which airlines are not searched by orbitz, expedia? “
I’ll give a shot at it!
I find that the “Big 6” legacy carriers (By size: American, United, Delta, Continental, Northwest, and USAirways) are generally well represented by Orbitz, Expedia, and Kayak, etc.

In general a site like Orbitz will be about $6 higher than buying directly from the airline website itself, although on occasion orbitz may be cheaper than the airline’s own website, so if for nothing else, it’s a good place to start checking airfares.

This does not hold true however for the LCC’s (low-cost carriers)
At best, a site like Orbitz will display the LCC’s fare, however even when the airline is displayed it is often much cheaper to buy it at the airline’s own site.

Over the next couple of days I’ll focus on handicapping the LCC marketplace.

Hot! Newark To Maui (Or Vice Versa) On Delta For $340+!

3

Update: 08/08 12:00 pm: Deal is dead!
Booking Linky
Yes, I know this is nothing compared to the famous $87 Airfare+Hotel deal, but then again that was from Los Angeles, and this is from New York, where the average Hawaii ticket is over $600…
The deal is available through the end of Delta’s schedule, but the tricky part is finding available seats for this ticket.
The deal is only valid when booking in the “T” fare class, and only when going to Hawaii via Salt Lake City.
So how do you know when this is available?
The best way is via another “Neat Travel Site” that I haven’t posted here yet, the Travel and Transport Class Availability site.
Instructions:
Using the Travel and Transport Class Availability site, check from EWR(Newark) to OGG(Maui) on Delta on your preferred dates.
When checking from EWR to OGG on 08/15 to 08/23 for example, I see that there are 9 seats in “T” on both legs of the outbound, and 9 seats from Maui to Salt Lake City on the return, but only 3 seats from Salt Lake City to Newark on the return.
In other words, Delta is willing to sell 3 seats for those dates at the $340 price.
Once you find dates that you want with “T” availability that go through Salt Lake City, go to the booking linky at the beginning of this post and book your flight!

AAdvantage Special: Cancun For Just 20,000 Miles!

4

Took AAdvantage of that 25,000 mile free credit card deal during AA’s 25th anniversary promo on May 18th?
Then you’ll have plenty of miles for the new AA promo to Cancun from 08/21 through 12/13 for just 20,000 miles!
Cancun Promo Linky
Didn’t take advantage of that credit card offer?
Keep checking back here because a little birdy told me it might just reappear over here sometime soon…
