Update, 12/14/24: Once again, United leads the pack in extending status for Israel-based passengers as well as passengers who earned status primarily from flying to Israel.
We reached out to United last week about a status extension, but they had nothing to share at the time.
But dozens of DansDeals readers and DDF members have shared that they received Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K status extension emails today. 1Ks and Platinums will also get their PlusPoints allotment for 2025:
Last year, United extended members in November, Delta in January, and American in March. We may see a similar pattern play out this year.
Delta and United last flew to Israel on 7/30/24. American last flew to Israel on 10/6/23.
Hopefully, all 3 airlines will return to Israel in 2025!

Update, 3/19/24:DDF member bendor reports that his Israel based Platinum account received a status extension notification email, with status now through 3/31/25. Then again, with AA not returning to Israel until 10/26 at the earliest, I’d have to imagine that another status extension will be needed next year?

Update, 1/11/24: I reached out to American and Delta when United extended status, but neither had news to share.
Several DDF members now post that they received emails confirming their Delta status has been extended for another year, so I reached out to the airline to ask for more details.
The airlines confirmed to DansDeals that this year they included “frequent TLV fliers and those based in the area” in their annual member review for deciding which elites received a status extension despite failing to qualify for one. Delta says that the end of year review is a long-standing practice.

Many readers, both US and Israel based who frequently fly United between the US and Israel, have commented and shared the email that United sent them, extending their elite status through 1/31/25.
I had previously reached out to all of the US carriers about a status extension, but none of them had any comment. US airlines haven’t flown to Israel since 10/7 and foreign airlines are generally unable to resume flights due to their lack of insurance coverage for flying into designated war zones.
Below are the emails that United is now sending out to existing elite members who normally frequent the Tel Aviv route. For Platinum, 1K, and Global Services members, the extension will also include a new set of 2024 PlusPoints.
If you frequent the Tel Aviv route and didn’t get a status extension email, you can try contacting the United MileagePlus service center at 800-421-4655. You may need to wait until January to do that if they won’t extend it now.
Kudos to United for being the first to officially extend status, here’s hoping that all airlines will quickly announce their own status extensions.
JetBlue acknowledged this week that starting in 2026, they will add domestic style first class 2-2 recliner seats on all planes that don’t have MINT business class.
It’s not all good news though, as they said they will not be reducing the number of seats on their planes. It’s yet another cut for JetBlue economy class, which used to be positioned as more premium than on other carriers.
A220s should see 8 first class seats and A320s and A321s should get 12 first class seats with a 36-37″ seat pitch. Even more space seating legroom should stay the same at around a 35″ pitch, but economy seating will drop from about a 32″ pitch to a 30″ pitch.
AA, Delta, and United typically have a 30-31″ pitch in the back of the plane, so JetBlue won’t be much worse off than them, but it will feel much more crowded than it does today.
Frontier and Spirit have a typically punishing 28″ pitch.
Southwest currently has a 32″-33″ pitch, but will soon be reducing that to 31″ to make room for extra legroom seats, without removing any seats from the plane.
I’ve often said that one reason JetBlue’s Mosaic status isn’t particularly compelling is due to JetBlue’s lack of first class seating on most planes. Expect announcements about Mosaic benefits for JetBlue’s new first class seats closer to when the product is installed. I’d assume it will be able to be booked in advance with MINT upgrade certificates, but will also be eligible for complimentary upgrades close to the date of travel.
This is definitely the right financial move for JetBlue, as more and more passengers are paying for first-class seats, though those are pretty low first-class seat counts. At the same time, it’s sad news for JetBlue fans who enjoy the extra legroom they had in the back of the plane compared to most other carriers.

And of course the pizza, made in a custom Marra Forni brick pizza oven that pumps out the heat:

Exciting times for Cleveland’s kosher scene indeed!
Cleveland’s Jewish community has been growing exponentially over the past several years. That’s thanks to its low cost of living, warm and friendly community, safe suburban neighborhoods, excellent schools, short commute times with low traffic and plenty of parking, a revitalized core on the water with several sports teams and world class museums, and private school tuition vouchers.
One sore subject has been Kosher restaurants. DDF admin Chaikel Kaufman, Josh Bennett, and myself brainstormed for several years how to correct that, working to bring a proven concept and operator to town.
That search culminated with Mendel Segal opening Mendel’s KC BBQ last January, which has been a game-changer, serving up excellent food in an upscale environment. And it’s done phenomenally well, bringing in some $2 million in sales in its first year. That proved the naysayers, who said Cleveland couldn’t support a higher end kosher restaurant, wrong. It’s the best kosher food that you’ll find anywhere in flyover country.
I’ve been enjoying Mendel’s food since he worked at Kansas City’s Hen House grocery store kosher counter. He was cranking out the best pulled beef and fried chicken that I’ve ever had there, from when I got married to a KC girl back in 2008 until 2011, long before opening any restaurant. He followed that up with working at the KC Kosher Vaad from 2011 to 2017, while operating awesome kosher BBQ competitions in Kansas City, before opening Mendel’s Backyard BBQ, his first restaurant, located in Surfside, FL. He is no longer associated with that restaurant.

Mendel’s KC BBQ is managed by Shua Lurie, who catered the 2018 DansDeals kosher cruise to Antarctica.
And then after a multi-year hunt, I was able to connect Mendel and Shua with the Cleveland Guardians to open a kosher stand, which was last there in 2018. Mendel’s Dogs and Deli (It can’t be called KC due to the division rivalry and it can’t be called BBQ due to another BBQ joint with ballpark exclusivity) opened last July and has blossomed into the best kosher stand in sports!
No other park offers up specialities like the pastrami dog loaded with house smoked deli and caramalized onions, the Po Girl sausage, loaded with cole slaw, pulled beef, potato sticks, and Mendel’s award winning BBQ sauce, the c-town dog (who still remembers the ctownbochur days here?), a dog topped with delicious chili, or delicious knishes.
And now Mendel is doing it again!
Late this summer, Fiamma by Mendel will open at Woodmere’s Eton Collection, at 28699 Chagrin Blvd, 3 miles down the road from Mendel’s BBQ. The 2,800 square foot Italian Fusion dairy restaurant near Trader Joe’s will boast a clean, rustic, and trendy ambiance perfect for any occasion.
Fiamma (flame in Italian) will feature Wood-Fire pizza, handmade pasta, fresh seafood, and delectable salads, all meticulously crafted with an emphasis on quality and freshness. Mendel promises a top quality food and drinks and a cultural journey with the new restaurant.
The restaurant will be certified kosher/cholov yisroel/pas yisroel under Cleveland Kosher.
Every time I dine at Mendel’s, I bump into people visiting from near and far who stop to chat with us. It’s great to see Mendel putting Cleveland on the culinary map!

After major blowback last year, Delta didn’t raise their elite status requirements as much as they wanted to, though they said they would still do so over time. Delta led the pack in announcing changes in September last year, but they have been sitting back for other airlines to make their move and have not yet announced their requirements to earn status in 2025.
American will finally add lifetime million miler levels starting 3/1/25. Currently, you can earn lifetime Gold at 1 million miles and lifetime Platinum at 2 million miles. The airline will add lifetime Platinum Pro at 4 million miles and lifetime Executive Platinum at 5 million miles. If you already have that many lifetime million miler miles, you will get that status around 3/1/25.
Notably, those lifetime tiers are not competitive with Delta or United. Delta and United offer mid-tier status at 1 million miles, they offer Diamond or 1K status at 3 million miles, United offers Global Services at 4 million miles and Delta offers 360 at 5 million miles. United even allows you to nominate a household member to share your lifetime status.
However, American offered the ability to earn lifetime miles from all sources from 1981-2011 and in 2020, rather than just from flying, so it’s no surprise that their tiers are still not as rewarding. Currently, only miles earned from flying add to your million miler balance.
It’s nice to see AA finally add higher tiers, though it’s disappointing that there is still no path to lifetime Concierge Key, which is American’s secret top tier status that competes with United Global Services and Delta 360.
Systemwide Upgrade Improvements
Systemwide upgrades previously expired a year from issuance, which meant that it made sense to hold off on selecting them as a loyalty point reward until the last possible date.
Going forward, they will be valid until the end of the status membership year. That means if you select a systemwide upgrade loyalty point reward from the 2025 program, it will be valid through 3/31/27.
Best of all, if you already selected or will select a systemwide upgrade for the 2024 program, in early 2025 the expiration date will be extended to 3/31/26.
Early this year, American also finally added the ability to apply systemwide upgrades online.
Status requirements and benefits
Earning status is unchanged from last year.
You need to earn 40K loyalty points for Gold status, 75K for Platinum status, 125K for Platinum Pro status, or 200K for Executive Platinum status.
You’ll have to earn status between 3/1/25-2/28/26 and status will last through 3/31/27.
As you can select 1K loyalty points as a reward for earning 15K loyalty points, you effectively need to earn 39K loyalty points for Gold status, 74K for Platinum status, 124K for Platinum Pro status, or 199K for Executive Platinum status.
You can earn loyalty points from flights, base credit card spending, and other programs like SimplyMiles, AA dining, and AA vacation packages in equal proportion to miles earned.
American awards 5 miles per dollar spent on flights. Gold members earn 7 miles per dollar, Platinum members earn 8, Platinum Pro members earn 9, and Executive Platinum earn 11 miles per dollar, so elites have a big leg up in requalifying for status.
Gold status benefits include OneWorld Ruby status, Alaska benefits, 40% bonus loyalty points on flights, a free checked bag, group 4 boarding, upgrades for you and a companion when available starting 24 hours before flights, upgrades on award tickets for you and a companion, preferred seats at booking, and main cabin extra seating at check-in. Gold members can also redeem 5K miles to receive or gift Gold status for a day, up to twice per year and can redeem 25K miles for a Hyatt category 1-4 free night certificate.
Platinum status benefits include OneWorld Sapphire status, Alaska benefits, 60% bonus loyalty points on flights, 2 free checked bags, priority baggage handling, group 3 boarding, OneWorld business class lounge access when flying internationally, upgrades for you and a companion when available starting 48 hours before flights, and main cabin extra seating at booking. Platinum members can also redeem 8K miles to receive or gift Platinum status for a day, up to twice per year and can redeem 60K miles for a Hyatt category 1-7 free night certificate.
Platinum Pro status benefits include OneWorld Emerald status, Alaska benefits, 80% bonus loyalty points on flights, 3 free 70 pound checked bags, priority baggage handling, group 2 boarding, free same day flight changes, OneWorld first class lounge access when flying internationally, upgrades for you and a companion when available starting 72 hours before flights, upgrades on award tickets for you and a companion, upgrades for you and a companion on Alaska, and main cabin extra seating at booking. Platinum Pro members can also redeem 12K miles to receive or gift Platinum Pro status for a day, up to twice per year.
