Virgin Atlantic has moved from award chart based redemptions to dynamically priced redemptions.
But thankfully, they are not fully copying Delta, which owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic. Delta has no award chart at all and charges obscene rates for premium cabin redemptions both on Delta and partner airlines. They fully deserve the Skypesos moniker.
Virgin will maintain the saver award concept, and published a range of saver award minimum and maximum rates, though who knows how long that will last.
In more surprising news, Virgin has lowered the fuel surcharges on saver award rates. Those surcharges vary based on the mileage rate, with lower mileage rates having lower surcharges, and peak dates with higher mileage rates having higher surcharges.
If you want to access the old search engine and calendar, try using the Virgin Israeli site.
For JFK to London and back, the new saver rates are fantastic. Combined with frequent transfer bonuses, there are some lucrative redemption options.
A coach saver seat from JFK to London is 6,000 points+$73, that’s just 4,285 points with the current 40% bonus from Chase or 4,615 points with the current 30% bonus from Citi.
A premium economy saver seat from JFK to London is 10,500 points+$105, that’s just 7,500 points with the current 40% bonus from Chase or 8,076 points with the current 30% bonus from Citi.
A business saver seat from JFK to London is 29,000 points+$255, that’s just 20,714 points with the current 40% bonus from Chase or 22,307 points with the current 30% bonus from Citi.
Fees will be higher for the return flight, largely due to the UK APD fee.
Here is a chart comparing some of the old and new lowest saver award rates and fees that I was able to locate:
Route | Economy | Premium | Business |
---|---|---|---|
JFK to London one-way | Was 10K + $152 Now 6K + $73 | Was 17.5K + $457 Now 10.5K + $105 | Was 47.5K + $1,027 Now 29K + $255 |
London to JFK one-way | Was 10K + $279 Now 6K + $270 | Was 17.5K + $517 Now 10.5K + $444 | Was 47.5K + $819 Now 29K + $608 |
JFK to London round-trip | Was 20K + $496 Now 12K + $346 | Was 35K + $1,245 Now 21K + $553 | Was 95K + $2,385 Now 58K + $867 |
London to JFK round-trip | Was 20K + $366 Now 12K + $344 | Was 35K + $702 Now 21K + $550 | Was 95K + $1,307 Now 58K + $862 |
London to Tel Aviv one-way | Was 9K + $232 Now 5.5K + $220 | Was 17.5K + $378 Now 9.5K + $391 | Was 37.5K + $378 Now 28K + $410 |
Tel Aviv to London one-way | Was 9K + $69 Now 5.5K + $66 | Was 17.5K + $87 Now 9.5K + $73 | Was 37.5K + $87 Now 28K + $86 |
JFK to Tel Aviv one-way | Was 19K + $241 Now 11.5K + $155 | Was 35K + $531 Now 20K + $195 | Was 85K + $531 Now 68K + $364 |
Tel Aviv to JFK one-way | Was 19K + $221 Now 11.5K + $201 | Was 35K + $243 Now 20K + $244 | Was 85K + $390 Now 57K + $422 |
But the chart is not totally fair. Virgin previously guaranteed a minimum number of saver award seats in every cabin on every flight, but that guarantee is now gone. It is harder to find the lowest saver award rates compared to how it was previously, though this varies by route.
Additionally, peak rates are now pricing at breathtaking levels, though these dates typically would not have been bookable with miles previously. Then again, who is redeeming this many miles for a one-way flight?
And it does seem that connecting flights have less saver award space than previously.
The good news is that partner award rates remain unchanged:
Change fees have also gone up. Previously it was the lower of taxes paid or $50, now it’s the lower of taxes paid or $100.
The biggest problem with removing award charts is that airlines can devalue awards without warning. And that’s why despite a 40% transfer bonus from Chase to Virgin Atlantic, you should not speculatively transfer points there. But if you’re ready to book something, you can get quite a good deal with it.

Just booked a 1 way from TLV to JFK with Virgin with a stop for 33k on premium economy after transferring from Chase.
Great deal.
What dates did you book for. It won’t show me any option from tel aviv to jfk, only tlv to london
Just booked Virgin a ElAl ticket was charged $49.66 shouldn’t I be charged only $9.60?
You booked Virgin or El Al ? Whats a Virgin a El al?
On Virgin Atlantic website a ElAl flight
Does it pay to transfer for there travel partners?
It can be, just calculate the value of your redemption by dividing the cost by the points.
3 days ago I booked 2 awards round trips from JFK to Tel Aviv in upper class on the Delta website. (The Virgin Atlantic website wasn’t showing flights) The cost was 350,000 points pp rt plus $212.
Now, it looks like according to this article, I could book them for way less on Virgin’s website. Would it be worth whatever change fees they charge me to cancel and rebook?
Check the rates for your dates?
Delta doesn’t charge cancel fees on non-basic awards.
or on basic awards…..
Haven’t tested that, is that still the case?
I had a similar question. I just booked on Amex ( delta operated by virgin)NYC-London. 266k for 2 round trips for economy.
Would it be worth it to cancel then transfer from chase with 40% bonus amd get business class
Also always worth checking partner awards (eg. flying blue) for against virgin own prices.
How much was the fees?
Read the post please. 🙂
for April, if booking now united miles, or virgin miles, if they wont fly on April (only ELAL will, ) – ticket will be a no go?
if may need to cancel, better to have x2 one way?
last year did rountrip with ELAL, chase miles, took only one way, now ELAl is complicated to get the otehr portion (one year from booking date, wont allow one year from return fligth date, which is what we need) – any advice on ELAL?
would be better off if had x2 one way, would get a refund for the UN used portion
If you book with virgin, they’ll protect you on elal on the LHR-TLV leg if there’s availability
Looks like Virgins amazing companion fare (50% off a 2nd award rocket on same reservation) is not gone, with the switch to dynamic pricing.
Only available if you have status or a credit card with Virgin.
@dan why am I seeing $49.66 taxes for booking VA a LY TLV>EWR, shouldn’t I be charged only $9.60?
No, departures from TLV always costs more.
Interesting. I see now the breakdown, they have airport security fees from both Israel and USA.
Thanks.
Does this impact upgrading with miles? I typically found good use of VA points by upgrading my flights to premium or upper class.
one VS FF Account for husband and wife, or better each one has own account? read about shut off when booking for a different name. (not gold or silver status)
+1
700k plus $6-700 for Upper Class TLV-JFK???
What a devaluation!!!!!
I flew this route 2-4 times a year last few years was even rebooked Elal [TLV-LHR portion] few times this year, never paid more than 75k and some times even as low as 45k on sales.
I”l have to find a new alternative…
I am getting an error message when I try to search on the virgin website for flights from JFK-TLV It says theyre not flying to Israel but Im looking to book el al through virgin- is this also not an option anymore?
Are you searching for award flights?
