SAS 737-800 in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, March 2016.

Last Monday I wrote about the SAS kids fly free promotion

An adult can bring up to 8 kids for free on a roundtrip ticket in SAS coach or SAS Plus class from the USA to Denmark, Finland, Norway, or Sweden. Kids must be under 12 years old for the promotion. Tickets must be booked by 10/5 and depart from the USA between 11/1/17-5/21/18.

But can you stack that with a cheap flight to Israel?

Ultra-low cost carrier Norwegian flies nonstop between Copenhagen and Tel Aviv on Sundays and Thursdays.

They also fly nonstop between Stockholm and Tel Aviv on Sundays and Tuesdays.

OneWorld airline Finnair flies nonstop from Helsinki to Tel Aviv on Mondays and Fridays and from Tel Aviv to Helsinki on Tuesdays and Saturdays. In late March they will add a 3rd weekly flight from Helsinki to Tel Aviv on Wednesdays and from Tel Aviv to Helsinki on Thursdays.

A round-trip Finnair flight would cost 25K BA Avios+$141 or 40K AA miles+$42.

Other airlines have cheap flights from Denmark, Finland, Norway, or Sweden to Tel Aviv, but make an additional connection.

The Norwegian flight from Tel Aviv to Copenhagen or Stockholm is in the evening, so you would have to overnight in those cities to pull this off.

So how much would such a trip cost a family of 2 adults and 6 kids? (Yes, I grew up with 5 younger brothers 🙂 )

A nonstop SAS flight from Newark to Stockholm from 1/15-1/24 would cost $1,474.16:

A nonstop Norwegian flight from Stockholm to Tel Aviv from 1/16-1/23 booked on Norwegian.no using Chrome Translate would cost 7,284 NOK or $915. Be sure to use a card without foreign transaction fees.

That’s a total of $2,389 for 8 passengers or $298.63 round-trip per passenger from Newark to Tel Aviv via Stockholm. Of course you’ll also be on the hook for a hotel room in Stockholm for the night.

Or you can always stay longer in Scandinavia. Last year I explored Svalbard, Bodo, and the Lofoten Islands. From the polar bears to the Northern lights, it was truly amazing!

You can also fly to Israel via the much less hectic Ovda airport on Finnair from Helsinki or on Scandinavian from Stockholm. Book it for late enough and maybe you’ll get lucky and use the new Ramon airport.
