Delta’s afternoon flight between JFK and Tel Aviv appears and disappears more often than a magician’s rabbit.
Here are the dates that Delta is now selling the afternoon flight from JFK to Tel Aviv (The daytime return flight from Tel Aviv will be a day later than these dates):
September 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28
October 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 25
December 19 through 31
January 1 through 6
May 21 through 31
June: Entire month
July: Entire month
August: 1 through end of schedule (currently 14)
Clearly Delta is trying to cherry pick the dates that they think will be profitable to operate 2 flights, but it’s going to hard to beat El Al and United with such erratic scheduling.
For those keeping score at home, this means there should be at least 101 weekly flights between North America and Tel Aviv at its peak, which will be a new record!
- Boston: 3 weekly flights on El Al (777-200)
- Chicago: 3 weekly flights on El Al (787-9) starting in March 2020.
- Dallas: 3 weekly flights on American (787-9) starting in September 2020 (not yet on sale).
- JFK: 14 weekly flights on Delta (A330-300), 17 weekly flights on El Al (787-9)
- Los Angeles: 5 weekly flights on El Al (787-9).
- Las Vegas: 1 weekly flight on El Al (787-9).
- Miami: 4 weekly flights on El Al (787-9).
- Montreal: 3 weekly flights on Air Canada (A330-300)
- Newark: 14 weekly flights on United (787-10, 777-300), 11 weekly flights on El Al (777-200, 787-9)
- Orlando: (Not yet scheduled, was 1 weekly seasonal flight on El Al in 2019 on 777-200 or 787-9).
- San Francisco: 7 weekly flights on United (777-300), 3 weekly flights on El Al (787-9).
- Toronto: 7 weekly flights on Air Canada (787-9), 3 weekly flights on El Al (787-8).
- Washington DC: 3 weekly flights on United (777-200)
What will the be the next North American destination to get nonstop service to Tel Aviv?

October 7th is also available
That isn’t flight 466 (afternoon departure), that is flight 468 (evening departure) that is moved earlier (but not as early as flight 466) due to Yom Kippur restrictions.
This is why Dan is the man
Any chance to you think American might add back the flight from PHL?
I think they will need to wait and see how Dallas performs before deciding what to do next.
I’d guess the next flight will be either UA or DL taking on AA’s play for connecting traffic.
Until the DFW flight, the majority of flights were geared towards the O&D crowd. Sure there’s connections at SFO, or IAD…. but the primary purpose of the flights was to connect tech hubs, defense hubs etc.
And I expect UA and DL to either start up either ORD/IAH or ATL service, as those are the hubs that can meaningfully compete with DFW on connecting traffic
dan when is philly next?
Kind of surprised they don’t have one from Atlanta (Delta).
Other cities I would assume they’re considering:
Houston, Minneapolis, Denver, Seattle/Vancouver, Detroit
Delta has tried Atlanta in the past a couple of times and failed.
Not a fair comparison – since the last time DL flew there from ATL, Israel’s tourism growth has been among the highest in the world, and planes have made huge gains in fuel efficiency. TLV-ATL might not have been profitable in 2010, but neither was ORD-KRK or SFO-PPT.
Last time DL flew there from ATL, 75% of the cities on your above list didn’t have service, and that’s not even counting all the upgauging of existing routes.
You answered your own question 🙂
ORD-KRK and SFO-PPT are 787 routes. And yes, the 787 opened up many “long and thin” routes that were previously not viable, such as ORD-TLV and many more.
Alas, Delta does not have any 787s!
The 787 isn’t the only fuel efficient player in the game – Delta is a heavy buyer of A350’s and A330 Neo’s off the top of my head.
I have little doubt that they can make ATL-TLV profitable. The only question is whether there are other routes out there that would be even more profitable.
I don’t know the answer, but judging by UA’s huge expansion of TLV service, and even competition-averse AA getting in the game, I’m guessing the list of more profitable routes would be rather small (same goes for UA in ORD)
Clearly Delta disagrees with you, based on them adding back a 2nd daily JFK-TLV for summer 2020 over restarting ATL-TLV.
I’m guessing their analytics are better than what you and I have access to…
I don’t recall saying that it makes more sense to fly from ATL over a 2nd JFK.
Just that it would be profitable, and that using performance metrics out of ATL from almost a decade ago as justification to not have the route is a stretch given the advancements since then of both Israeli tourism and fuel efficiency.
Nor does it need to be an either/or – DL upgauging JFK doesn’t mean starting service from elsewhere is off the table as they get tons of new energy efficient planes over the coming years.
Delta has smart people working there. I’m sure if they have spare fuel efficient planes they will put them onto routes that will make the most money.
It just doesn’t seem like ATL-TLV is a high priority, but it doesn’t mean it won’t make the top of the list in the future after higher priority needs are filled.
It’s noteworthy that they haven’t sent suites onto the TLV route, while United sends Polaris on the route. Clearly United is driving a revenue premium compared to Delta to TLV.
“It just doesn’t seem like ATL-TLV is a high priority”
Which routes that don’t yet exist are?
While you can assert that DL might not be getting a revenue premium compared to UA, I wouldn’t overthink the significance of DL not having suites on a route as an indication of how much they value the route – DL flies suites DTW-AMS but not JFK-LHR (or JFK-anywhere best I can tell)
There’s a reason for that. Delta is more profitable in DTW than JFK.
There are also more daily Delta DTW-AMS flights than daily JFK-LHR or JFK-AMS flights.
People have been asking me for years about ATL-TLV. Delta has launched hundreds of other routes over that time period. If ATL-TLV would be the gold mine you think it is, then it would have already been restored.
Also, they were flying a crappy plane with old poor biz class seats.
I thought AA wouldn’t fly there bc of that residual dispute with US Air?
Resolved, apparently.
Weird that elal is still flying the 777 from EWR. Feel like it would make people hesitant to book J knowing they could end up in a 2-3-2 angle seat.
do whizz air and norwegian offer 24 hour cancellation policy on basic basic econ fare booked without baggage ?I read your posts on the 24 hours rule but could not find out if it applies to european low cost carriers. I am asking this because the price dropped on my separate booked leg tickets.
you know dan it would be nice if you can answer once in a while
NO
Are these flights just added meaning increased available options for sukkos opened up?
Very high prices for TISHREI. about 1500$
Why does an airline sometimes wait over a year before starting the flights they announce? (eg from DFW and fell ORD)
To give time to sell seats. Though over a year is unusual.
Do they think it’s gonna take them a year to fill up a bunch of flights to one of the hottest markets?
DFW-TLV is a hot market?
TLV is a hot market and a large chunk of this is for one stop connections anyways. And what about Chicago?
Is there an article of the best way to fly from NYC to TLV with points?
I’m assuming this is for 2020?
What’s the ElAl 747 doing at JFK if it doesn’t fly any of these routes?
beware delta has secondary security screening and closes the gate an houR-45 minutes before the flight. we once booked the 3:35 flight to arrive fri morning at 9:30 we hit traffic from lkwd to jfk TOOK US OVER 3 HRS. WE CHECKED UR LUGGAGE AT curb (ie got there hr before flight) arrived at gate 25 minutes before flight they would not let us board. we arrived tlv at 2 luggage delayed delta had no idea where it was did not leave airport until 4 …..delta was not cooperative
in answer to Norwegian you can cancel flights with 4 hours flights to nd from us 24 hours per their website,
