Rio is one of my favorite cities in the world, with lush mountains overlooking beautiful beaches. Best of all, you no longer need a visa to visit Brazil!
You can read my Rio trip report, including running off a mountain, here.
See the Brazil Master Thread on DDF for more information. While you’re down there you may want to take a side trip to view the bustling Jewish community of Sao Paulo, the remote city of Manaus in the Amazon rainforest (with a Chabad House of course :D), or the absolutely stunning Iguaçu Falls. When we went to Iguaçu we needed to pay for Argentine and Brazilian Visas, but now both countries have no visas required for Americans!
The islands of Fernando de Noronha and Florianopolis are also spectacular.
You can fly intra-Brazil using Delta miles on GOL, American miles on LATAM, or United miles on Azul.
A coach ticket during the January-February summer season in the Southern Hemisphere usually costs over $1,100 and a business class ticket usually cost over $5,000, making this an amazing bargain!
I found $1,393 tickets on most booking sites, but AMEX Travel has $1,193 tickets on select dates for AMEX Platinum cardholders.
American’s 777-200 business class is superior to Delta’s aging 767-300 business class and American’s return flight time is better than Delta’s.

I got tickets!! Excited about my Brazilian adventure! TY Dan
Boa viagem! Crazy deal!
Bom viagem… viagem is masculine
^incorrect^
Obrigado Chris 🙂
I stand corrected. Hey, you can even improve foreign language skills on DDF…
How many miles are earned on this trip?
Booked for late January thanks
AA has some matching fares. Different dates
Can we get a comparison of the different offerings? Delta One Business vs the American business here? Mostly wondering about the seats.
WOuld be amazingly helpful!
Thanks
American’s 777 seat is better than Delta’s 767 seat and the return flight timing is better.
Rio is amazing, enjoy! Try to fit in Iguazu as well!
Thanks!!! Looking forward!
If I may, why is it better? Bigger seats? They’re both lie flat. Anything to recommend Delta over AA?
Dan, went with AA. Thanks for the advice. Yes, Iguazu is on my itinerary as is Argentina so may hit it from both sides. Only thing I’m uncertain of is the rainforest/jungle visits.
Shalom & Todah.
Aa flight attendants are horrible i would take delta even with their aging aircraft
It would be very helpful if we can tell what version of 777 AA is flying on this route.
Do you need yellow fever vaccine if just visiting rio de janeiro for 4 days.. I am also visiting Bogota, and Cartagena Columbia on the same trip.. and these 3 places I can’t seem to find a clear answer
No need for any vaccines for Rio, Sao Paulo, or Iguazu.
You do need vaccines for the Amazon Rainforest/Manaus.
CDC is actually now recommending yellow fever vaccine in Rio since 2017 when they had an outbreak.
Is 8 days enough to go to iguazo?
Plenty.
Too much
Can add a 3rd city 🙂
I was THIS close to booking Feb 18-Mar 3. Thankfully, I checked the Rio Carnival dates. I do not like crowds. AA Availability was shrinking as I searched for new dates and had to settle on only 10 days. Thank you, Dan and JJ!
@Dan tx got tix .
Just hope that i wont have a minyan in J, lol
Interesting on Amex its pricing out at 2808$ but priced correctly on Chase.
Unfortunately looks like my flights are not on a newly retrofitted bussines class (its not herringbone)
Booked Sunday to Sunday for less than $1400 on AA
pricing out now at over $6000 a ticket.
We are excited!!
THX DAN
I got tickets as well. We’re is the best place to spend shabbos in rio? Are there any kosher hotels or walking distance to Chavbad.
Plenty of hotels within walking distance of Chabad Houses in Copacabana or Leblon.
But you can also consider going to Sao Paulo or Manaus for Shabbos.
Anything from Los Angeles?
Nope. Buy a ticket to NYC?
Is it safe to travel there with a family?
As you can see from my TR, I brought mine.
I wouldn’t advise going into the favelas (slums) though.
Perhaps the situation changed from ’14-’19
Fair enough. I’m not aware of it being any different then it was then. Take standard precautions, but I’d go back.
I live in Rio, petty crimes are still a major issue, but just be cautious as in any other major city. Not the safest city in the world, but millions of people live here and love it 🙂
How long do you recommend that we spend in rio itself?
A few days.
flying from Sunday to Sunday. Would like to go to see the falls.
Do you recommend staying for night or 2 nights?
thx!
Just doing Rio and the falls? Or trying to stick something else in there?
don’t need to stick anything else in unless we will be bored.
a little relaxing is nice. we like to hike and bike.
It would be a pitty not to see the falls once we are there.
is there anythingg else highly recommended?
thx!
What’s the best way to get from rio to sau Paulo?
Flying, plenty of commuter flights back and forth all day. Check Gol or Latam. The only other option would be driving which is not pleasant.
There are lots of cheap flights and mileage options.
The domestic airports, CGH in SP and SDU in Rio will be more convenient, unless you are connecting to an international flight, in which case you’ll need GRU in SP or GIG in Rio.
Hey Dan
Going to Brazil soon (not on business:( dates didn’t work out)
Any tips for (automatic) car rental? Any promocodes (for 2 weeks)?
Or just regular Priceline?
Obrigado
I wouldn’t rent a car personally. Taxis are cheap and driving and parking are a pain
Tnx.
Any suggestions to do with kids in Sao Paulo?
Read my TR?
Not much in SP besides food and a big Jewish community.
Anyone take a stab at what the kosher meal will be like on this AA business class?
Do you have a deal going to rio not on business class
