Want to read more about Hawaii? My love affair with Hawaii started 12 years ago when I posted and grabbed a deal paying just $87 for airfare and hotel. Since then I’ve been lucky enough to spend several months between the stunning islands, which each offer a unique and wonderful experience. You can’t go wrong with any of them, there are just 2 things is to be careful of.
1. Don’t get stuck in Honolulu. I’ve heard from too many people who spent an entire week and never left the city limits. That’s just a shame, they may as well have gone to Miami Beach. While I prefer The Big Island, Kauai, and Maui to Oahu, there is still plenty to see and experience on Oahu as long as you leave Honolulu behind.
2. Don’t try to “do” several islands in a week. If you just have 4-7 days of vacation then you should stick to one island. There will be plenty to do to keep you busy and it will allow for some time to relax. There’s no need to add the stress of interisland travel just for the sake of “doing” another island. With 9 days or more to play with, it does make sense to experience more than 1 island.
As for which island is best, read on and decide for yourself! If you ask 5 people you’ll probably get 6 different answers 😀

Using the calendar, all dates for the next 4 months from CLE-OGG or CLE-KOA show up as “Unavailable” 🙁
No valid connections that they’re willing to sell.
Try the app. I had the same from MSP on the web but the app displays routes
see my comment above about multi-city.
Finally!! Anyone know why they’re not flying out of LAX?
They’re going to add SoCal nonstop flights in the future.
When will they anounce dates of nonstop from lax?
Dan-do you think southwest will be brave enough to have direct flight from CLE to Hawaii?
0% chance of that happening.
Why ? There isn’t a single airline that currently has direct flights from CLE
CLE Rocks, Cleveland has a very friendly and warm Jewish community. With that said, the Cleveland regional market is too small to accommodate such a flight. If anything, because the overall population and economic growth is declining, you’d possibly see lower flight volume.
Toooo far.
As others have said, it’s out of range for the 737.
There 737max 8 can’t fly that far
Max 8 has a range of about 4100 and cle to hnl is 4500
I don’t see CLE happening, but dont say I didnt tell you so if Akron gets a direct flight to Kauai
Are they already selling from East Coast?
Search with the low fare calendar to find dates with valid connections.
wonder if they’ll have service from they’re hubs. PHX to Hawaii makes sense, but if they do BWI to Hawaii, that’ll be legendary. doubt that’ll happen though…planes aren’t big enough IINM
LAX, LAS, and PHX make sense.
MDW and BWI are way too far for a 737.
Maybe they’ll eventually buy a bigger plane to accommodate east coast travelers and have direct flights. though that’s not really their forte. ULCC’s tend to stick to smaller planes so they can have a faster turn around rate…
Nope. They are committed to 737s only.
Too late to signup for southwest card bonus?
There are links in this post. If you get 110K points in a year then you can a companion pass valid through the following year.
Are there any valid connections from the east coast? I think southwest has a nonstop to oak from EWR.
There are some for select dates. Use the low fare calendar link in this post to find valid dates.
Alternatively, just buy a separate ticket to San Jose or the Bay Area.
Weather wise, best time of the year Togo?
How would you piece together ewr to Kuhai?
Always good weather in HI.
Southwest is not yet selling tickets to Kauai.
@dan
Which airline do you think Southwest he is going to be stealing customers from mainly by starting this routes
just purchased 6 one ways tickets for 5845 points each in August, Oakland to/from Maui.
good times!
Hey is it better to use points or pay for the ticket? First time point user and I currently have 70,000 chase sapphire preferred card. How do you do the calculation to see when it’s cheaper to buy or use points. Not in a rush to use my points just want to do what makes most sense. Thank you so much.
dan you have to find a new place to get warm weather in the winter now that all the jews are going to hawaii
Just booked OAK to HON for all 5 of us & got great deal during very popular Easter Break time! Now to figure out LAX to OAK r/t & hotel or Air B&B in/near Honolulu & rent-a-car. Thx Dan! Let’s go Magic Castle sometime!
last time i checked Hawaii is just a bit bigger than Lakewood
As a data point, i booked two multi-city reservations (one each way) from BNA – SJC – HNL for 37k points in late september.
If you’re having problems finding availability try looking for multi stop.
Sadly unless you live near these CA airports and/or able to book the super cheap tickets its no big deal.
I Tried a bunch of dates and RT tickets to HI are around $250 but then I need to add another $300 for a ticket to get to CA. For that money can fly nonstop on the big airlines.
Does anyone think there’ll be deals like this to LIH? I missed these — they went fast! LIH is where I really want to go, anyway…
Southwest isn’t flying to LIH yet.
Right but I was thinking about how to be ready when they open that up — isn’t it in the plan, but just not starting yet?
Yes.
Just hope everyone who visits, especially Hawaii newbies, take the time to learn about, respect and enjoy the fragileness and beauty of the Island’s.
can you fly inter island if you book a star alliance award or a one world award and get multiple long stopovers one one award ticket without having to book for 2 separate legs for ?
United allows for a free stopover.
I’m looking for the flights around Purim. U say above that Oakland-Maui is starting March 19th. Could not find that anywhere. I called southwest and they said they’re not starting that route until April. could u have made a mistake or if not let me know how of such a deal from anywhere to Maui before Purim?
Dan any chance Southwest will open routes to LIH in the next month or two?
Is HOU within range for eventual direct flights?
I just checked. It’s about 3800 so we should be good. That’s what I’m waiting for!
