Flights to Brazil are typically a good use of miles as they are always very expensive.Ā But after JetBlue founder David Neeleman was unceremoniously dumped he went to Brazil to launch another blue airline, Azul.
Now Azul is starting to shake up the market with their launch of flights to the US. They are making an introductory sale price for flights from Orlando or Fort Lauderdale to Sao Paulo for Rio de Janeiro for just 1,277 Reais in Business or 482 Reais in coach for the one-way flight to Brazil after taxes.Ā That comes out to $509 in lie-flat business class or $192 in coach.
Prices are valid in December only, summertime in Brazil.Ā Flights from Fort Lauderdale start 12/02 and flights from Orlando start 12/15.
Unfortunately the fares are only bookable on the Portuguese version of their website.Ā The English version of their site doesn’t give the option to search for flights from the US.
Luckily Google Chrome does a good job of translating the Portuguese site. Just open it up in Chrome, right click with your mouse and have Chrome translate the page into English.
Azul flies into Sao Paulo VCP.Ā VCP is about 90 minutes from the city of Sao Paulo and Azul provides a free lusury bus transfer into the city from the airport.
If you want to fly into stunning Rio you can get a domestic connection to SDU, Rio’s closest airport.
Note that Americans and Canadians must obtain a visa prior to travel to Brazil. For Americans that means paying the $160 reciprocity fee that we charge Brazilians to visit the US.
You can credit miles from your Azul flight to United MileagePlus.
You can use your miles to fly back from Brazil to the USA. Most programs charge 20K-30K miles for the one-way flight.

Return tickets seem a lot more š
Will partner miles (like Azul) count as full mileage on UA Mileage Plus? Once UA has changed their accrual format in March, can miles flown on United be credited as full-traveled miles on a partner airline?
@Aihl:
Use miles!
@joetraveler:
It seems like it should earn full mileage on United.
Yes, you can still credit United miles as flown miles to partners next year. And partners credit to United as flown miles as long as United doesn’t issue the ticket.
Is there any availability with this price for January or will this only work in December?
@mendy:
These prices are valid in December only.
Are there any good deals from ny to florida to catch the flight to brazil thatll be worth it and still b cheaper than a direct from ny? What’s the best way back if I don’t have miles?
How many miles do we get for booking one way to sao paolo from FLL?
I only have like 4,000 united miles right now.
@Ashley:
The trip from FLL to VCP, would earn just over 4,000 miles.
The return segment is definitely in the range of $2,100 -2,290 ONE WAY flying around 12/ 14 to 12/ 16. Even though I was able to find one way going to Rio for $162, but what good is it? My outgoing date was 12/3/14.
Am I missing something?
@Avi:
“You can use your miles to fly back from Brazil to the USA.”
