American and TAM have some great fares between JFK and Brazil. It wasn’t long ago that tickets between the US and Brazil were $1,000. In the interim Brazil’s economy came off the rails, the dollar soared against the real, and demand for travel has gone way down.

Normally Americans have to jump through several hoops and pay a $160 reciprocity fee for a Visa to visit Brazil.
However in an unprecedented move, Brazil is waiving Visa requirements for citizens holding passports from the USA, Canada, Australia, and Japan if they arrive in Brazil between June 1-September 18. You can stay up to 90 days without a Visa. It’s intended to drum up traffic for the olympics that will be held in Rio in August, but you do not need to actually go to the Olympics or be there during August when Rio will be a madhouse.
Brazil’s currency, the Real, is fantastically cheap right now. You’ll get a 3.6 Reais per dollar, up from just 1.5 per dollar not long ago.
Tucked into lush mountains, rivers, and the ocean, Rio is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It has some very good kosher restaurants as well.
But you don’t need to stop there:
-From Rio you can fly nonstop to Iguazu Falls for 7.5K BA Avios or 12.5K Delta miles to experience the most awe-inspiring waterfalls in the world. Note that to experience it properly though you will also need to go to the Argentine side as well.
-Enjoy excellent restaurants and experience the heart of Brazil’s Jewish community in Sao Paulo for just 4.5K BA Avios from Rio.
-4.5K Avios is enough for a nonstop flight from Rio to the beautiful island of Florianópolis.
-For 10K Avios you can fly from Rio nonstop to Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon. And yes even in the Amazon, there’s even a Chabad House there as well which is run by an old chavrusa of mine.
-For 12.5K Delta miles you can fly to the absolutely stunning Fernando de Noronha.

Can I book a flight from GIG-MAO directly on BritishAirways.com with avios? I will be in Brazil in September and the avios website is not letting me search for that route
@Eitan:
I don’t know the answer to your question but make sure you check airfare prices first. Flying domestically in Brazil is so incredibly cheap right now that its usually not worth using miles unless you have to. You can easily fly roundtrip GIG-MAO for under $200. RIO-SAO under $100. Not to mention Avianca & Azul credits to United, TAM & LAN credit to American
