-Flights are bookable on Airfare.com

I wrote about these crazy cheap Transaero fares 3 weeks ago back when they were still selling flights with short connections to Israel. Since then Russia has bailed out the airline to ensure they can keep flying.

Those flights sold out quickly, but there are still flights with long connection times if you’re a glutton for punishment.

Airfare.com only allows free cancellation until 11:59pm on the day of purchase.

Adults tickets are $350, kids tickets are $282. Be sure to buy your infant a seat, for $280 you’ll be able to bring a carseat and not have to hold them for the trip.

Paul B

Does anyone know if the Moscow airport is tourist friendly . Is Transaro part of any frequent flier club ?

shoshana

when you wrote about the deals 3 weeks ago I purchased tickets for $384 premium economy for sukkos with a short stopover both ways.
you can search dates for sukkos and might still be able to find something for that price

Taanis Esther

Is the 4th of March this year, that is gonna be one long return fast day for all of those cheap fares. Just a heads-up.

Ari

Anyone ever fly with this airline? If so please share your experience?

JimJam

@Ari, I’ve flown with them multiples times. Young fleet and had great, great, great kosher food on the flight, originating in Russia, under good russian hechsher, which had fresh salmon.

@Paul B yes, very tourist friendly. Theres lots of shopping to do in there, my guess is now, with the rouble so crappy, can probably get good deals.

There are many people on long layovers in the airport and there is a whole section with space for people to lay down to accommodate the large number of people who don’t have visas to leave the airport.

Zvi

Is it even cheaper to just go to Moscow? Perhaps that would make for a fun weekend getaway. I hear there are a lot of kosher restaurants there.

asher

@Ari:
used this airline, same as all other europe stopover flights.

Naftoli

Is there anyway to upgrade these tickets with points

Harry

Why can’t I find same deal for TLV-NY?

Username

When you search and book on KAYAK, it seems like you have a little more cancellation time, depending on the time of day you book.
Cancellation Policy

You can cancel your reservation up until 11:59 pm Eastern Time (North America) on the same day you booked without penalty.
As an aside, how do Kayak and Airfare.com get around the DoT rule of 24 hours?

Dan

@Username:
Kayak is booking via Airfare.com, that’s their exact policy.

Seems like the 24 hour rule doesn’t apply to these agencies.

@Paul B:
I flew with aeroflot and I guess it’s the same airport.
It was very friendly, had free wi-fi and lots of restaurants, nice duty free.
I had a 4 hour wait there and it was really ok.

paysach

04/15-04/22 doesn’t work that total is 668 need to go after paysach any one find date that works after paysach

sam

Are these only availble from nyc? Or can I get this from Los Angeles too?

nope

@anonymous different moscow airport and is smaller… nothing to do there no internet at all and no outlets!

Charlie

@Anonymous, Im 99% sure that Aeroflot does NOT stop at the same airport as Transaero.
Aeroflot stops at SVO and Transaero at VKO.

chuk

Just booked 2 tickets Feb 18 – Mar 4 with short layovers both ways.

Milly

@Chuk
How did you get shorter layover than 13 hours?

mayer

do you have it from tlv to jfk ?
thanks

Amay

anything from TLV to JFK?

Tried reversing the search but it says they have no flights for those dates.

Danthecan

If you book a ticket for an infant and then decide to leave the infant at home and fend for himself (just kidding, you leave the baby with the bubbe and zayda) can you just show up at the airport without the baby and they will let you on plane without any problems? Or are all the tickets on the same reservation all connected and everyone has to show up to the flight together and the only option is to cancel the ticket for the baby ahead of time and/or pay a cancellation fee to do so? Thanks.

Dan

@Danthecan:
No need for everyone to show up.

Danthecan

Thanks, Dan.

Sunday, April 19 (16hr) – Tuesday, April 28 (28hr),
Sunday, April 19 (16hr) – Thursday, April 30 (28hr),
Monday, April 20 (26hr) – Thursday, April 30 (28hr), and
Monday, April 20 (26hr) – Tuesday, April 28 (28hr) are all $380.96.
Keep in mind that the flights that return on the 30th get in on Friday, May 1 at 12:15pm.

Sunday, April 26 (16hr) – Wednesday, May 6 (18hr) and other dates around this time are $570.96. The more manageable stopovers both ways may make the extra 200 bucks worth it.

Huvie

I am currently the VKO Airport on my 13 hour stopover.

To answer some of the above questions,

1)Transaero flight was pleasant and uneventful
2) I had kosher food (You have to call before hand to order)
3) VKO Airport is clean – there IS FREE WIFI but you have to look for it!
For free wifi – walk to the “MY.MY” eatery. It is at the very end of the airport on the right side near the marble waterfalls. great spacious place with wifi, comfortable sofa and armchairs. (I am here right now!)

4) regarding purchases – The exchange rate is 61 rubles for the dollar, but at the airport most of the stores are using the Euro, prices are INSANELY expensive! (27 dollars for a small silly putty..88 dollars for a mini wooden toy..its LAUGHABLE how crazy overpriced things are!)
5) Note that Drinks are cheap at 70-80 ruble – about 1.25

I definitely recommend grabbing this opportunity!!!!

Hope this helped !!!!!

Huvie

Regarding Luggage, you can bring two 55 pound suitcases, and a carry on

YO

If you have an Israeli passport you do not need to get a tourist visa in advance. I have went into Moscow with it and didnt show my American passport and I was ok. Almost everything outside the airport is just in Russian. So prepare beforehand. Use google maps, print out directions for the metro there. And I would recommend getting a tmobile Sim Card from a friend or family member who has the service since you get international data and texting for free. A real life saver.

@Huvie:
thank you huvie

Lili

Anything at August or July????

aaron

@huvie, were you there overnight? was the airport deserted overnight or were there other people there as well?

Huvi

I arrived 6:45 AM and left at 8:45 PM.
The airport was incredibly empty the entire time so I can’t imagine that overnight would make much of a difference.
There were a lot of Jewish people on my flight, over 30 frum Yidden.
I would be okay with doing an all-nighter. It is definitely boring but the airport is a comfortable place. I know other people who are doing the full night stopover. It is doable, just bring something to entertain yourself..

Sara

Don’t know if anyone sees this… But Dan I need your help in guiding me to buying insurance bec I want to change the dates of my flight and airfare.com wants me to pay $350 a person PLUS difference in the cost (that’s for 4 people). Can you recommended a insurance that’ll not give me a hard time when I try to get them to pay?
Anyone with advice please let me know !!
Thanks
