As always you get 2 free checked bags if booked on Southwest.com.  Plus you can cancel revenue tickets with no charge and use the funds for a future flight.  Point reservations can be cancelled for free with the points redeposited.

When Southwest has a sale the points needed for a free flight also go on sale as Rapid Rewards is a revenue based program.  A one-way short-haul flight can be had for just 2,214 points-a value of 1.91 cents per point

You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points instantly to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio.

If you have an Ink Plus or Ink Cash card you can earn 5 Ultimate Rewards points (transferable to several airlines and hotels) per dollar spent plus 1% cash back by buying Southwest gift cards at Staples and being registered for Visa Savings Edge.

If you travel Southwest a lot, open a new Ink Plus card, and buy $5,000 in Southwest gift cards from Staples you would get a total of 95,000 points and $50 cash back.  If you use those 95K points for Southwest flights worth 1.91 cents each you would have $1,815 worth of free flights.

If you have a Southwest companion pass your paid and free travel would be effectively doubled, so you would have $10,000 worth of paid flights plus $3,630 of free flights from points…but that would take a whole lot of Southwest travel!  You can get a companion pass from earning 110,000 points from sources like the Southwest credit card or transfers from hotels programs like Hyatt (50K Chase=50K Hyatt=30K Southwest)

The network carriers will also likely be matching these fares throughout the day in case you care more about earning traditional airline miles than the free bags and cancellation policy.
